If Google wasn’t such a data vacuum, I’d have switched to a Pixel Pro last upgrade cycle. But privacy, AirPods and AppleTV keep me in the Apple garden (for now).
I felt the same way, although i upgraded to an S25 Ultra it's been amazing, the display is gorgeous, UI is amazing, and the antiglare which Apple can't get right is 2nd to none.... the galaxy buds are comparable if not better then the AirPods I upgraded from, every TV is a smart tv now so no need for AppleTV because you can install the app anyways.

I’ve never used Android, but every time curiosity hits, it’s always the Pixel that catches my eye. I was a techie back in the early ‘80s before it was trendy—and I’d like to dip a toe into the Android pool without all the extra stuff like DeX, GoodNotes, UI7, and whatever else they’ve bolted on lately. At some point, I may end up giving her a try as a second phone just to learn. 👨‍🔬
I have tried a Pixel several times and always come back to my iPhone. It's nice and all but it's just not an iPhone. Plus the way Apple hardware works together is 2nd to none.

Pixels are great, I would get one but the biggest barrier to me is brand equity.

I bought a Pixel 3XL for £1000 or so, on launch, 2 years later, chose to upgrade. Went to the Google Store, they offered me £150. If I had an iPhone, they would've offered me at least double if not more.

Apple doesn't do that to its customers and that's the biggest reason I've remained a loyal Apple fan even through all of this.

Samsung is also great but I don't really want a bloated phone either.
Proof:

Will iPhone video camera FINALLY be fixed???. For years night videos from ANY iPhone have added horrible green dots in the video. Everybody is so used to iPhone mediocrity that we think is better that than NOT having those.
Are you talking about lens flare? Do you have an example of this? I've been doing videos in all sorts of lighting on my iPhones for years and don't remember seeing something like this. I'll occasionally get some lens flare during the day in bright sunlight, but that's not unique to iPhones.

And Android UI was fully redesigned after seeing the original iPhone announcement, to mimic the iPhone UI to each Pixel.
No it wasn't. the Android UI was fully redesigned to use on phones, because it was originally an OS for a digital camera.

That's also why permissions were wide open and multi-tasking was not implemented well - it was designed for a digital camera, not as a consumer OS with an app store.

While more creative than recent Apple ads, bashing competitor isn't the best sales tactic: no one cares about which phone you use. For me Android will never beat the convenience of iOS, but thats just me. Also over the last 15 years I had bought so many apps that I don't ever need to switch to another platform since these apps are non-transferrable, as well as there are simply no such apps on Android. There is no Pixelmator for example, no Halide, no ProCamera, nothing honestly.

Apple has many useless features, including Google's highly praised "widgets" which back in the days have slowed down every Android phone because those were constantly using RAM, but in general iOS still has more ease of use as Android. Also Google copied a lot from Apple, including ugliest thing possible - UI design. Minimalism will never outperform skeuomorphism, and Google was first to copy it from iOS 7. Their users seem to like it tho, I don't and dream skeuomorphic designs make a comeback some day in future

Aa a Pixel Fold Owner, and Apple Fan , this was Pretty Lame, BUT Apple has done the same thing in the past, so its a bit of a silly Ad. its not 2010 anymore. The whole android vs ios argument is just stupid.

And they quickly pivoted over to a phone operating system to compete with Windows Mobile and Symbian. When the iPhone was released it looked like a Windows Phone/Blackberry and they did in fact regroup and redesign Android to be used with touchscreens to compete with the iPhone, pretty sure that is the redesign they are referring to.

As the foldable gets thinner, I am more and more tempted to make the switch. Apple is taking to long with a foldable device and I am starting to see the appeal of having a device with a larger display built in. Rumor has it that the next Samsung foldable will be super thin in July

I like how they put the iPhone in a case just so it doesn't stand there looking more pretty than the Pixel.

Can you imagine if they had an iPhone in that ad with no case, with an Apple logo staring at the viewer? It would just remind people watching that the iPhone has the consumer lust factor that the Pixel will never have. Everyone would watch that ad and think "I don't care, I want the one on the left."

So they had to put a clunky case on it, to make it look anonymous.

If only google made good earphones and good tablets… and laptops with good OS…
Why? Do you have to buy all your tech from one company? Mix and match and you’ll get the best of everything. I have a Pixel phone, a Mac Mini and a MacBook Air. You don’t need to invest in just one ecosystem at all.

1.) AppleTV the box… not TV+ the service.
2.) Fast switching with AirPods Pro is peak convenience.
3.) I use DDG for search. No socials other than MR and similar forums.
4.) And Google collects EVERYTHING… no thanks to hardware that enables that behavior. I have a Firewalla to block any errant hoovering too.
I am just watching TV+ on my Android tablet with Galaxy Buds perfectly switching between my phone and a tablet. Maybe you should stop being so suspicious and start using Google to become more educated. :)

This is rich coming from Pixel, whose whole schtick is to be the most iPhone-esque android phone. Remember they also "copied" the notch and square camera from the iPhone? They removed their iconic two-tone approach to look like an iPhone. They moved to flat sides to mimic the iPhone. ARM chips like an iPhone. Their dual cameras used telephoto first when ultra wide was already mainstream because that's how iPhones started.

I think phones copying good things from each other is a good thing, mind you. So this whole criticism is dumb. If no one copied Apple's iPhone, all smartphones would be so much more primitive than they are today. Copying good stuff is good. Hell, iPhones had 4k60 recording since 2017. Pixel only added that like 2020 if I remember correctly. They were also super late to move to metal from their plastic phones and were easily crackable for years. These highlighted "design" catchups are pointless in comparison something like that.

Is that how bad it is your going back
about 18 years
To pick something that android copied

So dumb. Android OS in it's current form, Google PlayStore and even the hardware - ie. in-house CPU, multi touch and the inertial scrolling with rubber band effect are all thanks to Apple pioneering it and a Google copy shortly after. All of which, had much more impact on the industry vs the orientation of a camera bump. At this point, big ideas are few and far between on a slab design. And everyone is cornered in design choices from year to year so there is nothing left to do but borrow, steal and be influenced by the successful design choices of others in some cases. It happens both ways every year. If you cover the cameras on the Pixel 9, it sure looks like an iPhone more than ever.

It is frustrating for us consumers that neither platform nails everything. I guess it keeps things moving forward.

iPhone to me means better hardware (though the gap is shrinking), better video and less nagging from family (iMessage/Aidrop walled garden). For everything else, Pixel is the truly smart smartphone.

First Pixel was n iPhone 6 without the button. And the current pixel looks like an iPhone. So not sure what they are on about.

They seem to forget android etc was all a copy of the iPhone in the first place. Didn’t see them mention that fact.
