Another Apple maps fail. Asked Siri to take me to a local car dealership that has been there for at least a decade or more and shock of all shocks, it told me my destination was on the right about 2 miles short of where the place actually is!!!!!!

This software is crap, I had to go through Safari and google maps online to find the real location of the dealership.

I'm so pissed off that this feature was so great on my Android phone but everything else sucked, was awful on my 4S but everything else was great, is no going to suck worse then all iterations before it while hopefully the iphone5 doesn't suck. Navigation is the one thing that I would make a high enough priority to change my mind about a phone.

If my iPhone 5 was not sitting in a Fedex location about an hour from my house right now I would be tempted to cancel and go a different route at this point.

Prove your last comment isn't BS by refusing the shipment tomorrow.

My Apple maps app is telling me that I'm 1.5 miles and 6 minutes away from the chair that I'm sitting in right now. Seems legit.
You must be fat...

In fact, I bet you're so fat that you inspired people to create the "Yo' mama is so fat that she roams in multiple ZIP codes at once" joke... :D

/obviously just poking fun here, nothing against you :)

And now google can control and update the maps app at their own discretion. Better for everyone.
Anything is better than the pile of junk that is Apple Maps.

I hope you're not using Apple Maps to locate your house or that Fedex location. Same thing if you're thinking of "going a different route." With Apple Maps you never know where it's going to get you.

If it is as good as the new YouTube app from google is, I will probably make this my primary map app until Apple sorts everything out.

I live in a major metro and I don't own a car, so the turn by turn Siri stuff means much less to me than public transit and walking directions do.
I wouldn't say that the new YouTube app is "good" (it's one of the only video app that doesn't support AirPlay) but at this point, anything would be better than Apple Maps.

 :apple: people need to stop pissing on Apple Maps.
It was a joke.
Also, people need to stop acting surperior to those who aren't satisfied with a greatly inferior product.

I love Apple. Have for years. Probably since before you started playing with yourself. But come on...this is an inferior product. It's ok to admit it.

I would gladly pay for this too.
Seriously.

Yes, kinda being a jerk there and an obvious apologist.

Why have a maps app with directions if you can't use it to navigate in a strange city in thick traffic?

Unless you are too young to drive, you might understand this point: Some map apps give alternate routes to avoid traffic and don't follow the standard route.

Lol, I'm a 34 year old man who used to read paper maps, so I know how to navigate around unfamiliar cities. I use my Android phone all the time during my US travel (fly every week for work) and occasionally other countries, but I trust it about 60% of the time. The remaining 40%, I'm using my brain to navigate + some common sense, reading signs and paying attention along the way.

Never do I blindly plug in a large international airport and somehow end up 20 miles off course. Ever.

Nice try kiddo.

And get an Android phone if you don't want to miss your flight (if you depend on it for navigation in unfamiliar cities). It will re-route you nicely around traffic and such as a bonus.

Google should even charge a few bucks for it. I'm sure most would pay for it and it would send a strong signal to Apple that it has bitten of its nose to spite its face.

That might make Apple more likely to approve it. Apple would get its 30% cut of all the people who rush to buy it, and could use it to buy pizza for its Maps developers while they are on lockdown.

I hope Apple does approve it. I'll download it, and use it as a backup when and if Apple's Maps don't suffice. But Apple's Maps are the ones that are integrated with iOS.

Even if Apple would approve the Google Maps app quickly it would still have several downsides compared to the way it was before iOS 6

what he said.

This isn't just about some howlers in a turn by turn navigation app (of which there already are several decent standalone choices on iOS), embarrassing graphical glitches etc. its about what constitutes the underlying framework for location services on the entire device.

If that's compromised and can no longer be relied on then neither can the apps who leverage their function from it.

Google maps show my 4 yr old condo but Apple Maps shows the old Wellesley Hospital which was demolished 8 yrs ago...Apple & TomTom should be embrassed.

I don't see why Apple wouldn't approve Google's Maps app...

I mean look at all the options on the App Store. MapQuest (free), TomTom, Waze, etc... there are a whole bunch of map/GPS apps on the store.

For them to reject Google due to "competing with core iOS functionality", they would have to remove ALL of those other map apps to be fair.

And that would anger a lot of people... since those all came BEFORE Apple added navigation.

Honestly, if they don't approve Google's new app, I think there will be a huge backlash from the community and those other companies. It would be a very unwise business decision by Apple.

Jim Dalrymple disagrees

On the rumor that Google has submitted an iOS 6 Maps app and Apple is sitting on it ∞

Additionally, we’ve learned an updated iOS 6 version of the Google Maps.app has been submitted to Apple.

Nope.

I for one won't be installing Google Maps. It's never been a good-enough provider in where I've spent most of my time. Apple Maps works far better for me currently. See my post history for screenshot comparisons.

Amid major criticism of Apple's new Maps app for iOS 6 that replaces the Google-powered app included on the iPhone since 2007, multiple sources are now reporting that Google already has a separate Maps app for iOS ready to go and in fact already submitted to Apple.

The first report comes by way of The Guardian, which says that Google is indeed preparing its own Maps app for iOS 6.The Guardian's report was tweeted by well-connected iOS developer Steve Troughton-Smith, who added a "Yep" to the assertion and framed it as if the app has already been submitted to Apple.

9to5Mac has also weighed in with its own claims that Google has had a standalone version of its Maps app for iOS for a number of years and that an iOS 6-compatible version has indeed been submitted to the App Store.

Finally, TechCrunch is also claiming that a Google app is in the works, with the company aiming to have it available on the App Store "before Christmas". Apple has, however, been known to hold other Google apps in limbo for extended periods of time, so it remains to be seen if and when Google's solution will be available as an alternative to the built-in Maps app from Apple in iOS 6.

Cant apple just work WITH google and add the apple touch to google maps on iOS?
That way we get the best of both worlds?

Sticking with iOS 5 for now

We're looking for a new house at the moment, and Google Street View is a huge help. It has saved hours (days) of time we would have spent in the car exploring new areas and getting a feel for locations surrounding potential properties. My iPad 3 is my primary (non-work) computing device these days. Loosing this functionality at this critical time is not an option. So iOS 6 is unusable for me until Google can restore this functionality for Apple's customers. Apple really dropped the ball on this one.

Steve Jobs would be rolling in his grave.

google already took pics of all the streets, and they are amazing. Why should apple waste money or doing the same, or using less quality ones from tom tom (which I guess is what they are using now).

working with google would save them way more money than building their own from scratch, plus it would be a much better product. It took google what three years to get their maps this good. Do you really want to wait three years for apple maps to catch up to where google maps are today and still be behind in three years?
