Geez the bezels on that thing are massive. Yuck. Google stock actually trading down so Wall Street must be treating this as 'meh' like they do with most Apple stuff.

A retina mini can't come soon enough.

Wow, that's a thick bezel.

It really is a thick bezel. I very much like Android but haven't yet bought a tablet due the the ugliness of Android tablets. I really thought the new 7 would change all that but I was sadly mistaken.

I might still get this but it's really not an attractive device and doesn't offer much (if anything?) over the iPad. I was also really hoping for an micro SD card slot.

Oh well. At least it's relatively cheap.

I already have an Apple TV so this Chromecast thing is nothing to me, but it looks interesting at least, and for the price, even if it sucks balls, you can write it off without too much of a fuss.

That Nexus 7 is an abomination and those Qualcomm SOC's are always ass when it comes to real world use...with android at least.

I'm getting an iPad Mini for the kids this holiday season, and nothing about the Nexus 7 is swaying me in a different direction. The Nexus 7 also looks cheap and like something from 2 years ago with those massive bezels.

$35 Chormecast is irreverent to me, because it is not available in Canada just yet.

when I realized this I had a dissapoint.

I am looking forward to it. I have a lot of media on my home network. I used Plex for everything. But currently have no "wireless" way of really watching it on all my devices (bedroom TV, living room TV and basement hometheatre projector).

Getting Roku devices or other "smart TV" devices that have the plex app posed a very expensive solution. Apple TV doesn't Support it either. Which meant to power my Televisions with it, I would require several hundred dollars in expense.

Currently I just use my Playbook and directly plug it in via HDMI when i need to, but it means I'm stuck with a hard wired solution with limited length. (Reaching over and hanging half off my couch in the theatre just to navigate it is not very fun option).

but for $35 per TV device, having the capability ot streaming directly from my phone as it's "remote control"... hot damn. its an extremely affordable and robust solution that requires no real wired tethering.

I will likely order a few of these to a friends house in the states and have him ship them up to me.

I have the original N7, and I have to say that I love it. It's great.

Looking forward to the 4.3 update coming out, and then the 5.0 update later this fall.

Competition is grand!

Hope Apple will at least try to match some of the specs in the new Nexus 7 in their next iPad mini.

Not very keen on jumping ship to Android, but I might be tempted if the next iPad mini will still have the same resolution.

Wow. Chromcast. It's as if Google discovered Airplay.

.. and made it 10x better. $35. No wires. No damn remote. Cross-platform. Multitasking capable. And with more developers and content distributors on board (Netflix, Pandora and Songza are the first 3) - this TV accessory can become a serious threat to both cable companies and Apple TV.

I just realized something based on an article that was published before the announcement leaked before the announcement. It looks like all the Chromecast does is stream from the Internet based on a URL. That means you can't actually stream directly from the device. That leaves a big advantage for AirPlay, since you can actually stream directly from the device itself. That may not be true, and there may be a way for the device to load to the Internet and for the Chromecast to immediately download it, but I think people might be disappointed in the performance if that is indeed how the streaming is accomplished.

Anyone able to confirm this is how it works?

i don't usually hook up my tablet with TV. I don't have Apple TV because I don't see usefulness of Apple TV.

I probably will ask my friends in states buy one for me or shop around eBay

From CNET

"As sleek as the Chromecast device looks, Google's initial presentation skimmed over some of the rougher edges. The specs in the Google Play store list both a USB power cable and a power adapter, which indicate that the Chromecast will have some wires hanging off it -- it's not truly "just a stick". It's the same method PLAiR used to power its similar HDMI-based streaming stick."

Also, looking at the stock prices at the current moment, AAPL is up almost 6% and GOOG is down almost 1%. Not sure this new products are really a big deal for Apple.

I guess it really depends on whether you put weight in ecosystems or specs.

I'm in both ecosystems - so the Nexus 7 looks interesting (I still love my Gen 1 iPad - but perhaps thinking of a smaller device). The price is right too.

I'd consider an iPad mini too - but between the 7 and mini - right now I'd probably pick the 7.

Chromecast is what I've wanted for years.

1 simple cheap HDMI plugin that allows any platform to stream to your TV's.

As more apps upgrade to support this it will change the living room as we know it today on any platform.

This dream of everything just working is indeed a dream. You'll see in the reviews that this jack of all trades approach doesn't ever beat the native integration. It'll probably work good with native "Google Experience" Android devices, but no way will this best AirPlay on iOS.

During the announcement they mentioned that they decided to do pretty much the same things they did before on the Nexus 7. Although it's definitely an improvement, I think Apple had it right when they said "you have to be willing to change". The thicker bezel is not looking pretty. And the original iPad, while at its introduction looked gorgeous, it doesn't compare to the new iPad mini bezel design.

It's looking really bad for the Mini now, Apple should push the updated version as soon as they possibly can.

Are you high? What about this makes it "really bad" for the mini now? Other than a retina screen the other stuff is just spec crap that doesn't matter much in the real world. My mini is a dream. Would I like retina? I guess, but that doesn't stop me from using my mini all day long at work and home. And Android is still klunky to use and fugly. I'm not leaving the Apple ecosystem for this thing.

I'll see how chromecast goes but I already have 2 ATVs that work great. Kudos to Google for catching up a bit on Airplay but catching up is not particularly innovation.

Oh yeah, I forgot: Apple is doooomed. :(

yet another piece of tech junk

android doesn't have the apps I need and it handles midi/audio poorly with latency issues that make developers throw up their hands and give up. I use 3 iPads daily and would have 3 more if I could afford them. Unfortunately I need more analogue hardware then I'm buying a supercan macpro. then boobs

Bifurcation of iOS and Android OS

Google Android's paradigm is still windows. An Android tablet app is given various screen sizes upon launching. iOS eliminated this layer.
