Google Profits Billions With Motorola Sale To Lenovo, Keeps Patents

Jean-Baptiste said:
Net-net, after the Lenovo deal closes, Google spent less than a billion dollars for patents that it originally estimated was worth $5.5 billion. Admittedly, Motorola also ran up close to $2 billion in operating losses, but that still leaves Google with a $3 billion profit!

Spin, nothing more.

That oft-repeated $5.5 billion "estimate" was before Motogoogle had their patent lawsuits savaged in the courts.

Someone who thinks

$12.5 billion - $3 billion in cash - $2.4 billion to Arris - $2.91 billion = $4.19 billion

Thank you for setting this straight. One of the very few posters in this thread who actually thinks. Amusing, to see how the average MacRumors reader believe they can judge all this so much better than Larry Page et al.

As are the ranks of MR Google defenders. They must be running out of "20% Time" projects in Mountain View.
Not to be let down by MR posters upset about Samsung it is good to see that Google gets the same bizarro treatment.

Actually it is not the same: Samsung "defenders" (as in, anyone not slamming them) are derided as paid-to-post, presumably in some dimly lit basement sweatshop in downtown Seoul.

At least Google "defenders" are mind-numbingly accused of actually working for the company. "Gee, I am making a ton of money at my job but what is better than risking that by creating a phony persona while working to stir up a mac site???"

Gotta love it! :D

just a guess but Oletros complex mathematics made his head hurt

you just made me spit my coffee on my keyboard laughing.

I do agree, upon first glance it makes you go "why are they selling for such a big loss".

but you're right, when you start putting the puzzle pieces together, Google didnt really lose out on this. In fact, They ended up only paying ~3b for an estimated 5.5B worth of patents.

Move on. Drop it. Get back on topic. And keep your comments like that to yourself please.

Back on topic:
I personally am wondering, can Google have more success in the courts with the patents they kept here then they have had in the past. If not then it's a waste of even having them in a way.

There's that imaginary number again...

i dont think you undrestand how valuation works for accounting if you call it an "imaginary number".

I also don't have the time to write textbooks worth of crap that you probably wont read in attempt to say "its imaginary so you're wrong" and stick your fingers in your ear.

I dont know if that is the actual value placed on those patents and the holdings that google is keeping. That is what is being reported.

There's that imaginary number again...

- $3.2B Moto's 2011 cash
- $2.4B Moto's 2011 deferred tax assets
- $2.35B Moto's Set-top-box business sold in 2012
- $75M Moto's factories business sold in 2013
- $2.91B Moto's Mobility business sold in 2014

So the "patents, engineering talent, and insight into the mobile-device marketplace" cost $1.56B, not $7.1B

I do have a nice attitude, my happiness isn't tied to a corporate entity. Work provides the money I need to put food on the table and to provide for my needs. I enjoy my work, but I sure wouldn't be doing the 8-5 daily grind if I didn't have to.
I only want to satisfy my needs? This kind of individual egoism is even worse than national egoism. The people who moan the loss of american jobs at least want their whole community to flourish. We can only build upon what previous generations have left behind for us. If we don't care about the long-term success of the companies we are working at, the next generation will inherit nothing from us.

Feeling that someones life is wasted because the corporation they work for is sold to some other corporation is a really sad outlook. People that tie their happiness to a corporation are the same type that you see flying out a window when things go south.
Quite the opposite. People who only care about their personal wealth jump right out of the window, when they realize they've lost everything that was important to them. All the Money! Nationalists can handle everything as long as the nation survives. And founders, who really care about the company itself, even come back when it is failing to work as interims CEO for the wage of one dollar.

We are all here at MacRumors for the dent Steve Jobs wanted to put in the universe. Not for the hippie he was, who believed one doesn't need to shower, when you stick to a strict fruit diet. Ones work-life is important and shouldn't be wasted.

Keep on twisting my words to meet your agenda.

I firmly believe in benefiting my fellow man and community, you twisting my words when I say I an concerned with my needs is unwarranted.

I don't believe corporations exist for the benefit of humankind. Quite the opposite, corporations exist to benefit themselves and their stockholders by padding their portfolio. I hope we have something better to hand over to future generations other than slavery to some corporation that sees people as nothing more than a number.

Watching Google self-destruct is pretty much the greatest feeling in the world.

Will they smarten up and dump their dumb executive team before they bring down the ENTIRE company, I wonder?

The only way that those posts make sense is being part of just a fictional character, they are such out of reality that they are not even funny.

To those complaining about this: All is fair in love and war (business).

Business is a global phenomenon. Enough with the US vs them, there is no such thing. It's company vs company. Period. "We" don't matter.

There is only those with money, and those without. Capitalism, pure and simple. Sometimes you have to take the good with the bad.

Google was smart to do this from a business standpoint; those who know why are responsible for the stock price going up. Whether or not the treatment and subsequent breakup with Motorola was ethical is another story, entirely. That's the downside of living in an amoral, anyone-can-do-whatever-they-want, get-what-you-can-kind of world. Absolute freedom has its price. This is it.

Apple is unique in the market; its stock price appears to be heavily influenced by the public's (market) perception of the company, regardless of performance. It is what it is.

This events are all very, very interesting to see unfold.

Reviews positive... profit negative.

Apparently Motorola didn't sell enough of those amazing phones.

It doesn't help when they refuse to sell to international customers - someone needs to tap the executive on the shoulder and remind him that there is a whole world beyond the boarders of the United States.

Well said. However, I believe corporations can exist to benefit humankind; profit seeking would be the means for them to continue to do so.

Unfortunately, the problem is people. We are increasingly taught to be independent, to not need each other, to do whatever we want to do without regard to the impact it has on others. We want "freedom" without "law" (ethics). When the sense of what is right and what is wrong becomes an individual thing, inconsistent and lacking incontestable truth, we fall into the moral chaos the world is in.

The behavior of corporations is an extension and a reflection of this. Darwinian ruthlessness in the quest for the mighty, might buck. As such, then, "only the strong survive" is accurate.

It truly is an amazing thing to witness.

Doing the math is a simple application of rules, which doesn't involve any thinking. That's why it can be automated and computerized. Thinking involves much more ahem thinking. :p

The best theory on why Google bought Motorola involves the protection of its core business, which isn't invulnerable. Currently Google is living in a search field within a browser window. So naturally you want to have your own browser or even your own OS build around that browser. But there is much more, that can be turned into a personalized advertising service rivaling web search, people asking their phones or yelling at the television and using social networks. How far is Google+ compared to Facebook? How far is Google Now compared to Siri? How far is Google TV compared to Netflix? How far is Chromecast compared to Apple TV? How far is Chrome OS compared to Windows?

So far Google failed at taking out potential competitors beyond other web search services. Sure it's nice to keep $3bn in cash and a few patents. While this hinders a restart of Motorola, it doesn't help Google with its goals. Now that they are out of the hardware business, they're again dependent on Samsung and Lenovo to offer their services. With Wallet Samsung has its own Passbook clone, rivaling whatever mobile payment or coupon service Google wants to establish. Even based on Android all of Googles services remain easily replaceable.

As Steve said: „We did not enter the search business. They entered the phone business.“ And what they get was independence from a company known to develop its own innovations and dependence on a company known to copy everyone. Its not going well for Google.

I've moved from rather liking Google to actively disliking them, but I wouldn't say that they're self destructing or bringing down the company. They just don't care and they have the market's blessing and more money than they know what to do with, so they're dumping the company now that they're through with it.

The thing that Google has to its advantage that it has already infiltrated so much of people's lives, so even if we dislike their policies it is hard to completely cut them out of our lives.

This whole thread shows how clueless Apple users are about business and finance. This and the Nintendo story thread. It's embarrassing, especially given the 'I hate analysts' circlejerk on here.

Well said.
