I really don't like either. I miss the old RSS feed that was in Safari.

Me too. I do use RSS feeds now, just not in safari. The problem is that that a lot of web sites are now abusing the RSS standard and marking their feed stories as new every few hours. The only thing I can think of is that the originating sites think everyone has Alzheimer's and that updating the feed timestamp will get them more clicks.

I found that the Google News app was draining my battery, it was the most used app that was using the battery since I installed the app. I have since deleted it.

You have to be a masochist to seek out news. To qualify as news, an event has to be tragic, scandalous, or forecast something apocalyptic. For balance, it is peppered with frivolous insights about celebrities and digital lifestyles.

The greater part of modern "journalism" is speculative. The only accurate accountings are retrospectives. Wait for the book or movie—after the dust has settled and the facts reveal themselves.

Ignorance is bliss. I can live without news when news is nothing but drama. I don't need unnecessary worries and stress.

I really like Apple News, especially on an iPad. I used to used Zite, which I loved. Flipboard never did it for me.

That is complete BS ? News is information. It doesn't have to be tragic, scandalous, or forecast something apocalyptic. With that said most of the news out there is worthless BS because real journalism is dead. Not to mention they all seem to have their personal agenda. It is all sensationalism and/or click bait crap.

I’m hearing this attitude more and more often, and it’s a bit troubling to be honest. Democracy requires an engaged and informed citizenry, and that’s what the fourth estate is supposed to provide. It’s not as if it’s impossible to seek out professional, reliable sources of information. You don’t have to get your news from Facebook.

real journalism is dead.
It really isn’t. There’s a lot of incredible investigative journalism going on right now, maybe more than at any other point in history. The trick is separating the good stuff from the clickbait crap. It’s all about your sources.

In Germany we only get 4 headlines and only as a widget. And if you uninstall the News-App from your iPhone you won't get it back until you restore. It's not available in the German AppStore. Sad.

Same here in the Netherlands......

Everyone has bias. Get off that high horse.

What high horse? Just look at the CNN versus Fox News joke in the US. News should be about facts, nowadays it is ether about feeding you adds (money) via screaming headers while zero content or to influence your opinion (power) by completely biased information. You just cannot trust any source anymore, just sad.

Just wish I could delete CNN----

Real journalism has moved to podcasts these days........

News is information.

Thanks to the Internet (and 24/7 television), it’s information overload. Originally, tv and newspapers had limited time and space. They were selective about what they reported. And local news was just that… local.

I don’t need to know about every child who falls down a well, every murder, or every corporate embezzler. We have plenty of those events in our own backyard. Or so I thought. Our local news stations feel a half hour is inadequate to inform us. Yet, more oft than not, they have to fill the time with isolated events that occurred several states away!

Lets see Google News is tracking and monitoring you to profile you for profit, Apple News not as much... Apple wins.

Apple may not live and die by data mining as a business model, but they do enough, especially via their apps like News, to qualify as full time, full on tracker and monitor.

I wish both supported:

- mark as read
- mark as read on scroll
- unread count
- show only unread items
- show all items from all sources, not just recommended ones

I would also add being able to categorize multiple sources, including ones I added like RSS feeds, into my own groups.

I use Flipboard also and it lacks this sort of feature. I mean there is/was the ability to add your own sources, but not in your own groups. Like if I wanted to have an Apple News/Rumors category with the Macrumors twitter, Apple’s twitters, the RSS from my google alerts etc all together I can’t.

I really don't like either. I miss the old RSS feed that was in Safari.

I’ve been waiting for one of these news apps to support RSS so I can put my google alerts in there. It would clean up a lot of my email. And yet I don’t see this as a feature in Google’s own News app

Dear MR, when you make such comparison articles, you ought to - at least - mention that Apple's application does not support all regions, meaning the app is not available to most parts of the world. Google's app is available to every single country and adjusts to show localized news from various local media.

How's that for a feature difference ?

Its an improvement, im on Android P now the whole UI is cleaner. I stll am trying to make it tidier. I get some news thart doesnt matter too me.

Grasp at straws much?

The article is about the two apps that deliver news, not about the content of said news.

I’m fairly certain you’re grasping at straws. The contents of an app is most definitely relevant when discussing the app itself. You should have put this in PRSI, and saved everyone, including yourselves, a nice fat headache. I don’t like having my posts deleted, and I expect more from this site. You should have known better.

Nope.

Not necessarily.

Why, or how, would I have put this in PRSI?

You should have known better.
How?

The only thing I think about this news apps is WTF this companies think they should decide what news I should trust... we always have in the past deciding which newspaper to buy, which television channel should watch, which blog to read and which youtube channel subscribe... and now a few company think they should decide for us...no

I don't use none of them and never will I decide what I wanna read...

The first is an all out framework with crazy naming traditions. Distributions and destinations are arranged into a position like framework. The reason regularly writes that break news aren't anyplace on Google News and NYT, Wa Po and so on get every one of the features.

If you don't read the news, you are uninformed. If you do read the news, you are misinformed.
