The idea that I can talk with the information of the world, have have wide-ranging deep and philosophical conversations with an AI

Why do you want to have deep and wide ranging philosophical conversations with an AI bot?

I’m failing to understand the appeal
By the same token, I don’t understand people that want to have an AI boyfriend or girlfriend

Yeah, because it goes through their servers, not your device.
I suppose the question is whether that extra network latency is even noticeable. On my Mac, it isn’t like writing tools is that fast - there is some glowing stage before results appear. Other items like summaries have plenty of time to be computed before you look at your phone to see them. So, what is the point of on device processing? Are we really at a stage where we can’t trust any privacy contracts if we ship the data to the cloud?

Pass. I am trying to degoogle my life. I cannot accept their business model of selling my data.
Getting rid of Chrome was easy. Currently trying to get rid of Gmail.
Your "data" is but a grain of sand on a mile-long beach. No one notices or cares about your grain of sand. But along with all the other grains of sand, it creates a beach. I never understood why people were so against someone knowing what kind of detergent you use or what fast-food you order? That data is always collected somewhere you least expect it. The internet runs by collecting data...it's not just Google.

While I agree with the point that my data is a drop in a massive ocean, these companies are making billions from collecting our data while providing these “free” services, which often provide minimal improvements to our lives. I’d prefer you to not collect my data and if your service is worth it, then let me pay for it.

People are very lonely these days. Things are not OK, and everyone is feeling it. We’ve developed systems that isolate us from intangibles that sustain us emotionally. Instead of trying to restore those ways of living, though, we’re being sold more technology to fill spaces that technology cannot fill. It’s a process that has been going on for a long time, and it’s going to be hard to stop.

..and what happens when Gemini begins to speak with Apple Intelligence? What then? A Global Meltdown the likes we have never seen.
😉

I notice it, actually. I noticed when I started getting ads for cancer treatment after I used Google maps for directions to a doctor appointment at a clinic that also treats cancer patients.
I notice when I get ads related to something I was reading about on Wikipedia or other websites in chrome that doesn’t have anything to do with my life.
It’s always creepy and gross and invasive and still badly misunderstands my interests as a consumer. I can’t have a private interaction or inquiry without that information being used to target ads at me. Anything I can do to opt out of that business model, I will.

Ever tried using an ad-blocker? And again, some person isn't sitting at Google looking at your data and deciding what you see in ads, it's an algorithm. There's nothing "creepy" about it. There is plenty of software that blocks trackers, cookies, etc., if it bothers you.

Yeah, because it goes through their servers, not your device.
Does 100% Apple Intelligence run locally? Features which runs through the server should be available across all devices.
It’s the same with Car Play, if you want newer version, you need to buy a NEW CAR! I do agree that new version is deeply integrated into the car but current carplay is the same for the last 5-6 years!

No ****ing **** someone at Google isn’t sitting there looking at it. Did I say that was the problem?
You know that apps that aren’t browsers don’t have the option of an ad blocker right? And simply not being able to see the end results of them selling my data isn’t the solution. As much as I can avoid it, I do not want them to collect or sell my data in the first place. What are you not understanding about that?

I just asked it to describe my desktop and it did a bang up job - even got my terrible handwriting on my pink sticky on my external drive -

"The image you sent shows a desk setup with a computer, a microphone, headphones, and a keyboard. There's also a pink sticky note with the words "FLAC + Photos" written on it, suggesting that the person is working on audio and image files.
The computer screen displays a file explorer window with various folders, including " "Serum," "Sheet Music," "Spire Soundbanks," and "Sylenth1." These folder names hint at the person's interests in music production or audio editing.
The presence of the microphone and headphones further supports the idea of audio work. The keyboard is likely being used for inputting commands or editing files.
Without more context, it's difficult to say exactly what the person is doing. However, the image provides clues about their potential hobbies or profession, which may involve music production, audio editing, or working with digital media."

10/10 - eat your heart out Siri !

I'm not understanding how an ad, based on a search you did in a browser that apparently you took no precautions on protecting your data, you find "creepy and gross and invasive". Use a different (free) search engine or take other steps to block tracking.

You can actually use different DNS servers to block ad servers that will work on all apps whether they are browsers or not.

Did it occur to you that not using google services at all is one way I’m “taking precautions”? That was my entire point.

Being in Europe I'm happy with this app, and with the freedom of choice. No LLM is perfect so being able to choose is excellent. Imagine Apple AI s#cking big time, which it will if it's as good as Siri, then it's great not being forced to stick to that junk.

Why don't you use Ghostery?

Heavily censored just like Gemma. Don't waste time trying to make it speak out against certain backwards violent beliefs it will tell you that you are the offensive one.
