Then why don't you have a Nexus?

Because he already has a iPhone, Timmy. It was pretty self-explanatory in his post. It sounds like nexus is his second choice after iPhone.

One of the great things about this world is you can actually like thing A and thing B, and prefer thing A without automatically having to hate thing B. Cell phones are a consumer product, not a holy war.

Like Facebook - I think Arn and the crew need to add more than just a thumbs up for posts...

I fail to see how Google making their own phones would be considered monopoly. That's literally the silliest thing I've heard. I mean Apple does the same thing, sans search engine.

I'm not sure why setting a default search engine would be considered monopolistic practice when the user can change it if they want.

It's simple. Google wants to control hardware, software and ecosystem.
Just like Apple...

Then why don't you have a Nexus?

Because I am heavily invested in the apple ecosystem: mac, appleTV, iPad, and apple watch. That and most of my "circle" uses iPhones so we use iMessage and shared photos. Google seems to play nicer with iPhones than the reverse.

I wish I could like your post 100 times.

Like any smart business they smell blood in the water and are ready to take a bite out of Apple. Declining sales, yesterday's tech for tomorrow's prices and (easiest of all to pounce on) ridiculously high profit margins. Competition breeds innovation, perhaps this'll get Apple to stop phoning it in (pun intended) and get back to their core business.
When Apple's "yesterday tech" like the A9 processor runs rings around the the best snapdragon chips in single-core performance, I am not sure that is something you want to boast about. That's like laughing at someone for scoring his worst ever in a Math test, but his "worst" is still the highest in the entire class. You end up just laughing at yourself.

Apple's obscene profit margins come because Apple is able to offer a significantly differentiated product that its customers value and are willing to pay top dollar for, and this is made possible because Apple has tight control and integration over its own ecosystem. Tons of Android phone manufacturers have tried to compete with Apple on price, and the end result is that their own profit margins wind up circling the toilet, even as Apple continues to vacuum up the bulk of the industry's profits.

What can Google do here to buck the trend, especially when Android is increasingly common? Google's efforts will be interesting to watch, in the very least, but I am not waiting with baited breath.

My wife bought a Google phone, well more accurately I bought her one and she hated me for it. It was absolitely terrible, never ever again !

As an Apple head, I think this is good news. Not that I think Apple is being complacent. But Competition is always a good thing. It Spurs invovation. Someone mentioned this, but Google picked the perfect time to pounce. Apple iPhone sales declined for the first time this year, and with the iphone 7 rumored to be basically the same design as the iphone 6s, they are definitely vulnerable for an attack. A radical redesign of the iPhone isn't coming until 2017 for the 10th anniversary of the iPhone, so that'll give Google time to steal Apple's thunder with the unveiling of the Google Phone. Again, as an Apple fan, I think this is a good thing. Competition is healthy and benefits consumers like me.

Oh, then try switching to a Google ecosystem, and tell us how better it is...

This post brought to you by GoogleRumors.

Because the name MacRumors means it must assume all it's readers are like ostriches, sticking their head in the sand when it comes to Apple's competition or other events that affect the company or its products?

Apple's business model is a walled garden. That doesn't mean people interested in the company and products must live in one.

You bought the wrong one then, Both the Nexus I used to have and my Sony Z5 have been excellent. The Z5 is waterproof and has a headphone socket

? Your responses and quotes make no sense? I literally just said if I did not have an iPhone it would be a nexus because the experience is very similar to an apple device.

I do have an on hub though and love the hell out of that thing.

At this point, yes, the outward user experience for iOS and Android is similar.

Apple's and Google's privacy and data collection policies are the main differentiators. That and the walled garden does offer a bit more security -- not perfect as we've seen with recent issues with apps in the Chinese iTMS, but far more secure than the hardly no vetting at all Google offers.

Matt, don't. It's like arguing with a zealot. No matter what you say, you're wrong.

Ha!
They are like TV scheduling execs who put their prime shows in the SAME slot as an established popular show.
Why does Google think anyone would buy their phone?

Are their privacy policies really all that different? Last I checked - they weren't.

I think far too many (not you - because I believe you top be an educated poster) still think that Google sells personal data to advertisers. As in the actual data. It amazes me that some people can still believe that/argue that even after they've been show it to be otherwise.

Is this a legitimate question? I can't tell because it it seems quite obvious.

I wonder why you feel so threatened by people who vary in opinion with yours. Or that you think that someone has to be all in on one ecosystem instead of enjoying any/all of them.
Because he is right, the comments are infested with people saying they will go to android...

Good! It's nice to have choice! I figured Google would have been done this.

Ain't that the truth! But to quote Douglas Adams: “We can't win against obsession. They care, we don't. They win.”

Good. Google has the resources to do this successfully. Having a reference design out their to showcase the OS features will be be good. Similar to Microsoft producing the Surface line up.

Apple needs to realize you can't just make a phone slimmer a a new colors nd expect people to buy new phones. Apple needs to be forced to really innovate.

I'm really curious where Apple will be in 5 years.
Robbed by the taxman, impoverished by a misguided acquisition of Tesla, beaten by competitors in the mobile space and left for dead in the alley, they will survive only as a subsidiary of Government Motors. :D
