I agree that the chromecast thing is pretty cool because a) it's only $35 and b) because it's cross platform.... But I'm surprised people here seem so excited about it because a) you probably are deep in the Apple ecosystem and b) if you were into this sort of thing you probably already have an Apple tv (I do)

The only reason for anyone here to get this is if they have an android phone. This is just catchup.

I hope that now that there is actual competition for the Apple TV, that Apple will FINALLY open the device to Developers and let us utilize the hardware a bit more.

Just ordered a Chromecast. For $35 and 3 months of Netflix, it was a steal. Lots of potential for other apps to support this.

Doesn't do Mirroring.

Can't play games e

Perhaps it can....

You can use the Google Cast SDK to enable your mobile and web apps to cast content to the TV. Chromecast then streams that content directly from the web. Integrating Google Cast technology into your app makes it easier for your users to enjoy their favorite videos, playlists, movies and more on the big screen, without requiring them to download a new application or learn a new interaction model.

Awesome!

This is great. More competition = better products.

It's a win, win for everyone.

3 months of Netflix alone is about $25 or so. You are basically getting this device for about $10.

been pondering the purchase of an apple tv.

Looks like I'll be going with chromecast instead - cheaper and crossplatform

I stream from my nexus 4 to apple TV all the time .. Just search apple TV in play store .. ATV is aesthetically more pleasing IMO :)

Chromecast looks good, as does the tablet. The mini really needs a retina display soon.

As much as I really like google services, I jumped to the nexus4 at launch and found the whole ordering process a disaster.
I won't be ordering anything nexus or google for a very long time.
Although why would you buy appletv over this I will never understand.

They have plenty of retail partners this time round.

Just curious - I assume you mean on Google's website?

Good thing about these new devices - you can buy them on Amazon, Best Buy, etc.

same here. 42 shipped. Now take out the 3 months of netflix ($24) that puts it at REALLY cheap. The neflix deal works one new, existing and prevous accounts. Considering I am paying for neflix right now that is a savings.

You can tell chromecast is already a winner when 90% of macrumors forum posts are saying they are going to get it. I think Apple is late on this one. If Google play it right, they can easily win the TV war with this thing.

According to this zdnet article.
http://www.zdnet.com/why-the-nexus-7-is-winning-my-heart-and-replacing-my-ipad-7000017947/
"Finally, battery life is not shabby, offering me 10 hours of web browsing, and some 300 hours of standby. I'm more than happy with that."

I'd guess he copied what the company claimed.

Google claims "ten hours of web browsing": "Google offers 10 hours of web browsing".

Apple claims "twelve hours of web browsing": "We ran this test, loading page after page after page..."

1920x2000 pixels, 323PPI... that puts Apple in pressure for iPad Mini 2. iPad Mini 2 better gets retina display. Current display is not terrible, but near terrible.

Also, iPad Mini needs get better processor and larger memory. The new Nexus 7 gets quad core, 2GB and NFC...

$35 Chormecast is irreverent to me, because it is not available in Canada just yet.

Seriously Google

I want . . . REALLY WANT to like the iPad competition but . . . .

It's looking really bad for the Mini now, Apple should push the updated version as soon as they possibly can.
