Yes you can, it seems you haven't used it ever, or for a very long time.
I tried using it before my post, pinch to zoom does nothing here. Double-tapping or hitting the + button worked to zoom though.

The drop-down menu on the right wasn’t doing anything either. (I assume it’s a drop-down menu)

If pinch-to-zoom should be working, well that’s indicative of the kind of experience the web app offers compared to the native app. (Safari in iOS 6, on an iPad 3)

I can't speak for an iPad, but pinch to zoom works very smooth on an iPhone via web app.

Weird, it looks like the JavaScript it needed wasn’t being loaded correctly the first time or something.

Revisiting the site, I was now prompted to save it as an “app” to the home screen and pinch-to-zoom and that drop-down menu works correctly.

The satellite images don’t appear to be Retina, but the rest is now.

It doesn’t pan around the map or load new tiles nearly as smoothly as the old iOS 5 app did.

While it may work it’s definitely a compromised experience compared to the old app, and not a good substitute for a native app.

I imagine they will make an app. Hopefully Apple approves it. Maybe within the year Apple (tomtom) maps will be as good.

It's obvious you don't understand...yes it's through safari, but it's not like opening up safari and typing in the address, and if you look at the link I provided you might understand.

Anyway I am done trying to explain something to someone who doesn't seem interested in actually understanding something and is only here to complain.
Safari still has to load. Hello?

Will Google Maps be available on iphone 5? I don't like Apple Maps and this is a deal breaker for me. I really want the iphone 5 but must have google maps. Does anyone know? Thanks.

We can guess all day, but you're best bet is to wait until Google releases a native app before purchasing an iPhone 5.

Google Maps also has to load. Just played with the web app, it's just as functional and easy to use as the native version.

You are correct.

Love it or hate it; go try it!

I just went to map.google.com. It took me to my current location while ASKING me if I want to "Add to Home Screen". I did.

The controls are a little different but it functions just a well as Apple's IOS 5 Google Maps. My only complaint is that you lose a little map real estate on the bottom to Safari app controls. However, I will gain that back when I get my iPhone 5 next week.

It just works fine and just as fast as before.

Try the Safari app, add it to you Home Screen. You might like it.

For my use, where I live, Apples map is actually better. Dunno what all the fuzz is about?!

If you're referring to Oslo, I seriously question the validity of your claims. Not only are googles offering more detailed and easier to read, Apple maps is so full of errors it's embarrassing. For instance, they have found room for oth a restaurant and a hair dresser in Slottsparken (uk reference, like finding businesses in the garden of Buckingham Palace). It's ****.

Because Google is about to lose its single largest source of revenue.

Google had something like 38Billion dollars of revenue last year and you are saying the single largest source of that revenue was the IOS maps application?

Yea, Im refering to Oslo. Granted I didnt use googles maps a whole lot, and I havent used Apples maps a whole lot either, I checked it out for navi purposes today, which it worked pretty good for. Not gonna replace navigon for me, but a lot better for directions than what Google offered.

Why would google pay its developers to make a free app for its rival?

Nothing Google does is free. It's paid for, but not by you, but by people who want to access your's and others' location and web-browsing information. Google will create a Google Map app so that it can collect information from you (and in some cases, about you) and sell it. This is why they created a YouTube app already.

Lots of other Google apps too (gmail, chrome, google earth, google drive, google+, google local, google shopper, latitude, currents...) almost every significant google product has an iOS app. Chances of not seeing a Maps app very soon is practically zero. Only thing stopping it would be Apple blocking it - which apple sometimes do if it clones core functionality, and right now it would do just that. It might be Google Maps will probably have to wait until iOS6 goes public.

I wouldn't be surprised if google delays releasing a maps app for iOS because there will be a lot of negativity when people upgrade to ios6/iPhone 5.

Delaying the app will give apple a lot of bad press . If the app comes out on Friday, people won't complain.

My bad. Google Maps revenue, not Google revenue overall, though recent reports put iOS as providing 40% of Google's total mobile revenue, eclipsing even Android.

It's not like Google Maps has a good reputation among developers as is. Many have dropped it because Google keeps upping the API fees. In all likelihood, Apple is positioning itself to take a big chunk of the maps pie beyond just the mobile space.
