Sometime in the past few weeks the way Google Maps handles zooming in Car Play has changed. Previously the user could select a zoom and the zoom would persist until the user changed it or the car was stopped.

Now Google Maps seems to select arbitrary zoom settings which may or may not be related to the road and/or population density in your current location. For example, in a location with many streets and roads, Google now zooms way in to, presumably, better show the detail of nearby streets. On the other hand, in a sparsely populated rural location Google now zooms way out. In fact, so far out that you can no longer see the colored traffic indications.

For me, this is a very inconvenient change. When I'm on the road I prefer to zoom out as far as possible while still being able to see the traffic indicators. I do this so I can observe traffic conditions on my planned route and make changes to the route if the traffic changes. This used to be easy. Now it is not.

It seems that Google ought to make this new zoom protocol optional rather than mandatory.

Or, did I miss some setting somewhere? (<- Very likely)

Ive noticed this change for some time now (at least 2-3 months) I agree not a fan of it and zooming out seems to still bring it back in too close.

Interesting. I had no idea it had been around that long. I'm glad I'm not alone.

Yeah I kept thinking at first I know I didn't set the map that close to zoom in (I like to see upcoming road changes) and it's just too close for me with whatever this autozoom thing is.
