I'm not a fan of news in general since so much of it is biased fact-distorting nonsense, from almost any source. I suppose Google News isn't a bad way to indoctrinate oneself, though.
Wow, an Alex Jones acolyte right there.

Yes, Apple News has DETERIORATED to ****.
With Global Warming News POLLUTED by the NUT Site "Daily Caller", with literal horseshoe articles based on No Science at all.

Apple News is a great apps IMHO but the company just way too slow with geographical limit to certain countries. Googles saw opportunities and soon will topple Apple. All running their own state-of-art Ads algorithm. Both company generating incomes but user paid zero-dollar at all course. I'm stick with default News apps.

BTW, just change ur Country in Settings. Some videos might won't work until you turning VPN - ON.

Apple News. Is there any simple shortcut to get back to the opening News/Top Stories screen? I will get deep into several articles and want to go back. The only way I've figured without quitting the app and re-opening it, is to hit the top left "Back" chevron and go back through every article I've opened. Am I missing something obvious?

now everything is comparisons between apple iOS and Samsung android, for months the same useless comparisons, is getting old, but the Mac OS page is no longer in the front page, because Mac rumors has become Android rumors then iOS rumors and at the end of the list Mac Rumors that why the Mac section is no longer in the front page, it seems like they are working for Tim now, why don't we get comparisons between Mac and Windows and put that in the front page, the Mac section is being filled by useless tutorials that nobody cares about, speaking for myself I don't care about Samsung or Android, stop the useless comparisons, loyal apple costumers will not buy a Samsung phone even if is better than the iPhone, so if is better or not we, I mean I don't care, you can fill the page with Samsung vs Apple, Android vs IOS but put in another section like you did with the Mac section, why moved the Mac section out of the front page when this is Mac Hello Mac Rumors, put Mac section where it belongs, in the front page then move the useless Samsung Rumors section out of the front page. waiting for WWDC 2018, waiting for a new Mac Pro and for Mac OS 10.14 whatever the name will be.

Most likely because their idiot design team is in love with anything that's blinding white on off white. Heck look at the google news web site, it's difficult to find anything that is not blinding white. Apple having a dark mode definitely is a huge plus.

Can someone explain the logic of the Google News redesign, check out the old version (2 versions ago at this point)

https://theoldgnews.com/news/headlines?ned=us&hl=en

Compare that with the current https://news.google.com

By having a blue font headline and a snippet preview of the article, the readability is much higher on the old version, now it resembles some academic paper or trade catalogue, all of the articles seem to blend into one and it makes you not want to look at any of them.

The 1st new version was bad but this 2nd new version is even worse and for some reason the "Top Stories" which listed the top ten stories in each category is gone, does anyone know if I am missing a way to turn it on, that was one of the best features of Google News.

But again, Google is the billion dollar company, what am I missing, they want people to stay and click through articles, what is this new web fascination with making all of the text bleed into one giant trade catalogue.

Update: OK, I see they kept the list of the top ten topics, called "In The News", good but it still does not change the fact that after I check the top ten tech topics, I will not stick around because the font colors and lack of snippet previews makes searching for random articles no fun, I assume Apple News will provide a web app? Hopefully that is more readable.

Update II: But "In the News" is only for top general stories, if you click on the Tech category they no longer give you the top ten tech keyword stories, that's bad, goodbye Google News.

I prefer my news to be curated by an editor who I pay through an actual paid subscription. I strongly believe that in a market economy, if I am not the customer, then I may be the product.

I wish both supported:

- mark as read
- mark as read on scroll
- unread count
- show only unread items
- show all items from all sources, not just recommended ones

What you're looking for is a feed reader like Feedly. I don't expect Apple News or Google News to ever support those types of features.

In India, Google News is the only realistic choice. Outside Apple's home turf - Maps, Siri, News, Apple TV, no-questions-asked-speedy-service are all crippleware. In India we pay more (prices are usually 30-40% more) but get way less. Its time some kind of equivalence was stuff down Apple's throat - maybe by the Government.

Yet you're perfectly okay with posting on an Apple fan news site which by nature is going to be biased?
I never said it wasn’t biased. Why the heck is everyone trying to read stuff into this comment that isn’t there? Seriously, read a few more of my comments before jumping all over me. I have explained myself down the page a bit.

EDIT:

It would seem MacRumors deleted the comments which explained my intention, which further proves the bias here. Now, my comment stands on its own with no explanation. Good job MacRumors. I am sick of the knee-jerk comment deleting here. It really get bad sometimes.

In Germany we only get 4 headlines and only as a widget. And if you uninstall the News-App from your iPhone you won't get it back until you restore. It's not available in the German AppStore. Sad.

Yeah the problem with germane language is the super long words so there’s no space 4 more news maybe? Or maybe nothing important 2 say there, i mean all important things happens always in US - i don’t know if there’s a Twitter 4 germanians or something cause all these huge words u can’t say more than hello and u used yours 144 characters plz explain

Sure, we have so long words and nothing happens in germany or the european union. ;) I would rather say that publishers may have to pay for both sources (apple / google) to appear in their news apps? As far as i know a lot of newspapers in germany won't appear in both news apps either. Usually they are providing their news on mobile websites or in their very own app, also particulary you've to pay for articles as an reader.

I would love to use the news apps but as the amount of content is not so high, i use their websites.

SmartNews is a great aggregator app and I find it better than both mentioned in the article. Just tons and tons and tons of sources that you can add (they become their own individual tabs within the app). It’s really convenient, you can scan everything.

Moderator note:

A number of posts have been deleted as the thread had derailed into PRSI discussion.

Please start a thread in the Politics, Religion, Social Issues forum if you want to discuss political bias in the press.
LMAO @ "derailed".
You actually invited discussion of two sources of biased news, so that's far from unexpected.

They're both bad interfaces; what's the choice here? Default by merit of being pre-installed or default by merit of of availability/existing accounts?

Anyway; its appalling that modern Apple is so heavily biased/political/manipulative that you can't simply choose its hardware/software without risk of 'supporting' agendas totally unrelated to the actual product.

I use web based google news in safari, and now it became almost unusable on my iPad mini 4 due to extreme lag and stutter.
It works much better on my iPhone X though...

I doubt Apple News will provide a web app, though I don’t think they do snippets either anyway. I’d imagine that’s gone because I doubt news providers liked them much to begin with. I mean, you’re getting their content and they’re getting nada. I saw some of those snippets and saw just enough context to the headline to know what the article was going to be about.

All I want is a simple feed that tells me what happened today. I’m not one to “cherry pick” news channels. Just tell me what happened.
Not being snarky, but unless you want a massive feed due to too many sources, and possible real or perceived bias in those sources, you would still need to decide which sources contribute to your preferred feed.

To get news which is beneficial to you, you have to choose at least one source you trust.

Google recently introduced a new Google News app with an entirely updated interface and a range of new features that put it on par with Apple's own News app, including a "For You" recommendation section and "Full Coverage" headlines that present a story from multiple angles.

We went hands-on with Google News to check out the new features and to see how it compares to Apple News, the built-in news app that's available on the iPhone and the iPad.

The Google News app is a reimagining and revamp to the existing Google Newsstand Play app that was previously available via the iOS App Store. It's been entirely overhauled though, with a simple, clean interface that's fairly similar to the look of Apple News with a dedicated navigation bar at the bottom.

Google News does, however, have an additional section for quickly selecting news categories like U.S., World, Business, and Technology.

Both apps feature a "For You" section based on personalized recommendations. Apple's draws in information from the categories and news sites you choose to follow, while Google presents a selection of stories that become more tailored over time based on what you choose to read and what you favorite.

In each app, you can search for different news sites, blogs, and topics and add them to your coverage lists to impact "For You." Google's For You section highlights a list of five top stories and then provides supplemental stories at the bottom of the list, while Apple organizes For You into top stories, trending stories, top videos, and then recommendations based on channels and topics.

Apple News features a "Spotlight" section that features curated news selected by Apple News Editors, which highlights interesting news topics that you might not have otherwise seen.

Google News doesn't have a similar feature, but it has its own unique offering in the form of the "Headlines" section that aggregates the top news stories at the current time. In the headlines section, major stories have a "Full Coverage" option that lets you see the same story from multiple news sites so all of the angles are covered.

Google also has a dedicated "Newsstand" tab that lets you subscribe to paid and free news sources and a range of magazines using payment information stored in your Google Play account. Apple doesn't have a similar feature right now, but such an option is said to be in the works following its acquisition of magazine subscription service Texture.

Have you checked out Google News? Do you prefer it over Apple's own news app? Let us know in the comments.

What I hate the most about Google News or the google App, is the unacceptable and annoying amount of ads. Can't use the internet this way. Thats the main reason why iOS chrome and also android with chrome is not an option at all. I stick with safari with adblocker and have a superior web experience.
