All I know is, Apple maps are awful. Unintuitive. Missing features we've become used to for 5 years. Not as accurate as Google. Very sad to lose Google maps.

Why would anyone prefer a maps app that hasn't been updated in 5 years?

With the new Maps you get:
-vector based
-turn by turn
-real time traffic info
-3D maps
-flyover
-Siri

I doubt google will release maps on the iphone app store. While android is free, google maps is not free even on android handsets. All the OEMs pay for "google apps" and maps is part of that. Gmail, youtube, and chrome, however are free.

Okay. Here is my question to all of the people with love to the google maps app for navigation. Are you holding your phone while you drive? I gave up on the application along time ago because im not hitting next at every turn. No way if u are driving legally is the iOS 5 version of maps better than iOS 6 version period. I did say if you are driving. Now if you are walking, taking transit or maybe trying to figure out a neighborhood first fine. If you are driving no way. Maybe tomtom, garmin, etc are better while legally driving but not ios 5 maps. Next topic. By the way iOS 5 map users please don't kill me like the chick I saw navigating with the phone in her hand, product of ios 5 and prior.

How many people are suggesting they prefer the Google Maps app for navigation? Not many of them, from what I've seen. Most people are using it for locating things that are otherwise not locatable using Apple maps, or for things like transit directions. I don't see too many people saying they prefer the old Maps app to navigate while driving a vehicle.

I haven't tried Apple Maps yet. Does it not work for transit information like subway routes and the like?

I think Google already said they would release a maps app on the App Store, didn't they? Or am I thinking of the youtube app they just released?

Google Maps have been vector based for years now.

But none of those features, while nice, mater if the core feature of map quality is not as good. You can add all the fancy features you like, but what is most important is how good the map itself is. So far I personally prefer Google, but it seems to vary by region and I'm sure things will improve. I'm not particually bothered but i can understand why many people don't like them. When iOS 6 goes public I reckon there will be a lot of people complaining.

I don't own a car.

i dont use either one for driving, thats what navigon is for. google maps was nice to show me the nearest bank or whatever in a big city. with apple maps those services r all over the place at least in germany or how could a bank be on a lake in the middle of Düsseldorf ^^

I have used transit instructions in Cincinnati and although it worked I wouldnt rely on it by any means. I could get to my destination most times 30 minutes sooner by simple steps that google just didn't consider.

Apple maps have already failed in my mind. I was literally standing outside of a Half Price books, and according to Apple's maps, it doesn't exist. -_-

You're just embarrassing yourself at this point.
Thanks for pointing that out. I still believe that using safari to load google maps is a step backwards. I believe it so much that I've decided to delay an iphone5 purchase until I can verify that a google maps app will be available.

No they haven't...not on iOS for that matter. Do you even know what vector based means?

My bad, and kinda yours too (but more mine); they are vector based but not rendered on the device. So much of the benifit is lost. Apples solution is better there right now.

And yes I know what vector based means, I used to do CAD work. But no mater how they are rendered, a bad map is still a bad map.

I would expect a stand alone google maps to be vector based, as they are on Android.

Will Google Maps be available on iphone 5? I don't like Apple Maps and this is a deal breaker for me. I really want the iphone 5 but must have google maps. Does anyone know? Thanks.

Alas, I can't tell you any better than anyone else here.

I personally like the Apple map app. It's decent and I'm sure it'll be on par with Google's offering in a matter of months. It seems to have a much more robust cache than Google Maps iOS5 ever did (that's with my 20 minutes of playing around). Besides, the iOS 5 map app for Google Maps was pretty mediocre.

What is a deal breaker for me is that Apple uses a data format that my 3G provider (7/11 Speakout... unlimited "data" but only if it's mobile HTML) doesn't transmit and so I'm left without mobile maps. I can already see how iOS 6 is a major improvement over what preceded it but I can't live without mobile maps... time to downgrade :( :( :( (though, I really like the speed improvement in Safari and the Podcast app is nice... though, now I'm wondering if the Podcast app existed for iOS 5).

I am hopeful that Google will itself continue to use the same data stream as was used in the Google Maps app for iOS 5. There's a chance that'll happen since Google Earth still works quite nicely over my 3G network.

Apple Maps are pretty darn awful, especially in the UK where I live. Also, people please stop touting "Vector Based" as a feature, that's nonsense thrown around by Apple to impressive non technical people. Most don't even know what that means and Google Maps are also vector based anyway.

The main thing that I miss from Google Maps, is street view. To me, that is the best feature of any Maps app. Who cares about a gimmicky helicopter view render? It eats up processing power for no reason. Street View is FAR more superior. Even the 2D maps from Apple look like a cartoon designed on MS Paint. Truly embarrassing.

Hopefully Google release a new app pronto!

Yep, Street View. Street View is the killer.

Also Apples satellite images are vastly inferior to the Google ones. At least here in the UK, anyway. Looks like they use the same ones as Bing.

I must be odd, because I've rarely found Street View to be particularly useful. The few times I've used it have always been on a notebook or something with a larger screen.

This is what I miss the most being a public transport user ImageUploadedByTapatalk1348140372.767779.jpg
