google now is creepy. If i'm standing next to a bus stop and launch google now it gives me cards that tell me the bus schedule  clever stuff,

on android it works in your google searches into the cards you see. If you search for attractions or restraunts the next time your out and about and launch google now it will give you cards with suggestions for attractions & restraunts, you can tell it if those were usefull or not etc. pretty sweet

i take it on ios it wont have the ability to play music or launch apps?

Nothing creepy about that. It's location services.

What's creepy is that is KNOWS where the package I ordered on Amazon is -- and even more precise information that what Amazon has! Since when did I give Google the right to sift through my email (Gmail)?? In any case, I have no probs with that, but is it going to throw up ads or the nearest location of porn shops and viagra pills if it pulls that out of my junk mail???

From a corporate perspective, I can definitely see where this is going, and to be honest, it DOES benefit the end-user. Just that if all this information falls into the wrong hands, it can be an end-gamer.

I am happy to see people are understanding (or at least starting to understand) that Google, while free, has costs involved - some fairly significant.

It would appear to many that Google is interested in knowing your location at all times, to hell with your battery.

The amount of data Google is building on so many levels is astounding. Where does it stop? Does it ever stop?

yep if your james bond, a terrorist or planning to commit a crime you need to turn those off.

The thing is your just a number to them. It also allows them to refine search results and give a better service. Apple will have your fingerprint soon lol

ignorance is bliss. for all of us who are educated and understand the compromises made when you get such functionality, there are hundreds of sheep that simply install these apps and use the default settings. its very unnerving to me at least.

i personally have had an iphone for 4 years but i have maybe 3-4 apps installed. i have also 'locked down' my phone as much as i can in a (futile...?) attempt at saving the last sliver of privacy i am dearly holding onto.

Ignorance may be bliss, but being overly paranoid can be a hinderance. I mean, if I had your way of thinking, I wouldn't drive a car or take public transpo because I could get in an accident... the same way I'm SURE someone is just waiting around the corner to steal my identity when my iPhone checks in at the next wi-fi hotspot.

But hey... that's why I don't jailbreak these days...

Interesting - I'd actually say the information is already in the wrong hands.

You just don't realize it yet.

You folks did see that Axciom did a deal with Facebook, right? What on earth might stop Google from doing this? I suspect they already have - remember, Google's product is *you*.

The thick of it
The iOS part of me loves that I can get all these Google services on my iPhone. But the Android side of me hates it. Why should people who've obviously spurned your OS and phones get the same benefits as the people who've chosen to invest in your ecosystem?

If the benefits of what Google provides in this app are important enough to certain people, those people might actually switch platforms for a smoother experience (if they're not already too invested in one system).

For my part, I like the interface and the concept behind Google Now. With devices like the HTC One and the growing number of useful apps, Android now seems like an option to me whereas it wasn't previously. But I also like the design and ease-of-use inherent in Apple devices.

I'll bet that Apple is working on something very similar to Now, and being able to tie Apple's version in with the rest of my iPhone data will be compelling. Maybe we'll know more on June 10....

what sinister things might happen? all i notice is i get adverts for gadgets and bikes instead of womens stuff. I'd rather see that when surfing the web tbh

also if your really protective over your info registering online with anything using your real name is a big risk.

You gave them the right when you started using Gmail for your email...they have been "sifting" through it since day 1. You think they are hosting and providing email services for free out of the kindness of their corporate heart?

Personally, I think it is a fair trade since someone is going to have that information unless I host my own domain and email services myself, and I'm not willing to put in the work for that.

They normally wouldn't use Junk mail to determine anything about you. I've never seen an ad from Google for something they themselves considered Junk mail...

If you go into Settings -> Privacy -> Location Reporting - Learn more, it says this:

... Since Location Reporting has been optimized to use GPS as infrequently as possible, there should be minimal impact on your battery life.

Actually, yes. Open the app, go to settings, then privacy. Turn location reporting off.

When you open the app, location is active. Close the app, wait like 10 seconds and location turns off.

Verified on my iPad and it works as stated.

Perhaps some other app on your iPad is using location services at the same time, because this is definitely not how it works on my iPhone. If you disable that the app no longer uses locations settings at all, while running or in the background.

Which is, I'll grant you, better, as it does at least load unrelated cards at that point.

It comes back after the next weather update. If you want it back you can hit show more cards.

Show more cards has not worked for me. Are you saying it should be back tomorrow? I accidentally swiped away the current location weather card too. I swiped away a few sports cards also, will those come back?

Think in terms of capabilities, not potential actions. Things will become clearer this way.

Agreed. Of course, more and more places have figured that out and are either demanding a real name, or they're using correlation techniques to find out who you are, even if you don't disclose that information directly.

The always on location service usage in the background (even long after the app is closed) is unacceptable.

c. 100,000 BCE: "Fire is dangerous and from the Devil God. Don't use it!"
c. 15,000 BCE: "What is this planting seeds and waiting for them to grow? Farming is for wimps, hunting for men! Not good!"
c. 10,000 BCE: "Why don't you use rocks for cutting? This shiny thing you call metal is bad!"
c. 5,000 BCE: "This making of marks on clay is not acceptable, you call it writing, I call it bad."

& Etc. to the present day. Being afraid of location services is already an old-guy paranoia and will seem utterly Luddite in a few more years.

My concern is battery usage, but I have Carat installed so will be interesting to see if it detects an increased usage over the next few days as more people upgrade and use this.

Nope, it's definitely Google (per Location Services in Settings). And even with the application active, location turns off after a short time as well. So, turning off location services inside the Google application itself keeps it from tracking constantly.

I'm going to do some more testing to see if I can descern a pattern to it enabling location, but for the time being it appears that it's only active for a short time to grab the current location then turns off.

You didn't refute a single argument, this is basically just an ad-hominem

I'm torn on the whole thing.

I don't think so. I will have more confidence if an service is cross platform.
