Google Maps is set to get a new Immersive view for cities that uses artificial intelligence and high-quality 3D rendering to simulate real-time data, Google has announced.

As the video demonstrates, the new Immersive view deftly blends live traffic, weather, and astronomical data from Google Maps, Google Earth, and Street View with animated digital models that even include neat touches like birds flying over buildings, animated landmarks, and reflective bodies of water.

Users will also be able to explore inside and around businesses rendered in detailed 3D representations where data sets are available.

Google says Immersive view will work on "just about any phone and device" and will start rolling out in Los Angeles, London, New York, San Francisco and Tokyo later this year, with more cities coming soon.

Holy cow that's cool!

Deleted Google Maps from my iPhone 3 years ago. How much better has it gotten? I deleted because it would not do turn by turn from Applewatch. Has that changed?

Why is this relevant?

Apple is so way behind Google it's really pathetic. While we're being allowed to change our default browser and email they're doing this, oh and a 200 mpx cameras with 100x zoom....

Better? Our neighborhood doesn’t even exist on Apple Maps yet and it’s also awful at getting construction site updates (at least for Berlin)

Also no offline Downloads for Maps and cycling routes unless you live in one of those „Silicon Valley“ capitals
Well no one cares about Berlin, besides Berliner :)

On another note, the last update improved the German maps very much. Strange that Berlin got worse maps data.

How else should Apple route you with closed roads?

That's impressive mapping tech, it pays having military contracts and the ability to generate most of the data in-house. They're slowly merging Google Earth into this app.

It is "an old trope" indeed, but that doesn't mean it's wrong. Google's business model is to sell ads. It's better at selling ads when they're highly targeted towards you. This incentivizes collecting a lot of data about you (and using machine learning to extrapolate data that may not even be accurate). Apple's core business is completely different from that.
On iOS, both Apple and Google collect the exact same data and they both do not sell to third-parties.

It sounds as though you are underutilizing maps applications. They are excellent for planning, not just real-time route guidance. Having multiple maps apps is great, as they all have their strengths.

I used to also have Waze but deleted that one as well because I wanted 1 map app. If Google maps has improved allot I may redownload it. Has it?

Apple Maps will never catch up with Google maps. In Germany Apple Maps is way behind Google. It took Apple 4 years to correct the name of my street.

I am stunned why Apple services are such a hit or miss. Some like iCloud, Home, Apple TV+, Siri or Apple Maps are trash outside of the US and seem to be run by a handful of people working in part time from home and wo never used those things by themselves. Some service on the other hand like Apple Music, Fitness + or Apple Pay are great and way above the competition.
In all that time did you not realize that you can submit a change to apple maps yourself? It’s right in the app. You can add an item or report an issue. I reported a business changed and submitted the report with the new business and their hours of operation. It was updated in less than 2 weeks.

Yeah I send bugs and new entries, too. Without help from users it'S impossible to get better

Regarding Maps, Google literally owns a “former” spy satellite company. So they are a primary source for data. Apple has to buy data sets or rent time on other companies satellites.
This thread, as most about Google are so entertaining.

It’s too bad GM is like a Google spy on your phone. Otherwise I’d be using it over Apple Maps which still baffles me more often than I’d like.

Yesterday I wanted to visit a local coffee & tea place in a strip mall. It took me to the main supermarket on the other side of the mall.

10 years, Tim! 10 years to get it right and you’re still not close! Google and even Tesla are way ahead of you!!

In what sense? Google bought KeyHole in 2004. As far as I’m aware Apple doesn’t actually own any mapping satellites and therefore has to rent time on commercial ones or buy datasets from firms that offer the imaging.

Are you on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram etc? And people worry about Google...
Nope. Blocked at a DNS level on top of extension because they track with their embedded share buttons/transparent pixel. I know I’m quite the hermit.

I think people are right to worry about Google. Privacy isn’t binary. Yeah, having a Facebook account isn’t great for privacy, but some users might need it to contact acquaintances or family. Others might use Twitter for business. Doesn’t mean they should immediately sign up for data collections on every other services and shut up and be okay with it…
