I know a lot of people say ‘just use Safari’ but one of the best and most important features of Chrome for me is multiple accounts and syncing. I have my personal Chrome, business accounts and even my partners account for quick access for her. Rather than having to constantly log out/re login on various websites I can just switch to a different Chrome account without closing or effecting my other account etc.
Firefox Sync works pretty well for that.

Aside from some of the privacy implications, I really have nothing against Chrome. I prefer Safari since I'm fully in the Apple ecosystem and love having Reading List built in. Honestly, the only reason I ever launch another browser is to get 4K YouTube on my iMac. I recently switched from Chrome to Edge for that use case so my browsing is now pretty much YouTube/Netflix/Hulu = Edge, actual browsing = Safari.

Blocking YouTube ads is a moving target. I keep having to change my blocking setup.

Maybe with poor choice of tools. Set once and it's never been an issue for me on desktop with Chrome plus uBlock Origin or Nano adblockers. On mobile, YouTube-Vanced FTW.

Most people don't use ad blockers. For those that do chrome may still be reloading back tabs full pages which doesn't fix the problems outlined in this article. Good effort to appear witty though.

Most people do use adblockers and selectively unblock sites. Why guess when you see for yourself if ads are blocked or hidden with adblocker using Wireshark? Better to be informed than not.

I actually swapped over to Microsoft Edge. I have a 2011 Macbook Pro 15" 16GB ram and 2GHz i7.and it works really good.
It doesnt chew up battery, CPU or Ram. Havent had issues with some pages like Safari does.
Has solid features and its a browser made possible by the Chromium open source project.

Chrome was very slow on my ageing machine but found less errors running some sites. Chrome would zap battery and heat the hardware up and before I knew it fans are running hard.
Safari was ok but load times were average and load site errors on some pages Been using Edge for 12 months and has been a good solid browser and I never thought I would say that.
Came here to say the same. Been very impressed by Edge since the new release. I use it for OneDrive. I may try it for a site that suggests Firefox or Chrome for taking my exams.

This. Chromium Edge puts Chrome to shame. Far less CPU and memory usage and still faster. I never thought I would like a MS browser so much. I'd say it edges out both Firefox and Safari on the Mac, but I still use Safari on my Macs. Hopefully Safari under Big Sur will change that, because the ecosystem integration still beats Edge.

Can we all take a moment to appreciate how great the battle of the desktop web browsers is?

We have Firefox, Chrome, and Safari all battling to be the best web browser AND they all implement the same standards! If only all industries had such effective competition where it was so easy to just swap between competitors!
On desktops/laptops, Chrome market share is 69%. Safari - 4%. Not much of a battle. The same source has MacOS market share at 9.5% which seemingly indicates that less than a half of MacOS users use Safari.

All I use now is Edge ... and I never thought I'd like a Microsoft browser either.

Some business apps require Chrome, and if your company uses GSuite, employees are going to want to use Chrome. My only wish is that we could lockdown the browser and limit the open tabs to about 12. So many employees have two dozen tabs open and complain about "slow laptops". Ugh.
That’s one thing that iOS users don’t have to worry about. A dozen tabs... 🤣

On a 2015 6s btw

Microsoft ripped out a lot of Google's tracking features. I'd imagine that's why it performs better. I'm a fan as well. It's all Chrome, minus the Google bloat.

I use Safari and Firefox equally and have been testing out Brave. I understand Chrome users who are tied into the Google documents and ecosystem, but I really don't understand why some use Chrome that aren't included in that demographic. But, I digress. To each their own...

Firefox wins for me. It’s a solid, full-featured performer—and is a browser built with privacy in mind, rather than the GoogleChromium snoops.

I was bummed when Microsoft revamped Edge using the Chromium base, rather than choosing the Firefox/Mozilla engine. It would have been great for web competition, as now Chromium base is the overwhelming base for browser.

Safari is easily my fallback browser; and I do admit to using Brave mobile for the sole purpose of being my Facebook browser—as I refuse to install Facebook’s battery-vampire app.

Rather than block ads, let’s just limit the resources they use. I see what you did there Google.

I've pretty much decided that when Big Sur comes out I'm ditching Chrome for Safari again. The battery drain was an issue, but privacy is a bigger reason.

We sincerely hope all gods align and Apple does deliver a polished experience with Safari on Big Sur so we can use it professionally. So far, the beta they put out as Tech Preview has been a sad joke.

For everyone using Brave, used to be a decent browser until the privacy smoke wore off.

The rest being mostly Chromium forks do not appeal.

Just switched back to safari. Chrome is a memory hoarder, and I would like to do something else and still use the browser.

I have long ago decided not to use Google. I don't use Android, any of their software and I don't even use google search. I've been using Safari for over a decade and have had no trouble. I also like the new Edge browser and use that at times.

Maybe its my tin hat but why do you guys trust google so much on this macrumors site?

Yeah it is a bit surprising but I can see why people like it, it really is a great browser.

However, for me it's about more than privacy, it's about the future, if Chrome and its Blink engine owns the market the the World Wide Web becomes the Google Wide Web, they will own the standards and the future and that'd be very very bad. They're already strong-arming or ignoring the standards somewhat now.
We effectively have two alternatives now: Safari (webkit) and Firefox. I use Firefox because of sync on all my devices, because of its containers and because I can use several profiles at the same time on my desktop. Safari is great as well for those having it on all their platforms and now with more privacy options and extensions it'll be even better.

Use safari.
If you really need a chromium browser; Use Brave, it's Chrome without the Google spyware.
And the Brave stuff. Which isn't great, because the company behind Brave isn't very trustworthy:
If you really want a Chromium browser without the Google stuff, use Ungoogled Chromium:
Or just use Safari/Firefox if you care about your privacy a lot.

I hardly use Chrome, but I am using the new Microsoft Edge more often. I notice the battery drain issue affects Edge too. What I have done to control battery life on my Mac is to turn off Wi-Fi when I am not using it.
