Plenty of people own a DESKTOP and a NOTEBOOK . . . because, you know, you can't take your monster desktop on trips.

Point is he was criticizing someone for spending alot of money on electronics... when he could have donated some money to charity. And yet he owns two top-of-the-line computers. Just kinda... ironic to me.

They both look...scary :D

The majority here may hate the idea of an Android iPad clone, but I like the idea of one.

<---- Bit of an Android fanboy. :p

Google isn't going to copy apple. They are going to release something with key features that the ipad lacks (and the ipad lacks some features, does it not?)

And about google trying to bring down apple - this is the nature of business. Eat or be eaten. It's amazing how few people understand this, or how competition in a relatively free market drives innovation.

...still saving that $499 for the new macbook pros "coming tuesday", not buying an ipad.

:apple:

Google's tablet will most likely have better specs, and probably be cheaper.

Ok, you seem to like numbers and figures.

So you tell me how they're gonna do that. The Joo-Joo couldn't manage it. $499 is a VERY aggressive price. What makes you think Google can beat that without cutting specs? (Let alone raising them.)

Or is Google's plan to lose money on the device and make it all back through ads? That's possible, but it'll certainly dampen the spirts of everyone here bragging about how free and open it's gonna be. Not being "open" enough to kill all the built-in ads probably isn't on their list of expectations.

Good luck to google.

I would buy an ipad though. I picture the features any device made by an internet company to be as transient as internet content.

Sorry it just an issue with branding in my opinion. I picture the device trying to chase the latest on-line fads and getting bogged down with last years options.

Apple DID not invent or innovate on tables, we had table for about 10 years now and the OS is part of the original project (iPhone), Amazon was the real innovator (even when they didn't do it right and didn't take advantage of the starting position).

Actually "Tables" were invented many 1000's of years ago, interesting by Jobs' great great great great great great great great great ancestor, who actually had a devote following and made other innovative items such as the three-legged stool.
He sold these items in a "concept" store where customers could come in and try the lastest creations before buying them.

You:
you signature says even more than that. You bought a Nexus One, an iPhone 3GS and an iPod Touch? Maybe you should start donating more money to charity instead of filling your life with redundant gizmos that you flaunt on the internet?
AND you......
Coming from the guy with a Mac pro and MBP?

Can both donate me money so I can pay my taxes. Thank you!!!:D

Good.

I have the OG one. :p

This cannot be a bad thing at all. It will only keep Apple on its toes releasing better and better iPad hardware and software. By this time next year my second gen iPad will no doubt have a camera and a sandwich-maker.

I think the story here is that the tablet market may finally be ready to open up, and Microsoft isn't looking like it's going to be a big player. In my opinion, if there is only one player in a market, it's not really a market.

I still think the monotonic droning of "competition is good" every time we hear a story about another knock off is a bit cultish, but the truth is that competition in a profitable market is inevitable irregardless of goodness.

So, there should be at least two big players, and Microsoft has been trying this for years and has already been deemed a failure. Of the smart phone systems out there, I think Android is probably the only other one capable of scaling up like this-- in fact I think it's better suited to a tablet than a phone.

All of that said, I also have noticed that Google has been becoming a bit Microsoftish in how they use their corporate power-- what naturalists would call "threat displays". They show the signs of attack hoping that will be enough and they don't need to actually risk the fight to maintain alpha status.

While you can't give Apple credit for completely creating these markets, it's hard to deny that they were there before the markets took off.
I think it would be fair to say that they were there *at the inflection point* in all of these markets. Either they are responsible for making the markets viable or they're brilliant at market prediction-- either way, they're the best leading indicator out there.
No matter what you Google lovers believe in, I think that Google is moving too fast.
I see nothing like fast from Google. What I see is lack of focus and flailing. In this case, I think this is all about trying to maintain their advertising dominance once platforms go more mobile-- in which case I'm not sure they're moving fast enough.

Point is he was criticizing someone for spending alot of money on electronics... when he could have donated some money to charity. And yet he owns two top-of-the-line computers. Just kinda... ironic to me.

And that'd be a good point if the cost of the items was his point. But his criticism was about the redundancy of the items in question. Not the actual price.

Heh. I'm 19 living in an apartment working minimum wage crap jobs. Good thing my associates degree helped me so much! Let's stop the money talk.. it's making me sad.

I know I could have asked this in an iPad section but Ill ask anyway.
Its been over a week, how is the iPad holding out?
Were waiting for them up here eh' ;)

Google copying Apple. Why is this news?

It'd be refreshing to see Google actually doing something other people aren't doing. I guess that would be sooo 2004.

I guess that you will agree that Apple's iAd is not a copy of Google's business line ;)

Whether you like or not... Google and Apple are competitors, and the latter can't do anything against a winner :D
If, and only if, Apple would open its "king" platform, it would stand some chances, otherwise... the future is Google :)

Yeah, and it's completely illogical. One doesn't donate more for every item one doesn't buy. For example, I didn't buy a Mac Pro last year, yet I am sure that fact didn't affect the amount I donated to charity. Indeed, the biggest philanthropists are often quite wealthy and buy all kinds of things---and also donate generously to charity. One has nothing to do with the other.

Google making computers

Personally, I'd like to see Google making computers. Their stuff is pretty good and if it gets Steve Jobs off his keister and taking his computer using customers more serious, I'm all for it.

Google can't do UI. Just look at GMail and Google Wave. I forget who called Windows XP the Fisher Price OS but Fisher Price and Windows XP seem to be the inspiration for Google UI design. Good luck with that iPad clone. Chrome OS is anti-elegant.

So many comments to reply to...

Chrome OS has "web Apps" and will fully incorporate HTML5 to make these appear more traditional.

The exponential growth of Android appears to be at odds with the above statement. Have you used it?
I think Apple has some serious competition. The new microsoft KIN women phones actually look pretty damn cool and makes both the new OS4 and Android OS look old.
Check them out here.

Google copying Apple. Why is this news?

...

This is just silly.

It's like saying Apple copied the dozen Chinese manufactures who have been making touch tablets with mobile OSs for a few years now.

I, and many others, are looking forward to this. I'd pay a premium over the iPad for Flash support and more open environment.

And you know what, most likely Android tablets will be outselling the iPad within a year....

News Flash !! Google is out to do whatever it can to bring down Apple,Inc.

This isn't news. It's a disgrace.

Such hyperbole. Google's responsibility is to make as much money for its shareholders as it can. If that means going into umpteen markets to do so, then so be it. Stop acting like people should kneel before Apple. They've entered plenty of markets where they were not the first to arrive.

Again this just goes back to the iPhone when it first came out. It was the next best thing and other companies had to make their own clone of it. Their inturn not being original. This is going to happen the same with the iPad. All of the other products that will be forthcoming are just iPad clones in a way. They have the iPad design in the most basic form.
