Google today announced that its Maps app will support Live Activities in the coming months, providing iPhone users with access to turn-by-turn directions on the Lock Screen and in the Dynamic Island on the iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max.

Live Activities integration will allow users to receive real-time ETAs and directions for driving, biking, walking, public transit, and other forms of navigation via Google Maps, without having to unlock their iPhone and open the app.

Introduced with iOS 16, Live Activities are essentially live notifications on the Lock Screen that make it easier to stay on top of real-time events, such as a sports game or a food delivery order. Live Activities also integrate with the Dynamic Island on iPhone 14 Pro models, providing at-a-glance information at the top of the screen. Users can long press the Dynamic Island to open an expanded view with additional information.

Apple Maps has supported Live Activities since iOS 16 was released, while third-party apps have been able to support the feature since iOS 16.1.

Google has yet to share a screenshot showing what its Live Activity will look like.

Not good for drivers (too small to read while driving), but should be pretty convenient for pedestrians and passengers.

Live activities should really be on all iPhones, pill or not, or at least an option to turn it on (might be annoying for some people).

I don't really see this being for drivers, but rather passengers that are using the phone while navigation is active. This brings the instructions while someone else is using the phone for another purpose. The driver should not be touching the phone, so it just stays in the navigation app, full-screen. Is there something that I'm missing?

Other purposes could be when a call comes in or during non-driving navigation (walking, bus, etc.), allowing the navigation to co-exist with other apps that are being used.

Huh? Yeah that’s why I said it’s good for passengers and pedestrians. I think we said the same thing.

Will this be the first big app to finally implement live activities? It’s been sad to see it mostly get ignored outside of a few small devs who used it right away.
The (European?) food and grocery delivery app Wolt has used it for a while now.

I don't allow anything Google anywhere near the camera on my iPhone. So I'll be keeping them off Dynamic Island.
This better be a joke :). The two are only physically near.

Just wait until they implement the 15 minute city rule

I suppose they could have a VERY small map then

Turn Left , then left again , then another left...

I'd rather not have directions in the NOTCH, quite happy with my iPhone 13 Pro (almost) full screen.

The sooner Apple gets rid of their NOTCH,..the better!

It could easily be added to all phones (a bubble that pops up at the top of the screen under the notch), but Apple wants you to buy a new phone to access new features.
