Google Nexus One Software Updated to Offer 'Pinch-to-Zoom' Multi-Touch Capabilities

There's already a browser app on the android market that allows pinch to zoom functionality...but it would be great if it was on the stock browser. Nothing beats the stock browser.

Now I just have to wait until the droid gets a system update..

does this update allow multi-touch when using the virtual keyboard? i think before, it would only let you press on one "key" at a time...

Which was one of many reasons I recently dumped my Hero for a 3GS, for all the talk of Android being an amazing platform it still has many many drawbacks which are barely mentioned.

Why did they not have this to begin with?

This is a good development, but why not have the capability to begin with? I'll never understand why companies purposely withhold great capability from their devices. I know why though. Money. Apple does it all the time, and apparently Google does too. Unbelievable.

Funny, would you same the same thing about the iPhone adapting cut/paste after many other phones have had it for years?

Indeed. Don't get fooled neither by Google, nor by Apple.
Not having copy-paste was more than ridiculous, and not having pinch-zoom on a touch OS as well.

Notice that the web-surfing experience on the all new 1 Ghz Google Nexus from 2010 is worse than iPhone OS 1.0 from early 2007.

Are you sure about that? Screen size and resolution alone make a big difference (in favor of Droid and Nexus) even compared to iPhone 3GS

Yawn .........

This has been around on the iPhone since its launch.

Nobody cares about Googles old adaptation to "Pinch to Zoom" technology.... "OMGosh we can zoom now yay!! yippieeee"...NOT!!

didn't all you apple fanboy's get SOOOO excited when the iphone finally got MMS and copy/paste.....things that have been on other phones forEVER!!!

Sure, he did. But, this was more of an act of showmanship, rather than a legal document. It was a marketing tactic. Other phones (the Pre, for example) have implement pinch-zoom and nothing has happened to them. And, it's been about a year since Cooke vaguely threatened legal actions against Palm.

and IIRC, Jobs also said "and we'll defend them..." i guess whatever patents apple does have are vague enough to keep them from taking action.

We know their plans now, and they want to "Kill the iPhone" so besides search at the moment and maps (which I barely use), somebody tell me why I should care about google?? and their monopolistic community.

This should be Page 2 news.

Google is dead in my eyes now.

Actually I find this war to be a crazy opportunity for stocks. I bought same amount of stocks from apple and google. I'll wait a couple of years, and I'm pretty sure things will go pretty high if that's the start. Can't wait for the ipad launch, chromium launch, new iphone, google app store, new ipad apps developped.. wow, great things are waiting for us to be discovered :D

The faster CPU in the Nexus One looks like it finally improves on some of the responsiveness of Android. Am I the only one who's tried a Droid (for example) and it feels like the touch gestures are sort of "asking the OS to do something" while on the iPhone 3GS it feels more like i'm moving or resizing an actual object? In its defense the Droid has a lot more pixels to push around while doing it... So maybe the cpu in the Nexus One is enough to make it nearly "smooth."

Woooooooooooow. Welcome to 2007 Google.

.

again, what's with the fanboy comments? people making fun of google because they just now included something that came out in 2007.......yet, correct me if i'm wrong, but didn't the iphone just get MMS and copy/paste.....things that were around since 2001??

ya, way to stick it to google fanboy.

The Nexus One has had multitouch/pinch-zoom from the beginning. The only thing was the Google apps themselves didn't have it. There have been apps in the Android market like the Dolphin Browser which has had pinch-zoom/MT already.

Google Navigation says hi.

Take this from a guy who is posting from a droid right now - the browsing experience of the iphone has set a high standard for android. Neglecting speed factors, id say that apple has a very high advantage.
Like others have said, competition is good. Now that google is giving android phones multi touch I'm sure apple will come up with an even better idea.

Do I like my droid? Yes.
Do I like verizon? Yes.
Do I like the iphone? Yes.

Then why did I buy a droid?
Simple - multitasking and aps that have tha ability to access system tools.
Give that to the iphone and put it on verizon and id buy one in a heartbeat.

Again... totally different... Apple's way to push away MMS on the 1st iPhone failed (they were hoping users used emailed) but the customers apple were targeting weren't as open to that idea as I was and many others so Apple had to work on a messaging client.

Other flip qwerty keyboard phones did have MMS but terrible versions of MMS. The iPhone again was the 1st Full Touch device and thus apple had to work on a seamless way of making it all just work..... How many phones today can you edit video and audio clips with???? hmmmmm let me guess NONE!...... except for the iPhone.

Google Navigation says hi.

Apple did acquire a Maps company last year.... So soon I'll say "Google Navigation goodbye" :)

In 2007 Steve also said that anybody can do the Google UI in maps but it was the back-end that apple had difficulty with. They now don't have that difficulty anymore after their acquisition of Placebase :)

You can edit videos on Nokia N97.

Anyway, wouldn't it be far easier to edit videos on a PC rather than a phone? More practical.

I guess it's really on between Google & Apple now.

After having Mr. Google on Apple's board for a while, it's not surprising to see the new evil ones riding on the company's R&D...the Nexus is IRRELEVANT, of course, but anyway...bad, Schmidt, very bad.

SO where is this map app? Seem like the ipad still have google maps on it... WITHOUT navigation... but theres an app for that... starting at about 69.99 AFAIK lol

Phone editing is just a simple scrub and shuffle, nobody is trying to do FCP or FCE on a iPhone..... Apple has achieved the simplicity of what video editing is on a smartphone device....

Nokia N97??? was that their revenue this year??? $97 lol;)

ohhh yeah N stands for Neglected...Nokia Neglected their devices since 97

Apple just acquired them last year buddy, development on something you've never done before on the back end takes some time, not to mention adding useful features that will best the competition (so users will have a reason to really choose yours over others).... Apple acquired PA Semi and this year just rolled out their own chips. This stuff takes time. I never said any time frame, but If I had to guess, 2011.

Apple is still hiring for Map developers on their website.
