It’s sad that sites like The Verge and WSJ turned this into a green bubble social status thing for clicks instead of explaining what the actual issue is. This notion that teens have social anxiety because they show up as a green bubble on their friends phone is ridiculous. But annoyance because their group chat experience isn’t as good? That’s legit. I’m glad Apple is going to make that experience better.
I'm old, so while I tease my friends about green bubbles, it's not a status thing. Just that our group message is likely hosed.

But kids, they make everything a status symbol. From wearing last year's tennis shoes to the car they drive. The bubble thing is just a shortcut to green equals poor Android user. And yes, I know there are expensive Androids, but we're talking about averages here.

What kids are you talking about? Kids nowadays don’t care about stuff like that since retro and old stuff is trendy.

Most ppl have at least one social media
Indeed. Check my original post. They both had social media apps, but not the same one. He has SnapChat, but she does not. She has Instagram, but that didn't help in this case.

It's ridiculous that this is now what communication has become.

I think that's illustrative of the ludicrousness of it all. Most people (including my wife apparently) aren't going create an account just to send one text.
It speaks more to me about how important the recipient is to the person doing the sending. Like, if someone WANTS to send a birthday message, then do what’s needed to send a birthday message. If someone doesn’t want to send a birthday message, then don’t send a message.

I can see how it could get complex, though, for someone who may want the recipient that the sender to think the sender is important to them while the recipient is not ACTUALLY important to the sender.

Nah. I disagree completely.

I wouldn't expect anyone, close or not, to create new accounts that they wouldn't otherwise use, on third party platforms for my sake just because I happened to use that one social media platform. It's ridiculous.

Should any one platform hold the future of all text messaging for the entire world? That needs to be opened up, and if RCS has to be built upon to become the standard, so be it.
WhatsApp is pretty much it for the majority of the world (with the notable exception of China, where WeChat is the primary messaging platform). That's why the whole iMessage versus RCS competition might be moot anyway.

According to snapchat
“It is important to have a valid email address associated with your Snapchat account.”
Hide my email would be used to create an account quickly without having to create a new email address.
It’s important to have one but it’s not required. My email and phone number are not attached to my snap.

Any user just sees my snap username

High resolution photos over RCS is good. Even Facebook Messenger will lower the resolution of photos sent through it. Very annoying. Don't always want to have to email photos to people.

Your phone number/email address may not be shown, but one of those MUST be entered to create an account.

For anyone that wants to communicate with anyone on Snapchat and they don’t already have an account, they could use “hide my email” to create an account, thus not using their telephone number OR their “real” email account.

Then, that would mean the fictional conundrum is not a conundrum at all, you just wouldn’t send the message. Done.

Years late but better late than never.
And it would have been never if China hadn’t forced them.

Maybe if the FCC would do anything useful they would have forced it here, along with forcing the telcos to do it right and not just half ass it and price gouge for it.

He: Yeah I think he may have WhatsApp but I don't have his contact info.
Me: No a text. Just send a text.
She: I don't know his phone number.
Me: Arrgh...

Ok... your wife doesn't know his phone number.

But does her brother know his phone number? Do you know his phone number?

Your wife is obviously is close enough to this person to want to send him a birthday message. But are none of you close enough to have his actual phone number?

I'm curious. Are teens still actually getting FaceBook accounts? I had been under the impression that FaceBook was in gradual decline, being seen as more of an "old people" form of social media.

Fun fact... teens eventually become old people.

:p

I think they eventually found it. Or maybe they found his WhatsApp info. I had left the room by then.

The guy moves around a LOT for his job. He gets stationed in different countries for a few years at a time, and he always gets a local number.

Heh. I figured someone would say that. The report I had read was that teens aren't signing up like they once were, but as they get older, they still aren't signing up. Even those who do sign up are deleting their accounts more frequently than previously. It suggested that although are still a bazillion accounts out there, the user demographic is aging because of this.

Snapchat is much worse off though. I didn't even know people still used Snapchat.

RCS is another example of why Google is poor at innovation. Does anyone remember how they pushed their AMP that it ended up in everyone hating it and eventually people on Reddit even made a bot to convert AMP links to regular ones
