I can confidently say that you are LYING about owning a Nexus One.

I have 3G S and I generally like it a lot, but the Nexus One's screen is noticeably better, both indoors and outdoors.

lol, if you insist. Here is some proof:

So there ya have it. I do own one (and the dock). The screen is impossible to read in sunlight, and the colors are alright but it has a major issue with oranges.

I don't think that google thinks before they do anything. The nexus one has not been selling well because of their horrible online only promotion, buzz was a failure because they decided that nobody wants privacy, android is quickly becoming frustrating because of the picking and choosing of devices that get the updates, they bought admob when they clearly have a monopoly on online advertising, they tried to defy the chinese government, and now they're gonna throw android on a third party device and call it their own. I hate to break it to you google, but all these quick and unthought decisions are starting to make me loose faith in you.

He has size issues when it comes to Apple. I totally understand.

When Eric isn't selling phone operating systems, he's out selling rugs and discount electronics. He's the KING of low prices!!!

Yes, because the slate/tablet/whatever that Apple made was such an original idea.

Lawsuit Brewing?

While an unsurprising development given Google's and Apple's increasing overlap, a Google tablet would offer yet another area of direct competition between the two companies and likely escalate tensions even further.

When Google puts this out, i bet that Apple will file a lawsuit for patent infringement, whether or not it's warranted.

They are growing rapidly as well

Not ONE mention of software or the App Store ecosystem.

It's what drives the whole show. Software ecosystem, software ecosystem, software ecosystem.

The state of the android software is better by the day...

"Android is booming. It more than doubled its market share last quarter, knocking off Palm for the fourth place spot in the smartphonemarket. It stands about one good quarter away from jumping Microsoft and seizing third place, nipping at the heels of second place player Apple."

http://www.dailytech.com/article.aspx?newsid=18080

and really how many apps do you need on your phone? All the basics are covered imo, some specialist ones I would love (like Skyplayer) for the majority im good though

I agree about the originality... making an android tablet is like copying Dell.
What happened to the Chrome OS tablet; that'd be more original

You got a good point there. I'm wondering if they decided to dump Chrome OS. It would make sense to use that vs an android tablet. Sounds like this is going to be another one of those "me too" devices.

Maybe Google can do like they did for the Nexus One and not advertise it and only distribute it online. Then, they can fail miserably and maybe at one point in time put themselves up for sale like Palm.

Apple will crush them. Crush!

Competition makes everyone better!

But, I have even less interest in an Android based tablet than I do in an iPhone OS one. Dear Google, do what Apple won't and make me a one pound tablet running Chrome OS. That would be a laptop replacement!

Or better yet, one that dual-boots Android and Chrome OS (Chrome OS by defult) :)

+1 +1 +1 !!!

Google will need to be backed up by developers of games, apps, utilities and more. It will NEVER happen. Trust me. Know one is going to take the risk and would much rather follow the leader. Plus that. Apple products are just more fun, why would you go anywhere else?

I think last time I checked, over 100 apps and being submitted DAILY to the app store. With that kind of contribution I think Google has a chance and maybe I will go down and buy a Nexus today! -- Not --

Maybe their pad will be more than a giant iPhone. Even if it were a giant Nexus it would still be miles ahead of the lame iKotex.

No matter what you Google lovers believe in, I think that Google is moving too fast.

Not a good thing IMO.

IMO, Google is going the way Sun did in the late 80s with their first initial success. They shot off in all directions at once, burned up a ton of resources and not much product was delivered. Remember the Sunbeam project guys!

That's great. So on the plane when you want to watch video and listen to music, Android, being a cloud computing style of OS, will be useless.

This sounds like fail.

In what ways is the Nexus One ahead of the iPhone? I am dying to know, because I find it to actually be far behind the iPhone.

People talk about the Cloud like it's something new, when in reality it's just the same plain old servers that have been hosting your neighbor's dog washing business for ages.

This is to be expected by now. While you can't give Apple credit for completely creating these markets, it's hard to deny that they were there before the markets took off.
Whether you're an Apple fan or not, the above is absolutely true. .

The majority here may hate the idea of an Android iPad clone, but I like the idea of one.

Me too. I don't have an Android phone, but I do boot from my Android Live CD :)

Steady steady...

... in that case, Apple is getting majorly owned already, but youre not quite right:

"In July 2009 Google's Android Market was only adding about 1,500 apps a month. That number has steadily soared upwards and last month, it added 9,330 new apps.

( a little more than 100 a day no?)

"Currently there are over 42,000 apps in the Android Market. If the current pace of growth acceleration continues, Google could match Apple's current app count (around 150,000 apps) within a year or less."

"One sign of health in the Android Market is the rising number of paid apps. Another perpetual criticism of the platform leveled by iPhone proponents is "all the apps are free". That's hardly true any more; today 40.4 percent of apps are paid"

I bought a Droid, since the iPhone is not available yet on Verizon, hoping that it would best the experience I had owning the iPhone 3G before my company said it wouldn't pay for "that" service.... To me, the Android platform was buggy at best. The android marketplace was a complete joke... no good sorting capabilities... stupid apps everywhere.... most had less than stellar ratings, and the "suggested" apps I downloaded crashed frequently. The task manager app was my most frequently used app due to the fact that Android doesn't actually close down applications and they continue to suck up resources and battery long after you stop using or close the app. Battery removal was great on the Droid... 'cause you needed it to reset your device when it locks up.

I had high hopes that the Android platform would be good enough to replace the apple iphone os for me, but it was a huge and utter let down. If the current version or revisions based on this version 2.1 make it to a tablet hardware box, be prepared for a Windows Vista launch flashback. What sounds good on paper and specs fell flat on it's face.

I have an iPad, and would not consider myself a fanboi. I enjoy it, and it works for what I believe a tablet should be. Could it be better? sure. Does it NEED a camera? no. Does it need an SD card slot? no. Could it benefit from either? sure. (actually, I would get more mileage from a CF card slot instead)

I know a market will exist for an android based tablet, along with a windows 7 tablet and the Apple iPad. Time will tell what survives and what becomes just a feint memory (or something we just want to totally forget). My feeling is that Apple gets "it". From industrial design, to software design for the overall "experience". They just get "it" You may not be getting the bleeding edge spec sheet or all the options, but you get a beautifully crafted device which you can instantly tell was thouroughly thought out.

All the "me too" makers (at least up to now) have just not figured "it" out. Driven by minute profit margins and a inherent need to produce a better spec sheet, they miss the important points, like installing a desktop class OS in a touch device without a mouse or physical keyboard..... So, lets cut corners and overspec the hardware and put NO thought into the user experience. Cut down the weight by using a plastic case. Cut down the cost by using a low res, lower quality LCD. Maybe our customers will overlook the terrible build if we just add 5 more USB ports, 2+ cameras, 2 SD Card sots, Express Card and SATA interfaces, HDMI ..... And lets just throw a gimmicky touch based overlay menu on Windows 7 to mask it a bit so people forget it is actually Windows.

Google has a leg up on most of the "me too" makers due to the absence of Windows, but they really need all hands on deck to work on the polish of Android, and come up with a comprehensive, thought out update policy so there is only 1 version of the software out there.

I hope it works out for them to help drive the Apple iPhone OS development.... they need to have the competition to drive innovation... from everyone.

Oh god, here we go.

[*]Why does everything need a camera? Maybe a future revision, but this device isn't pointless without a camera. Heck, I could see Apple releasing a dock-connector camera attachment just to shut people like you up

A camera attachment, great, one more thing to lug around and lose.

[*]HDMI.... WHY? This thing doesn't output in HD so what the heck would the benefit of HDMI-out be?

Because in 2010 in the age of HD screens, this thing should be outputting in HD.

[*]Quit being impatient. You ARE getting multitasking, so quit crying because it is not coming as fast as you want.

I can wait for that.

[*]16:9? I don't really want a long skinny device, no thank you.

Oh, so when it's something you don't want, it's ok. But when we point out missing features, it's another matter.

[*]SD card? Get the attachment.

Yes, another thing to carry with you and lose.

[*]More memory? 64GB isn't enough? Are you aware that you cant install Android apps to external memory so it is actually WAY more memory constricted than the iPad?

I've already filled up half my 32gb in one week and I have one movie and two tv shows on it, plus all my photos and music. Yes, in 2010, 64gb should not be the limit.

[*]OLED? NO! I have the Nexus One with an OLED screen and it is absolutely 100% IMPOSSIBLE to use it outside when there is any sunlight.

Can't use the ipad very well outside either.

[*]Printing support? Coming in app form im sure

Standard feature that should not rely on third party support. No printing, really, in 2010?

[*]Flash? Ha... I can't even figure out how to get Flash working on my Nexus One. Flash is overrated. Hulu can easily go HTML5, and flash games are NOT optimized for a touch interface, most require WASD controls, arrow keys, or a mouse.

I don't care about flash either.

Any other terrible points you would like to make?

How about you? And I do own a Nexus One too.

I ignore sigs but I can obviously read if I was able to respond to you, nice try at an insult though. So you own one, and after using Mail, the new App store, apps like ABC, and Pages your conclusion is still just a giant iPhone? Wow, you are clearly doing it wrong.

The UI is just like the iphone, yes. Some small enhancements like pop up menus, oh boy. One would think Android will make some adjustments for a tablet too. Since we haven't seen any real world demo's yet it's hard to speculate though.

BTW, I do like my ipad and intend to keep it.

No matter what you Google lovers believe in, I think that Google is moving too fast.

Not a good thing IMO.

Because they are moving faster than Apple? Android has the momentum that Apple had about two years ago.

The thing that Google/Android is doing significantly different to Apple is that they constantly release new stuff .. where Apple collects everything for a whole year and puts it out in one go. That makes Android appear to be moving so fast.
As you can see with the iPad, there is not really much to be done do port the OS over to a larger screen .. it is mainly the apps that need to be reworked .. so I really cant see them doing anything too fast here.

Plus if anybody in the business, Google got the cash to support exploring new areas.
