Yeah they pretty much sell to us tech fans. But the people who buy the low cost androids whose specs match the ones on this Pixel are used to not getting much in the way of service or support beyond whatever they might get from a carrier or Best Buy/other retailers. If the price is right they will buy it. I know I would, given what the competition is offering, if I were in the market for phones at this level. I would imagine Google will be courting more carrier support for this particular model.

I would definitely be interested in seeing what the price on this phone ends up being. The point that has already been made is a good one: they’re not just competing against other budget models using this chip, but against last year’s flagships on steep discounts. They need to really be wise about the pricing.

I do think Google priced their flagship models too high. They did something of a correction for that over the holidays and I was able to get a top spec model for $200 off plus a an additional $230 off for a two year old Android phone I had. That brought the Pixel 3XL price down to a more palatable level.

The Pixel 3 series other than their camera seems to be compromised on build materials as it does not look or feel like a flagship. Apple and Samsung just look and feel better. Samsung has come a long way in materials and build quality, they look and feel premium. Apple was already there. To command the higher prices you have to do something better than just a camera.

The overly long notch is a huge strike against it but actually I was surprised how nice the 3XL looks and feels. It feels light despite its dimensions. I agree it is overpriced for what it is, though. However I feel that way about all of them now.

Sorry some people can see differences, that’s like saying 720 and 1080 is no difference but it’s a major difference. If that’s the case Apple would have not increased the pixel count on the XS Max.

Especially if you are using it with VR googles. Which I don't but some people do. Personally I think 720 to 1080 is a big enough difference, more so on TV's though, but 1080 vs 4k is a lot less noticeable.

So el Goog is going to compete against Apple's 'affordable' flagship with a stripped down midrange?

Good-Luck-WIth-That.jpg

+ no ugly notch
+ 3.5mm audio jack
+ Qualcomm radio
+ one of the best cameras on the market with Night Sight
+ smarter AI assistant, services, call screening
+ proper front facing stereo speakers

If they price this right at say $599 for Pixel 3 Lite and $699 for Pixel 3 XL Lite or less it'll be nail in the coffin for iPhone Xr. To compete with other Android manufacturers they really need to be more like $499 and $599 though.

I played with one during holiday shopping. It does feel lite. I did though think it's a much cheaper feeling device than it’s competitors. I also cannot understand why they put a orange button on their pink phone. Hideous and just a bad design choice.

There are cheaper phones out there with 1080p, Apple should not get a pass.

But you make it appear like Apples consumers/customer base is demanding a 1080 P display, are they really? Do ‘average consumers’ even really care about what resolution display is in the first place? I think what it comes down to, is they see a new form factor, an all display, new colors, which is exactly what Apple markets.

I can understand someone who is more ‘tech focused’ that wants a certain resolution for a display, but I don’t think the average consumer has any idea really what resolution is or cares to even understand it.

Yup, the XR having “only” the excellent 326 ppi display is mostly an anti-Apple talking point.

iPhone customers have loved the 326 ppi displays on the 4, 4s, 5, 5s, 6, 6s, 7, 8—and the XR. Also the iPad mini 4. 326 ppi displays aren’t undesirable/unacceptable just because higher density displays are available.

The larger 9.7/10.5/11.0/12.9 iPad displays are 264 ppi; how many complaints do you hear about iPad displays?

Yes, the XR doesn’t have a 400+ ppi display. It also doesn’t have dual cameras, IP68 water resistance, 3D Touch, 4GB of RAM, a 4x4 MIMO radio or an OLED screen. None of these features is necessary for the XR to be a great iPhone (though any one of them can be a deal breaker for a given buyer).

The Pixel 3 and the Pixel 3 XL sound like a dumpster fire. These phones are making even loyal Google users switch to iOS/other Android phones. I can’t see how these phones will be any better.

Ugly, outdated design. Plastic. 32GB storage. 4GB of RAM. Good luck selling this, Google.
Sorry what do you mean? The Pixel 3 and 3XL are the most successful Google phones to date.

Brilliant hardware with buttery smooth software. Apple could learn a lot from Google when it comes to things "just works". No issues whatsoever on my Pixel 3XL, lots of software bugs and random crashes on my iPhone XS Max as well as terrible wifi due to the poor Intel chip.

Problem with Google on hardware is they only do experiments. Now with Pixel they started doing at higher costs at the expense of poor consumers. It is always easy to keep one leg here and the other there without commitment. If you have problems in their mobiles or hardware, you are pretty much on your own in the wild to fix things...as there nil after sales service and support.
You are talking nonsense, at least here in the UK you get great support from Google. Not that you'll need it because with the Pixel 3 things just works. Remember that phrase Apple? The Pixel 3 is a great piece of hardware with a buttery smooth OS.

On the contrary with my iPhone XS Max I had regular crashes and other iOS problems on top of which the rubbish Intel modem ruins the wifi. I would suggest it's iPhone users that are taking part in a very expensive experiment.

Design is about personal opinion and you are perfectly entitled to yours. However the Not Pink has been pretty universally hailed as a great piece of design. Especially the orange button is throwback to classic designers such as Dieter Rams (Ive's great inspiration) and really finishes off the overall design.

I personally love the feel of the Pixel 3XL, the "brushed" glass finish not only feels great,
it also makes it less slippery and means that the Pixel doesn't pick up any fingerprints.

Yeah, the orange button should have been on the black version. /|\ ^._.^ /|\

Pixel count means very little.

Not if you’re comparing apples to apples. If both displays have comparable color gamuts and calibration, one with higher resolution will be noticeably more likelike. That video demonstrates that color fidelity is more critical than image sharpness, not that sharpness is inconsequential. Fortunately, you don’t have to choose between the two qualities since displays are sourced from two manufacturers who are improving both qualities routinely.
