In all honestly, any Li-Ion battery can catch fire, randomly even.
It does not happen randomly. A battery can catch fire if it's abused mechanically, or if it has a manufacturing defect. It is quite obvious, that the former has happened here. In my opinion the frame of any gadget that contains a Li-Ion cell should be stable enough to withstand some force applied to it, which is not the case here.

"Nelson bent the smartphone backward in a way unlikely to occur in normal use..."

That says everything. This is nothing more than clickbait

Edit: Surprise surprise. He's good buddies with the King of Apple Angst - Louis Rossmann. I knew I'd seen this clickbaity garbage online somewhere before.
your comment says more about your understanding of the review process than it does about what he's doing.

Meh!

Dating myself, but been in IT since the 90s. Have not seen incidents like are tested in videos like this unless it was a catastrophic fall that resulted in injury of the user, packing in nonsensical locations on a checked bag, or a crazy drop or act of vandalism to get a “new” device from work.

I guess YMMV, and maybe my market / industry is more careful with their electronics? IDK.
Any device which explodes like this from a simple bend test should immediately be recalled. GOOG have a mega class lawsuit on their hands with this.

To me it seems somehow fishy, especially his reaction. Phone started to release highly toxic fumes and he was ok breathing them, weird to me
When did everything become a conspiracy? Is this an effect of "true crime" shows?

I mean, isn't it just possible what you saw is what happened?

Does his long history of credibility mean nothing?

People being people, in real life that phone could face even worse abuse, and apparently it would not take much to set it off.

Back then, Galaxy Note 7s were banned from aeroplanes for a potential fire risk, and as far as I remember, that was not even as dramatic as this. It seems Google skipped the lessons learned implementation and DFMEA phase in their product launch phase and testing was clearly not a priority.

At this point, a recall might be the only responsible move.

I've watched most of his videos and I didn't see him testing this more than previous phones. Seemed like a normal test to me, if anything he did less to it than I've seen him do to other phones.

Check his iPhone Air video where he tried his hardest to bend it and used machinery that had nothing to do with normal use. It finally bent but the battery still didn't explode.
I watch all of his videos, they have grown from being quite the benchmark of tech durability to a level where it is expected of him to destroy things.

People react and strive for extremes and unusual results far more than a device passing the test. His iPhone Air test also featured a press test where he could not bend tit by his hands. Completely ridiculous but fun to watch for most.

This one is no more extreme than that and I get it.

But does not change the fact that his content moving further into he wrong direction in the pursuit of clicks.

No-no, I believe this all was true. I just don’t believe that he didn’t knew that this is gonna happen or that this could happen. I believe he done some disassembly videos before or seen them online, so he knew where the batteries are. Honestly it doesn’t look very genuine like if he actually didn’t realize that this is gonna happen

Wait a minute. I was led to believe only Apple phones had any sort of issues?

What should we call, it "Firegate"???

Because there is nothing quite like watching a video letterboxed or pillarboxed in the middle of a square screen.
So dont unfold it in that case, but if you are watching a video while using other apps, especially apps which are nicer on a larger screen then it makes sense to unfold it.

Entertaining, but anyone who bends a foldable the wrong way in normal day to day usage shouldn't own a foldable.
The iPhone 6 had bending issues which were fixed in the 6S, issues which should have been revealed by their durability testing. The A12 iPad Pros also had bending issues at the buttons which Apple fixed with the next model. Giigle should have discovered this issue and reinforced the phone better.

The other side of the coin is that videos like these will bend and damage devices to their breaking point because thats what people want to see.

The guy does tear down videos
So his videos are essentially pointless for most individuals now unless you do something silly with these devices then you should have no problem gone are the days if you sit on a device it would bend.
It’s just like if you put your phone in your bag & keys scratch the screen then that’s on you

I don't think anyone would disagree with this. Durability issues should be addressed well before people like JerryRig get their hands on the phones.

I love my morning popcorn here. Pundits, detractors, naysayers. Thank you, parents, for keeping the fort.

On one side, Apple’s own old store magsafes leak some material and we’re presented with a iPhone Scratchgate… on the other, we got a Pixel catching fire after a slight bend and people scream conspiracy. So much popcorn!

For all the flashiness of JRE, Zach is putting the stress tests on most devices, trying his earnest to break it at potential weak points. I don’t listen to such videos, but by pinpointing major failures, he’s sure to be influencing the industry towards durable choices, or giving insights on a device’s durability so a user can be informed whether protection screens or shields are necessary.

I’ve had bendy phones after a year of normal use in the past. We’ve all had spicy pillows. We’ve all had scratched surfaces or screens, broken screens, drowned phones. When the mftg company listens and improves their stuff, we all win in the process. When a guy gets an anecdotal fire from a broken pillow, it puts the spotlight on that company. And I hope the Pixel team will do the good thing, lest a child bends it incorrectly in 3 years.

Sure but your "anyone who bends it that way" comment ignores things like accidentally sitting on it.
I didn't know JerryRig did an 'accidentally sit down with phone in back pocket' test. I will have to check that out. Personally, I've never sat down on a smartphone in my life. It's been really easy for me to never do this.

Amazing to see all the Google defenders here, pretending this is just some random who took a sledgehammer to the phone. Nope. Nice try. First time ever in testing it caught fire. Filled the room with smoke. Really, stop caping for Google. They're all grown up and can take care of themselves.

The folding iPhone will not have a square screen. It will be a 4:3 rectangle like an iPad mini.

We do not know why it caught fire but if I were to guess it was because it was bent and shorted as well as punctured which introduced oxygen into the mix. That being said I'm sure this is far from the norm and I don't see enough of this happening for Google to start a recall. Also, I'm pretty sure he has emphasized on several occasions that all of his videos are for entertainment purposes and nowhere near scientific. I am also genuinely surprised by the number of angry comments here, it's not that serious...
