Watch out microsoft, here comes Google. Here's another report with a great title: Google declares war on Microsoft.

Can't compete with free.....

Looks like a good old fashioned cage fight coming up for the next dominant OS - tongue firmly in cheek. Unfortunately MS has a mighty hold on the market, but these may be seminal moves towards a new way of thinking about Operating Systems and technology. Once given choices for OS / Office Software etc. I'd hope to see consumers demand compatability - so I can open a Word file with Appleworks....etc.

I was just thinking today. Apple is essentially the biggest they've been since the mid-80s. Might history repeat itself? Might things go afoul at Apple if Steve starts getting bigheaded with this newfound success? Apple pioneered the downfall of IBM before getting internally rotten, and losing their self-created PC market to Microsoft. Again, Apple has pioneered the downfall of Microsoft with internet savvy and secure software. However, instead of Apple getting big, will they get mixed up in internal affairs, and wind up losing the internet/security market they've started to Google?

However, this is a gross oversimplification of the politics and markets involved, and probably contains many fallacies that make this less likely, but it's still fun to speculate.

Google and Apple should become partners and take on microsoft together :D

After they cover the world with free WiFi, release their OS, and make their web-based OS and Office Suite, I might be free from both MS and Apple. ;)

Wonder how our usage of the internet, and computers, will change when Google offers everything I want in web-based form?

1984...

I dont know who to be more afraid of, MS or Google!
Both hold/can hold a lot of power of information.

don't know if this has been posted yet, but Google's teaming up with NASA...

http://money.cnn.com/2005/09/29/technology/nasa_google.reut/

"Google and NASA share a common desire -- to bring a universe of information to people around the world," Schmidt said.

They could very well put a monopoly on computer technology. Much, much, bigger than Microsoft could ever *hope* to be. They've got all the makings of an OS system, they've got a monopoly on phone searches (Google SMS, anyone? and it's still FREE!!! except if you don't have a package text message plan), they're getting into video, they've got mapping...

I'd love myself if I was working there right about now.
