I would like to see Apple set their ego aside and use Google as the default search engine. Give us all Google Apps and services preloaded. That would save me from having to install all that each year when I get a new iPhone. I have enjoyed the enhanced performance and functionality of my iPhones and Android phones thanks to Google. They've done a lot for mobile computing and communications.
Ego has no place in business. It only serves to cloud one's judgement. If Apple ended the partnership with Google over ego, then Apple wasn't being very smart and I have confidence in Apple's ability to make smart business decisions.

Show me some evidence. that Apple ended any partnership with Google over ego.

Idiocy. Many of us have no interest in selling our internet souls to google.

I would prefer that Google (or any other 3rd party software) not be preloaded on my iPhone. It is pretty simple to upgrade phones and automatically install the apps I had on my old phone. Plus I always change my default search engine to DuckDuckGo - to each their own.

Even if it wasn't the default, many people would switch back to Google and set it as the default themselves.

Google is just the superior search engine. Not the most private, but the most reliable one.
[doublepost=1453434034][/doublepost]

How would it not be legal? It's a standard negotiation.

Agreed. I really don't care what they set as the default as long as I get to change it to match my preferences.

Yep, Apple has made billions over the years by sharing Google's ad revenue, made possible by Apple selling access to its iOS users.

Tim Cook and his hypocritical "you are not our product" line, reminds me of Captain Renault in the movie Casablanca, when he orders Rick's bar to be shut down:

Eh, this disclosure might be unseemly and a bit awkward for Apple, but it doesn't change anything. Google would be one of the search options regardless of whether they paid Apple or not; it just makes Google the default one. One could make the argument that making Google the default undermines Apple's commitment to privacy, but is duckduckgo really good enough yet to be the default anyway? In my experience it's okay for generic searches, but it often fails to present relevant results with more complex queries. So there would be a backlash if DDG was suddenly the default.

I dunno. Ever since I could jailbreak, I'd enable DuckDuckGo as my search, or use their app. Now you can do that without jailbreaking, so I wonder if Tim is as hypocritical now.

Weird thought - would Apple ever consider having their own search engine? I know that it's easy to use a well established company like Google for this task. But is it within reason for Apple to ever do something like this?

It's not that weird. They already have a search engine, just not in a traditional sense. Apple's spotlight and Siri are getting more powerful every year, and with in app searches, traditional search engines are becoming less relevant by the day.

Oh I know that yahoo and Bing can't compete with Google. I was just seeing if it was possible that Apple would try and jump in on it. Because I have no idea about that field.

DDG comes pretty close to google's performance. If I can't find it in DDG I run the same queries in google and get the same results. Really, search has pretty much stagnated over the last 10 years or so, ever since Google turned into an advertising company. It's actually against google's best interest to get you good matches now, since if they do you won't see their ads.

Apple's trying to bypass google with their universal search, and it's sort of working...but it needs to get smarter. As time goes on it'll get better and better until magically google will be gone.

Speak for yourself. I don't want to spend time every year taking them off.

PSA or maybe PGA.

I use my fair share of Google's services but not their apps directly, so I have no interest in having their apps preloaded on my phone. Not all their iOS apps are that fantastic. For instance, I use Protube over Youtube because it blocks ads and has a number of features Youtube hasn't implemented yet, such as PIP, split-screen multitasking and Background audio streaming.

And after seeing how Google screwed us iPhone users over with Maps for so long, I am using Maps over Google Maps for as long as Maps still meets my needs.

Considering that Apple gave up iAds recently, I doubt it. They lack the scale and the expertise and I don't see how Apple would monetise it. I could see Apple buying DuckDuckGo but I have used it a few time and the search results really suck.
I feel sorry for people that have to use Maps, it is almost always wrong and hate how it is the default app that brings up my addresses unless I am using Google Chrome.

Why? There's nothing special about Google. I switched to Bing recently and actually prefer it.

*throws up*

No thanks. Most people don't load all that crap on their iPhones anyways.

I didn't realize Bing was still around as a search engine.

Was it ever established that Google chose to restrict the maps app in the way it did? I always thought this limitation was based on how Apple pushed stock apps...

As far as blocking ads in youtube, I am certainly not here to preach, but ads are actually how the service is able to remain free. Obviously Google has no interest in adding an ad blocker and, if it becomes problematic enough, they could just cut traffic to apps that block ads (thought I am not sure it will ever get that far).

In Tim's wildest dreams, Applebook, Applegram, Applefy, Apploogle Search, etc. would all exist, dominating their categories. I think for now, it's better if Apple keeps up with what they seem to do best (hardware), maybe revamp iTunes and leaving the rest to other companies.

Thery could easily take a stance of no default and require the user to choose one on first load of safari. I think KDarling made a very valid point here.

It's getting close to the point when Apple needs Google more than Google needs Apple. I guarantee you that if Google locked down all their services from iOS, Apple's marketshare will dwindle. YouTube, Google Search, Google Maps, Gmail, and Google Photos are all too ubiquitous now. I can't see Apple competing. Moreover, Apple's stance on privacy is both a gift and a curse. Google has been mining our data for years and are sitting on a goldmine of consumer data, they know about everything. It allows them to have services that far outpace anything Apple has to offer.

Apple may have won the battle, but Google is winning the war. As long as advertising exists, Google will always be a billion dollar company, whereas Apple's standing in business is more fragile. That's why Apple has been desperate to enter the car industry.

Totally worth it. I know tons of less techy people would use some s*** like Bing if it were default.

Then I'd have to waste time removing everything except Google Maps, if they would even be removable.

Google knows where the money are. They probably earn more from Apple than from their own android ecosystem...

Thanks god that won't happen...
Do you want to give all your data to google? Buy an android phone.
Google search engine is enough on my iPhone....

I sincerely hope you are joking.
Nope. Just a Google lover...

With all due respect, that's totally bs....
iOS users are using Google search. It is their choice. They have the possibility to use another search engine if they wish, or don't use it at all (open Safari, open the search engine webpage you wish and use that).
Google search engine isn't integrated in iOS. It is just one choice.
