Apple needs to allow third party maps apps to be able to use the lock screen. Also, we need a user default setting for maps applications as I hate tapping an address and having Apple Maps open.

Why would you voluntarily buy the inferior native navigation almost every car comes with?

One is it is included at higher trim levels but I would not pay extra for it if it was not coming with other things I like.

Now why I use the cars built in nav vs Apple/ Google maps?

Biggest one is the GPS is more accurate and is less likely to freeze or hang up in tighter areas. It the GPS signal gets weak the car can and will suplment it's location with car speed and direction. Apple and Google maps will sometimes freeze or not update fast enough even on 14 pro. Basically the in car navigation just works better.

On mach e I use the in car nav more often than car play because it works better, still has traffic data and ties into the car state of charge better. Plus it displays distanced to next turn better.

Never experienced lag with Apple Maps voice prompts, but did notice some lag a few years ago with Google Maps.

Are you sure your impression is based on current reality, or some brief testing years ago?

The laggy part is why I don't use it over the cars built in. It has happened on 2 different phones and 2 different manufacturers using very different base OS.

On one car the built in system works better so I use it over Apple/Google maps. The other cad apple maps were better but still would hang up at times.

Spoken as a true non-user of Apple Maps. 🤣

When's the last time you did a side-by-side comparison against CarPlay?
I have owned Apple stock since Jobs returned. I worked for Apple as aggregator in the SMB section for 11 years. My wife and I together own at least two of everything Apple makes, with the exception of the iMac and Mac Pro. Our home is automated with HomeKit. We use Apple Maps all the time. Just not in the car. The NAV system in our 2023 Volvo XC40 works with the the touch of a steering wheel button and a vocal command. Instantly. The same action with Siri works sometimes, sometimes not. In addition, Siri only responds dependably to one voice: the one on the attached phone. We found ourselves yelling like idiots trying to get it to respond at times. This NEVER happens with the car's NAV system.

Google is taking a long time. Should have been available from the time 14 Pro models launched.

Apple and Google maps are pretty much useless compared to the built-in NAV systems on any decent car made in the last 5 years. And should you really be looking at your phone's map while you're driving???
I guess you have never heard of CarPlay.

It's always included in the higher trim levels, and who wants a base model, even if you could find one? Also, because it works. And there's no lag. Maps are perfect and have pictorial representations of points of interest (You should see the picture of the Kansas City Keeper of the Plains statue and the river on my NAV!). Updates available at no charge online. Turn by turn voice instructions come quicker than Apple or Android maps. Tighter integration with the car's voice controls and dash screen. Not having to say "Hey Siri." Other than that, can't think of a thing.

I have the highest trim package on my VW and they weren't included. I don't have to say "hey siri" or any other phrase; there is a button on the steering wheel. Additionally, included Nav updates often aren't free. With our previous vehicle, a Mazda, you had to pay a yearly fee for map updates. There is zero lag with CarPlay.

VW is all-in on CarPlay and Android Auto. They have given up on doing their own nav.

Nope. Never use CarPlay for Maps. The NAV in our 2023 is just plain better.

Mine has data last updated in 2021 (I ain`t paying for maps data!) and in general I find the UI of cars SO ugly

2021 Ford:

Reminds me of Symbian on Nokia in the late 00s

Your ford one is running on what Sync 3?

Sync 4 which the Mach E got on launch and I know the F150 Lighting got are a different beast completely and the maps are by far better along with the entire system.

In 2025 ford is moving to Android Automotive which moves the nav maps to Google maps. At that point it is going tk just be better than carplay Apple maps and Android Auto Google maps as it removes a layer of things that can glitch up and uses the far superior gar GPS antenna vs the one in the phone.

Apple Maps is as good or better now. Google needs to realize slow rolling iOS development doesn’t work anymore. They need to dedicate more effort toward the product.
Indeed. Things changed in the last years, so today I’m using Google only for bike… I’m really glad to get rid of everything offered by Google
