It is a source of wonder to me that people still use Google anything.

It isn't just a matter of not caring about one's information being sold by Google, but of the aiding of the establishment of business models which predicate that functionality can only be had by relinquishing fundamental human rights, and, even more importantly, that one should not pay money for anything, no matter what the moral consequences are.

I want to pay for things because I don't want dodgy (shady, in US English) operators having to find morally dubious ways of generating profits, because those ways become the norm, and fund our workforce, and thus become the unholy glue which binds our increasingly selfish and unprincipled societies.

Increasing amounts of people worldwide depend for their livelihood on companies which operate under business models that rely on misinformation and obfuscation. The wealth of pension funds, financial markets and even whole countries, are incrementally connected to these companies, and regulators, investors, and citizens often can only watch as these companies make a mockery of their laws and social fabric.

I feel terrible because I yet lack the technical nous to completely erase Google’s presence in my life, mainly because other people's utter surrender to it make it difficult for me to interact liberally and seamlessly with other users, without jumping through a lot of hoops to avoid Google by proxy.

How anyone would actually allow any Google application to be directly installed on the devices they paid a fortune for, and which, although far from perfect, offer the highest protection available against the nefarious intents of companies like Google, Facebook, and of unscrupulous arrivistes, like Cambridge Analytica and others, is beyond my comprehension.

Apologies for the long comment. x

Don't apologize. Your comment is insightful, and (unfortunately) a very necessary one, given Google's history. They use and abuse the information they gather on you, and no signs that it will ever change. I'm right there with you.

Once I finally get my licence and buy myself a car that is compatiable with Apple Carplay and Android Auto, this is the one feature I will have in my car.

Aren't you supposed to be 16 to post in here? Just sayin.... ;)

I like the potentially more accurate maps, but the UI is very 2002 mapquest, if not worse.

Make it easier to tell what line is my road. I just see 6 parallel green and red lines with an arrow in between all of it.

Apple Maps is easy to see where I am in relation to the map.

I lived in NYC for a decade, tons of coworkers didn’t have a license until their 30’s. Just sayin. :)

I tried google maps today, and when I hit the microphone button it beeps like it should, I say where I want to go, then it just sits there and does nothing. I have tried everything to get it to recognize that I am finished talking. Not sure what to do. This is the only way to input anything while driving. Please help.

Google today updated its popular Google Maps navigation app, introducing support for CarPlay. With iOS 12, third-party mapping apps work with CarPlay for the first time, giving CarPlay users an alternative to the built-in Apple Maps app.

Prior to iOS 12, CarPlay users were forced to use the Apple Maps app as other mapping apps were not supported. Google's update release notes:For CarPlay to work with third-party apps, those apps need to introduce CarPlay support through an update. Google is the first mapping app to have done so, but other apps like Waze and TomTom are expected to debut support for CarPlay in the near future.

CarPlay is available in the Google 5.0 update that can be downloaded from the iOS App Store starting today. [Direct Link]

[doublepost=1537373080][/doublepost]Not very good in my opinion. The normal view looks a lot like Apple maps but it doesn't even have the 3D buildings. The satellite view is much better but the resolution is not high and the screen redraw makes it hard to read the street names. Also, I have an Audi without touch screen so zooming, moving and basically doing anything is slow and difficult. It takes too many clicks just to zoom or to find a destination.
Maybe I am biased because my car already has Google Maps navigation built-in, which looks much much better than the CarPlay version.

I was excited about third party navigation apps being allowed with iOS 12, but now I'm just hoping Waze doesn't screw it up like Google seems to have done, at least judging by comments in here. Never had a vehicle with CarPlay until getting my wife a new car a month ago. Been a Waze user for a while now, but due to the ease of use and CarPlay being new to us, we used Apple Maps via CarPlay for a several day long road trip to unfamiliar cities. The lane assistance in Apple Maps is so much better (and timely) than in Waze. If Apple Maps had the alerts for police, accidents, etc. ahead like Waze, I wouldn't even bother going back to Waze. Related...I wish that "Vehicle stopped on shoulder ahead" was an alert option you could turn off in Waze.

I've been waiting a while for Google Maps to be compatible with CarPlay now, mostly because you can use shared and stored locations tied to your Google account, and because I want to be able to dictate my location without having to say the address (In Apple Maps, 90% of the time if I say "<business name> near Manchester, Connecticut" or something along those lines, it isn't up to date with where that is actually located.) Google is much better at that.

I can say that Google Maps on CarPlay has mostly lived up to my expectations, except for one thing: no night mode. CarPlay displays are rather large conpared to mobile device displays. Imagine having a 6-inch display lit up mostly bright white while trying to drive at night. It's a problem.

Other than that, I have no complaints. It seems to be working well for me.

Funny, when testing yesterday I could have sworn it switched to night mode when I pulled into my garage and the headlights turned on.

Night mode works for me. It switched automatically as I drove home.

You can always dim the LCD screen in the car...;)

Has anyone tested the microphone function while driving?? I redownloaded google maps and still having issues. I’m in a 2018 Odyssey

In your settings on your iPhone go to general---carplay---delete google maps. That will remove google maps from CarPlay. That is the only real option. Either use it the way it is with maps on CarPlay and directions on your phone, or remove google maps from CarPlay.

This didn't work. It removed the icon from the home screen but google maps still launches in car play mode when opened.

Hehe, nah I finished school, I'm older than that. Where I live Public Transit does the job for me but my friends keep annoying me to start driving and where I work Public Transit is terrible so I am considering it.

A whole lot of overhype. Google Maps in car play gets a D.

The look of it is ok and I like that aerial maps are available. However in Apple Maps you see surround business like gas stations and restaurants. None so far in Google Maps.

In Apple Maps you can search, from Car Play, for gas or food but not in Google Maps.

The map function is similar to Apple Maps. I had an Apple Maps problem too. I maps not for directions but for problems and a rough estimated time. I knew I wasn't going to take the route that GM told me to take. Made a right turn and as far as 2 miles down the road GM still told me make a U turn and go back 2 miles. I got out of the car to put gas in and when I started the car back up, the route disappeared. That never has happened in Apple Maps.

Honestly, if Apple Maps didn't have that annoying bug that every time you start up Apple Maps it tells you where you want to go, I would stick with it.

I'm sure most of you are happy with GM but so far my experience is a #Fail

I'll see what Wazes has to offer when it gets released.

Hmm. Maybe the update didn't install properly. I've been hearing some issues about updating, and then reinstalls of the app resolving issues. I'll try re-installing the app. I already checked to make sure night mode is enabled in Google Maps settings, and it does switch when using it disconnected from CarPlay.

[doublepost=1537446398][/doublepost]Finally my CarPlay is working. Apple maps for some reason stayed in overview mode most of the time and I had manually zoom in. Very distracting. Google Maps is perfect on my car. Traffic info line assist. Thanks Apple and Google!!

My google maps with CarPlay shows the surrounding businesses. In fact, it shows more than Apple Maps does.

Search for destination stops working in my Audi A4 2016. The button becomes unresponsive after several destinations have been selected. Restart of iPhone fixes this issue but not for a long time.

Can't wait for TomTom support - we have had to wait so long. for off-line maps in Car Play. I travel around the UK and so often I start the trip where there is no internet, so Apple maps cant give me a route.

TomTom currently say early next year for support. Why weren't the ready for the launch of IOS 12

I have heard from multiple HONDA Odyssey owners that are having the microphone issue mentioned above. Can anyone confirm that this feature works for them? Is this an issue on Honda’s side?

I used mine last night. Google maps on CarPlay switched over to night mode automatically. This was on a Ford Sync 3 infotainment center, which may have to do with it.
