They gonna keep shooting themselves in the foot? FFS, get your act together, Apple, and don't release a product until it's ready, and furthermore don't deny a competitor a fair advantage because you messed up. This is why I despise the closed garden system...

Come into the real world for a moment.

You're reacting to rumors that Google may have already submitted a Maps app to the App Store. And you are assuming Apple might delay for no reason. Do you know if Apple had a chance to renew its deal with Google on maps or not or under what terms? No, you don't.

Do you think Google Maps are perfect? NO. They certainly are NOT. Even after years and years and years they SUCK. They had problems in Southern California but they're absolutely unreliable in the Atlanta metro area. I always, always, always double-check with Bing and at least one other service. Does anyone complain? Would you know if they did? I submit corrections to Google for what little good it'll do. I also participate in the OpenStreetMap project.

This is Apple's first role out of Maps ever. You cannot expect perfection.

having bleed in 6 colors since '83...

I'm done!

iPhone 4s - yea it is faster but really? was that an update?
Lion - SUCKS BIG TIME!!!! (The mac in not a phone or a pad... IT"S A COMPUTER!!!!!!)
Mt. Lion - Better but honestly "Not ready for prime time" (and still stop think the computer is an iOS device)
iOS 6 - are you kidding me?!
iPhone - well time will tell but it runs on iOS 6 so...

So now for me i think it maybe time to try another OS... but what?

anyone have a suggestion?

already got google maps on iphone 4s?

a google maps icon has appeared on page 6 of the apps on my iphone 4s after i updated to ios 6. i haven't downloaded it (and it doesn't appear in the app store anyway). has anyone else seen this?

I think I miss Steve Jobs more every day. This new Maps app is such a step backwards. Ridiculous that no one senior enough at :apple: saw this coming and was willing/able to put the change on hold.

Bring back Google Maps!

I understand that some people are having issues, and I'm not calling them liars, but both the Google version from iOS 5 and the Apple version from iOS 6 of Maps have worked flawlessly for me (other than occasionally thinking Boardwalk in Colorado is Boardwalk in New York in both versions). I'm a delivery driver, so it's incredibly important for me to have a good Maps app handy, and both have done a good job. I lean toward liking Apple's a bit better because I can just swipe my thumb across the top for the next direction rather than hit a tiny button (I have an iPhone 4), but honestly the change hasn't affected me much. It would be even better with an iPhone 5, which I have a certain interest in... :p

Point is, Apple Maps is working for me. It's not utterly broken or something.

Your expectations are way too high and no product would meet your requirements or would you find a company that would read your mind on what is important for you.

You best develop your own software and hardware and see how that goes.

The iOS 6 map for my home area is 'primitive', to say the least, but it seems accurate.

And how hard could it be for Apple to just hack the app out of the older version of iOS and make it standalone? How hard would it be for a 'hacker' to take the iOS builds and extract the app part of the Maps applet and make it standalone.

Well, probably a lot harder than it would seem, but could it be done? Although I guess jailbreak and iOS 6 probably aren't possible yet...

I think the phrase 'Your Mileage May Vary' comes to mind.

I remember once leaving the Fort Myers Airport, heading North on Treeline, and looking at the map app to see how to get to Sanibel Island. We got to Daniels and turned left, thinking that Sanibel was to the west, and I was watching the dot on the app actually turn EAST and continue east for nearly a quarter inch. I freaked for a second, but in an Emily Litella moment, the dot stopped and started moving east until it caught up with us. I laughed so hard I scared the person driving who then tried to get me to say what the heck was so funny. We both laughed, and my relationship with the Maps app changed. I remember getting lost in Boston with the Maps app taking me down streets the wrong way, and streets that had obviously been permanently closed off. GPS is a friend, when it's right, a trickster at times, and a son of a bitch when it's wrong. It's provided many moments of angst and hilarity... I'll miss it, but the 'turn-by-turn was awkward at best. I'll not miss that.

If a janitor had tested it they would have known it wasn't ready for prime time.

Would you continue to go to a new restaurant with bad food and hope some day they will get better.
Would you continue to go to a new automobile service shop if you had a bad experience.

Same goes here. Apple need not to grow on customers. They are not a non-profit doing social service. Get their act right and release it, particularly when you want it to be a secret. Or release it in parallel and improve the product. When your product is at par remove other one.

Imagine if Google Maps is available as an option on Day 1, we wouldn't be having this discussion. Even as standalone app, Apple probably won't allow Google Maps to integrate with other apps on iOS 6.

Of course they saw it coming, they are not idiots. But they trust that their marketing is so strong at this point, that the lemmings will buy it anyway. I don't think they are after more marketshare by now... they must be aware that worldwide, they stand no chance against Android. So they decided that the top priority will be milking the current customers and loyal fanbase as much as possible. Which is the most rational decision they could make, sadly.
