Google Maps is set to get a new Immersive view for cities that uses artificial intelligence and high-quality 3D rendering to simulate real-time data, Google has announced.

Thanks to advances in computer vision and AI that allow us to fuse together billions of Street View and aerial images to create a rich, digital model of the world — we're introducing a whole new way to explore with Maps. With our new immersive view, you'll be able to experience what a neighborhood, landmark, restaurant or popular venue is like — and even feel like you're right there before you ever set foot inside. So whether you're traveling somewhere new or scoping out hidden local gems, immersive view will help you make the most informed decisions before you go.
As the video demonstrates, the new Immersive view deftly blends live traffic, weather, and astronomical data from Google Maps, Google Earth, and Street View with animated digital models that even include neat touches like birds flying over buildings, animated landmarks, and reflective bodies of water.

Users will also be able to explore inside and around businesses rendered in detailed 3D representations where data sets are available.

Google says Immersive view will work on "just about any phone and device" and will start rolling out in Los Angeles, London, New York, San Francisco and Tokyo later this year, with more cities coming soon.

Deleted Google Maps from my iPhone 3 years ago. Has it gotten better?
Better? Our neighborhood doesn’t even exist on Apple Maps yet and it’s also awful at getting construction site updates (at least for Berlin)

Also no offline Downloads for Maps and cycling routes unless you live in one of those „Silicon Valley“ capitals

The main reason for the deletion because it could not do turn by turn for apple watch and I hear the new Google Maps Apple Watch app is not very good compared to apple maps on the watch.

How will businesses be able to share the 3D view of their location? I can't see any mention of software/requisites to scan/upload.

I mean, you could yourself, just re-download Google Maps and see the differences to formulate your own opinion John. In over three years, I’d say you’re going to observe some stark changes with far more finite detail, live traffic updates and points of interest.

I live in a city of 640,000 population and although I use Apple Maps frequently, Google maps is also just as clutch.

Well, I am in the US and my neighborhood is still also not on Apple Maps. ?

Edit: Attached a screenshot, the house was built in 2019, the neighborhood probably since 2017-2018… still not on Apple Maps, at least you can see the street grid.

That’s really impressive! But it has Google in the name, so everything you do with it will be tracked unfortunately. I hope Apple Maps gains something like this in the future.
That old trope. I bet you don't even know exactly what data they collect and what they do with it, other than saying something very generic like;
They track you.
They sell your data.

Apple Maps will never catch up with Google maps. In Germany Apple Maps is way behind Google. It took Apple 4 years to correct the name of my street.

I am stunned why Apple services are such a hit or miss. Some like iCloud, Home, Apple TV+, Siri or Apple Maps are trash outside of the US and seem to be run by a handful of people working in part time from home and wo never used those things by themselves. Some service on the other hand like Apple Music, Fitness + or Apple Pay are great and way above the competition.

Really impressive. Depends a lot on the data they have of course, so this feature will be only for a couple of the largest cities.

Apple Maps will add this feature too but will give you an immersive view of the wrong route ?

In 2035, then Apple will make it work and call it “Magic Zoom” or something cheesy. Isn’t that revolutionary?

By the way, I travel abroad frequently, Apple Maps is simply useless outside of the US, no directions, no up to date information… Google Maps is my only option in that case.

That very much depends on the area you're in and when the map data has been updated last.

I have been to a city district last weekend where Google maps didn't have any of the new houses yet, but Apple maps had at least about half of the new houses. The street names and overlays were correct in both.

So it really depends where you are, and when satellite imagery is updated.

I’m going to ask it. What do we need all this for? Sure it’s amazing, but what purpose does it serve?

How many people you and I know would use this feature?

Do people really use this Google Maps feature to have an immersive experience or find a local hidden gem?

Maybe I am not asking for a lot. All I care is detail routes and traffic. All the others are just ….

Hi there, for what it's worth Apple Maps works ok in my experience in the UK. I've used it in England, London extensively, in Wales both in Cardiff and in the rural areas of Powys and Ceredigion & in Scotland in the Borders & into Fife. For general UK car use I can use Google, Apple & Waze ok, for London train / Tube / bus use Google & Apple are only ok but Citymapper is much, much better in London. For walking Apple or Google is ok in London particularly, but again Citymapper is better. Thats my two pennyworth.

It hasn’t been useless to me in Portugal, Spain, France, Italy, UK, Belgium, Austria, Greece, Switzerland, Gibraltar, Poland and Germany.
