It's definitely an important point to consider. We don't want to end up with another Microsoft on our hands. Luckily, I think that precedent has been set, so I think anti-competition watchdogs will keep Apple in check.
I think the watchdogs are triggered by marketshare rather than anti-competitive behavior. Apple's "walled garden" is a ticking timebomb, they have little to fear for the time being but should they one day gain a dominant global market share in the smartphone and/or computer markets, they're in for a bag of hurt.

If anyone is still reading this thread I assume that you feel strongly about this topic.

For those of you who still think that Google is the evil empire, only copies Apple, and aren't innovative, take a look at the keynote from day one (not the one exclusively about Android). For anyone else, take a lot at it anyway :) It's available at http://www.youtube.com/googledevelopers#p/c/02292AD8CFFE1349

If I'm to summarize it (it's quite long), the message is this: Anything you'd have to use native apps for now and in the past (like on the iPhone) you can soon do on the web using Javascript, HTML5, and a number of other technologies (not excluding Flash). Google, Spring, VMWare etc. will provide you with great tools and platforms to do it. Anyone can write these tools as most of it is based on open standards and open source.

If you're a developer, take a look from part 9 and prepare to be wowed. For me, I'm especially excited about the GWT stuff and have been since Google released 2.0 last december.

This keynote encapsulates a lot of what Google is actually doing as opposed to what you might think they're doing. Note that this in no way excludes Apple's devices, and you'll see both Macs and iPads on the stage.

Now that Adobe and Google are buddies facing a common enemy, they could always come up with ways to screw with Apple together... launch new Flash-based must-have services, add Flash-based deluxe features to Google services (Gmail, calendar etc) so that iPad/iPod/iPhone users can only access the basic functionality, give Flash content higher scores in search results so that Apple users will have to plow through an ocean of blue lego pieces before they get to any viewable content...
The latter strategy might be illegal, I don't know. But you are ignoring the fact that Apple tapped in to a long-simmering distaste for Flash that a large number of people share. One of the first add-ons that people write for any new extensible browser is some version of "FlashBlock". There is a reason for that. Google is messing with Apple right now over Flash, but, in the long run, Google knows just as well as anyone else that HTML5 fits with their "open" strategy.

But you are ignoring the fact that Apple tapped in to a long-simmering distaste for Flash that a large number of people share.
Yes, a distaste that's mostly (though not entirely) based on the fact that Flash is associated with annoying ads and pointless intro animations. But they're kidding themselves if they think those things will go away with Flash. Flash doesn't make annoying content, people make annoying content, and people will continue to do so no matter if it's Canvas, Silverlight or Flash delivering it.

I'm confused... did Beethoven invent the piano? Was he the first to ever play a piano? No... and no... but isn't he a household name? A history book name? A legendary name? Yes, yes, and yes.
For some definition of "invent", Beethoven did help invent the modern piano, actually, and was the first person to use it. But, your point is well-taken.

If Google feels that it's plan is so great my question is why do they spend so much time slagging Apple?
Someone with a great idea sells the idea, they don't waste time discussing the competition.
I don't care about Google one way or another but the latest hate rants coming from them are definitely off putting.
Call it what you will but they do have a virtual monopoly on click thru advertising so maybe they should be careful about what they say and do.

Slagging the competition has been the core idea of Apple's advertising for at least a decade. The majority of their TV ads have been about how horrible Windows and PCs supposedly are. Even the OS X system icon for Windows servers mocks the competition (it's a beige CRT monitor with a Blue Screen of Death on it). So you can't really blame Google for stooping to Apple's level. Apple has done this forever, it's a bit too late to cry no fair.

If Google and Apple start talking about each other in their ads, it draws attention away from their real enemy-- Microsoft.

Jeez. what happened?
Does this mean apples going to release an update to block googles web page from my imac?
Sucks, in my opinion Google and apple are two revolutionary software/hardware designers and could have done a lot of good working together.

Lets look at this....

Apple TV - Google TV
Apple did this first. (Google setting sights on Apple)

iTunes - Wireless Android Music Syncing
I don't know how wirlelessly syncing with someone iTunes library is detrimental to Apple in any way. Apple may end up selling MORE music if Android users are able to easily sync with iTunes. (No target either side.)

iAds - Google Ads / Admob
Aem... Google did ads first.... (Apple set sights on Google)

h.264 - WebM/VP8
H.264 is not entirely an Apple product and Google also support and use h.264. (No target either side.) Google's opennes means "Everyone is inclusive" remember! ;)

iPhone OS - Android OS
Google bought Android INC in 2005.. Did no one see Android coming? (Google publicly bought Android INC first)

Sensationalistic article is sensational.

Couldn't agree more

Now, over the years, what I've seen is just a bunch of companies focused on copying things and bringing zero innovation.

When the iPhone came out, the entire industry changed. That is NOT something easy to do. From night to day, Apple was not the "iPod maker" anymore, it was a serious threat to all the mobile makers and all that market segment. From that day to the next years that followed, all I've seen was more and more companies trying to copy that idea, since they all failed to do anything for decades.

I would like to thank:
- Nokia for your crappy phones. Stop suing companies that innovated while you let me in the dark for every time I needed to make a synchronization and not bringing anything really exciting for 10 years;
- Google for trying to dominate the world. Here is a hint, beta programs may save your ass in sues due to not being a "full product" yet, but honestly, it is starting to piss me off. Most of the things that you do don't bring that awesome experience and we fall back to our old applications and computers LOCALLY. Please make SOMETHING really good and stop making TONS of ****** things;
- Microsoft for making the biggest monopoly of office and home users ever seen. Now please, put that money to real development and give us something that YOU came up with. Stop copying Apple's OS in every major aspect of the UI;
- Apple for shaking the grounds of those who thought they had everything already. Please protect your intellectual property and keep innovating. For your devices just one hint: open more APIs and allow more plugins in applications like Safari and devices like Apple TV.

Honestly, it scares the heck out of me to see all the companies copying and trying to shut Apple down. Why? Simple, because Apple was the only company who made a computer I enjoy using and a phone which I had not wished to change after 6 months and they keep doing it.

If it was not for Apple, we could be still typing lines of code in our computers and using that ***** phone with snakes on it.

For 15 years I struggled with stupid products. For the past 3 years I've been enjoying content and not worrying so much about making my computer work without viruses, which phone I should get next since this one is already falling apart and how would I play that movie on my TV.

Honestly, the "kiss" (keep it simple, stupid) still works and very well. Call me silly, call me stupid, but I'm happy, and that is what it counts for me.

For all the companies not creating and just copying, not innovating and just buying, not building and just attacking, please, go f- yourself.

I almost feel sorry for pathetic souls like this.

Why The Face?

Glad Google is doing this... Apple will have to lower the prices since Google is likely to offer most of its products for free, and even some of them open source while Apple is closed source and at prices for Apple customers ;)

Sorry Steve... you cannot fight Google :) Try to come up with decent prices and you might not fail, otehrwise... good luck...

What're you talking about? Google doesn't make the hardware and what they offer as free software is many a times in BETA stage. Also don't expect the app developers for Android to be giving their apps for free. As for the hardware side of things I don't see Motorola, HTC, Samsung lowering their prices. Google looks like they're heading in the same direction as MS, too many variations of hardware for one OS. Let the OS/hardware conflicts begin. As for Google being "open" they seem to be the ones becoming more like Big Brother. Why they're targeting Apple is beyond me, but Google seems to be getting out of hand. They're getting way too big with all these acquisitions and would you let Google store your confidential documents with them?

Online apps never made sense to me as they are glitchy at best and you're at the mercy of servers. You have no control what-so-ever.

I guess you just don't 'get it' then, and that's cool.

I am all for choice and competition! I also have been saying for more than a year that Google is the new Microsoft! I dislike Google more and more everyday for many different reasons!

Google may end up being the dominant player with being "open", but I don't care! Apple will still be a huge player and will offer better products, with better design, UI, and user experiences, PERIOD! :D

P.S. Sucks to be Microsoft now lol! How long you guys think till Steve Ballmer is finally fired??? :p

High quality?

Does apple even use solid state capacitors in all its boards now-a-days? It definitely should at the price premium they are asking. I'm just currious because I can't imagine why someone would call apple hardware great if it is destined for a much shorter life than would be possible with more reliable capacitors.

while I can understand some of you (mostly tech geeks) like Android OS and HTC/Motorola phones, I REALLY CANNOT understand people here defending/supporting Google, the scariest company of the world

Incidentally the Google fanboys are the well known Apple bashers of this forum, so I ask to you: do you hate Apple so much that you can defend a company with no principles like Google ?!? I know Apple is NOT a charity company, they just work to make money, but at least they have a "credo" in the user experience. Did Steve Jobs haunt your nightmares ?!?

Turn it on it's head and ask why Apple fans, who hate Google so much, like to support a company who rips them off, deliberately cripples their products so they can add new features later, etc etc etc. You can't question why Google fans do that without also questioning why Apple fans do exactly the same thing. Just trying to play devils advocate.

Competition is good. It forces everybody to keep on their toes and not get lazy.

Bring it on, I say!

These are two companies I really wish weren't fighting each other. :(

Maybe when Google launches it's Google TV, Apple will finally stop ignoring the Apple TV. Maybe.

I don't know what capacitors Apple, or anybody else, uses these days. I know that it used to be a big issue-- like, 15-20 years ago, when capacitors blew all the time. I can't remember the last time I had a blown capacitor-- maybe 10-12 years ago? They are certainly orders of magnitude more reliable than disk drives.

Double standards much ? Why shouldn't Nokia be allowed to protect its intellectual property ? If not for Nokia's innovation, there wouldn't be an iPhone today.

Seriously, some of you guys need to let go of Steve's tit.

Your statement about Nokia "innovations" is the biggest BS ever seen on this forum ...
Indeed. Thank you, Nokia. Thank you for your crapphones, so Apple did iPhone in a totally different way
