Hey guys. So I ordered the red nexus 5 and then 24 hours after I had buyers regret and canceled the order. The thing is the nexus 5 came today with UPS so I called Google to see what the deal was and the long and short of it was if I decide to keep the phone I get no warranty on the device but if I send it back and repurchase I get to take advantage of warranty. So basically I get a free phone  ? I feel kind of bad almost like I want to send it back so I don't feel like i'm robbing them lol:( What would you guys do or does anyone have similar stories ?

I'd send it back personally....

Did they literally say you could keep it and they wouldn't charge you ? or is that your interpretation of what they said.... Clearly miscommunication has already happened once, are you sure it hasn't happened again.

Forget the morality of this predicament, I'd be concerned you will likely end up paying for the device you do not want. For the sake of peace of mind, I would just send it back.

So they really didn't charge you? Consider yourself lucky, keep the phone, and enjoy it! Your intention wasn't to steal anything, and Google has enough cash already, so....

They literally said i'm getting the refund if I decide to keep it or send it back and that if i keep it I won't be able to get warranty service on it.

If that's what they said, I'd ask them for that in writing / email as confirmation. Otherwise it's your word against a customer service rep.

But if they are being straight with you, then keep it clearly with their blessing.

Well, I guess I would also be careful considering this. You might have talked to a clueless sales rep and tomorrow another one calls you with different news... At least I'd keep it wrapped for a few days...and I'd make damn sure they've told you they're not sitting on your credit card number and will still charge you.

Yep exactly.....

One word against another, and literally seen this before where they do not have to honor what the customer service rep said if that rep went beyond their remit.

So unless you get them to confirm they won't charge you, be very careful....

Check your credit card balance online every day until your next statement. If you are not charged after 30 days or one statement cycle, you should be clear. Then I would feel safe to unbox it.

The amount is on my credit card but as a temporary authorization. I guess i'll watch it to see if it posts or falls off and then decide what to do. I mean if I get to keep the phone and also my money I don't know if i could sleep at night. Maybe i'm just weird

Well, if you feel bad about keeping it then send it back man. Having a conscience is not weird at all :)

However I would still wait to see that the money doesn't get withdrawn. You may have a conscience, but I wouldn't bet on Google's sales department having one ;)

They will charge you eventually.

Seriously doubt they will give it to you for free.

This happens all the time. I'm sure you'll see an actual charge appear on your card soon.

That sounds rather dubious or just straight up lack of knowledge on Google's part. They're not in the business of just giving away $300+ electronic devices.

The glass half empty in me says don't believe what the rep says. I would get further confirmation or either send the device back.

Update guys

The whole situation didn't sit well with me so I called back and they forwarded me to a shipping specialist and he didn't outright say send it back but they would appreciate if I did and that they would cover any shipping expenses if I decided to repurchase in the future. They sent me a shipping label to drop it off at UPS. I feel better :)

Kudos, that was very stand up of you.

Agreed. I would send it back for this reason as well.

You could've probably kept it but then conscience would bother you. Plus when a company provides a good service with problem free returns/refunds, you should not rip them off.

According to the Federal Trade Comission, unordered merchandise that is shipped to your home is yours to keep and can be considered a free gift.

I would have definitely kept it.

Are you kidding me?? A free Nexus 5!!

Google won't go bankrupt if you hadn't send it back. C'mon now!

If google straight up told me I was getting a refund whether I decided to keep the phone or not....you bet your ass I would keep the phone. I would ask for an email confirmation, but I surely would keep it.

How could you not sleep good knowing you got a free phone? I could attack on so many levels haha :)
