That old trope. I bet you don't even know exactly what data they collect and what they do with it, other than saying something very generic like;
They track you.
They sell your data.

This is absolutely correct. Google does track for targeted ad's but Google does not sell your data and never has. Now that Apple has Eddy Cue focusing on ad revenue I'll bet this is the same strategy Apple will use for themselves. I'm sure they'll put a great deal of effort into marketing it as 'private' for what it will be worth but it will be exactly how Google functions. If you use Facebook then know your data is being sold. Facebook and Google are not the same.

On the surface this seems “cool,” but not far beneath it evokes more visions of a panopticon dystopia metaverse future. Just deleted Google Maps from my phone following some similar anecdotes in this thread :)

I think Apple’s look around is way better than Google’s street view….BUT street view is available in so many more places. Look around only exists in larger cities.

It hasn’t been useless to me in Portugal, Spain, France, Italy, UK, Belgium, Austria, Greece, Switzerland, Gibraltar, Poland and Germany.

Apple Maps will never catch up with Google maps. In Germany Apple Maps is way behind Google. It took Apple 4 years to correct the name of my street.

I am stunned why Apple services are such a hit or miss. Some like iCloud, Home, Apple TV+, Siri or Apple Maps are trash outside of the US and seem to be run by a handful of people working in part time from home and wo never used those things by themselves. Some service on the other hand like Apple Music, Fitness + or Apple Pay are great and way above the competition.
Apple is a hardware company trying to be a services company. That’s the way I look at it.

As per Google:
Do people really use it that way, though? That’s what I wonder. How much is that feature really going to be used?

Google Maps is not where I would go to to look for hidden gems. It would either ask people who actually live there or read travelling blogs or websites. Wouldn’t that be the expected logic?

Betcha people said the same thing when Google came out with finger scrolling on maps. “Hey, I like my tile-by-tile Mapquest. What’s the big deal?”
I wonder in fact how many people that you and I know that would use that feature.

I mean, it’s a cool feature, but let’s face it. Most people use Google Maps for directions, not for an immersive experience or looking for hidden gems.

Lol, I was saying it looks exactly like Apple Maps flyover mode.

The argument always goes, "it doesn't matter if Apple wasn't first since Apple's option is better." What Google has done here involves significantly more data rendered in a far more complete manner, and now the narrative switches back to, "well, Apple was first."

We have an opportunity to learn about fantastical technologies offering more complete, more immersive mapping experiences. Or, we can simply cheerlead to fulfill some personal need for our favorite company to always come out on top. It's all sportsball all the time, right?

I assume you'll be deleting Apple Maps as well due to Flyover? Apparently it's exactly the same.

I don’t entirely disagree with you as I’m in the Czech Republic and am constantly frustrated with what we don’t have here vs the US and some other countries, but how is Apple TV+ “trash outside of the US”? It’s the same experience across the board and subtitles are available in a huge number of languages.

I’d also argue that Apple Music is missing the incredibly basic function of being able to sort songs within a playlist automatically (by date added for example) … so definitely not way above the competition (for me).

iCloud works very well for me, here in Germany. Same for Apple Maps. So you might want to reassess your general evaluation as just based on one person’s experience. Nicht mehr, nicht weniger.
iCloud works wonderfully for me, too. Of course, I wish it were available on other platforms, but well … Apple.

In 2035, then Apple will make it work and call it “Magic Zoom” or something cheesy. Isn’t that revolutionary?

By the way, I travel abroad frequently, Apple Maps is simply useless outside of the US, no directions, no up to date information… Google Maps is my only option in that case.
Outside of a few selected urban areas, Apple Maps are just as useless in the US compared to Google maps and Waze.

Well for starters they probably track your location within the boundaries you gave the app.
Then they probably track your searches
your taps on the map
POI you check
directions

I just don’t want Google to know where I live, where I want to go, what businesses I’m possibly interested in, etc
Just because it’s old trope doesn’t make it invalid :) I’m going to great lengths to prevent them from tracking me across the web (I have all Google URLs/IPs blocked except ReCaptcha) so I don’t want to give them free data.
Are you on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram etc? And people worry about Google...

Regarding Maps, Google literally owns a “former” spy satellite company. So they are a primary source for data. Apple has to buy data sets or rent time on other companies satellites.

I have no idea. How much better has it gotten?
Are you some sort of Turing-positive bot? How can anyone answer that question? It will be entirely specific to your use-case. All software is under constant change. Depending who you ask and their priorities and/or axe to grind, that will result in regressions or improvements. So… yes? no? There’s your answer.
