Anyone know a good app to block AMP pages on iOS? Bonus points if it has a cool dog
There’s a new app that utilizes there Safari extension feature in iOS 15 called Amplosion that does exactly that, and it works wonderfully!

AMP is what made me switch to DDG
yeh, I’ve excised nearly every trace of googles services from my digital experience, but for the fact that Apple still inexplicably requires a non-apple email address to base your Apple account on, so my old unused 15yo gmail account still exists solely for that annoying purpose.

Just got Amplosion. It’s RARE I pay for any app. Super rare. But I’m gladly paying for this one.

Dumb question: Once I enable the extension, do I need to leave the app open, or can I close it and it’ll do its thing in Safari?

You just need to give permissions to the extension. The app doesn't have to stay open.

My account only has my @me, nothing else. It’s possible! I think you need to make an iCloud address, set it as the primary on appleid.apple.com, and then you can remove the secondary gmail. I believe you also need two factor enabled to not have a secondary email on file

So, say there was such an app…. Is it possible that said app could be rendered ineffective by Google at some time in the near future?

I assume the developer would have to be a smart fella, and could deal with it in kind?

I’d sure love to blow up AMP for good!

The AMP spec is pretty straightforward, and having the link to the canonical (AKA normal) webpage in the HTML is a key part of the spec so that it can be found if need be (by Google, screen readers, to allow users to go to it manually, etc.) it would break a lot of websites and likely AMP in general if they changed something like that, so I don't think there's anything to worry about there. :)

You can close it! Force quit if if you want. :p The app does nothing really, just is a viewer for the stats that the Safari extension creates, and has a fun dog. :) And even if you force quit it to be clear the stats will still be ready for you the next time you launch it. The extension is separate and just runs for a second on page load in Safari to bring you to the correct page.

I think Apollo developer has creat.... oh damn, I’m so bad with sarcasm.

Awesome update on Apollo 1.11, eagerly waiting for the Apollo 2 with iPadOS redesing.
Thanks, I can't wait to show it to you. :)

Same. I would still use Google if they offered a “don’t use amp” toggle in my account pages (or any other way to opt out of amp), but they never did… So now, I only use DDG and it’s pretty good for me. I’ll never come back.

No one actually wants Google AMP. Thankfully iOS 15 extensions allow you to disable if permanently.
Please how?? AMP thing is one of the most stupidest things ever, don't like it at all, and also any page viewed on AMP won't go to history, pain.

Can we also fix how YouTube videos now auto play when you simply swipe over them scrolling on a website? Super annoying and I want my data back!
Just use StopTheMadness, it allows you to block AMP, redirects, autoplay, select text on all sites, and a whole lot more. It's the best new iOS 15 extension, it basically fixes all iOS specific browsing annoyances.

StopTheMadness is a Safari extension that stops web sites from making your browser harder to use. And it protects your privacy on the web. StopTheMadness is not an ad blocker: it offers unique features not available from ad blockers or any other apps. StopTheMadness is one of a kind!

Many web sites disable user interface features in Safari that you normally expect to work. StopTheMadness ensures that those features continue to work for you in Safari:

• opening contextual menus

• selecting, copying, cutting, and pasting of text

• drag and drop

• AutoFill/autocomplete of passwords, emails, etc.

With StopTheMadness enabled, the annoying web sites that deliberately make your life harder suddenly become easy to use again!

StopTheMadness also protects your privacy on the web:

• Stops Google AMP (Accelerated Mobile Pages)! Automatically loads the original "canonical" web site page instead of Google AMP.

• Stops hyperlink auditing (anchor "ping").

• Stops tracking beacons (Navigator.sendBeacon).

• Stops clickjacking in Google Search results.

• Stops clickjacking in Gmail.

• Stops clickjacking in Facebook.

• Stops sites from using the Page Visibility API to know when a tab is visible on your screen.

• Removes tracking parameters such as utm_source, gclid, and fbclid from the end of link URLs when clicked in Safari.

• Stops URL shorteners. Checks the links you click in Safari for well-known link shorteners — bit.ly, tinyurl.com, l.facebook.com, t.co, etc. — and loads the unshortened destination URL instead of the shortened URL. This occurs without setting any cookies or other site data, so you can't be tracked by your click.

Bonus Features:

• Stop videos from autoplaying on all web sites.

• Show native video controls. Easily enter Picture-in-Picture from Safari on all web sites!

• Force links to open in the current tab instead of a new tab. Remove target="_blank" from links so that they no longer automatically create a new tab.

• Warns when you paste or type beyond the maximum length in a password field or other text field.

• Stops "Are you sure you want to leave this page?" alerts. Close your tabs without getting stopped by the site!

• Force images to the front. Bypass the transparent overlay on sites that prevents you from dragging and opening the contextual menu on images.

A bug in iOS 15 and iPadOS 15 is preventing Safari from loading AMP links for Google search results, but the issue is not intentional and Google is preparing a fix that's set to be released in the near future.

iOs-15-Safari-Feature.jpg

Developer Jeff Johnson today published a blog post speculating on whether Google had intentionally disabled AMP links for Google search results in Safari on devices running iOS 15 (via MacStories) after he noticed their disappearance.

As he noted, Safari's Google search results do not include AMP links on devices running iOS 15, but AMP content still loads in iOS 14 and in other browsers like Chrome for iOS. Johnson wondered whether Google had decided to disable AMP in iOS 15 due to the prevalence of Safari extensions that feature AMP-blocking features.

That Google search results do not include AMP links in the Safari browser on iOS 15 is a bug, according to Google's public search liaison Danny Sullivan. In a tweet, Sullivan said that Google is working on a fix and that the issue should be resolved soon.

For those unfamiliar with AMP, it stands for "Accelerated Mobile Pages" and it is a feature that's designed to make webpages load faster on mobile devices. AMP pages are cached, allowing them to be presented to users more quickly, but it's something that is not always popular with users because some website features are disabled when AMP is used.

When Google does re-implement AMP links, iOS 15 Safari extensions like Amplosion are available to redirect AMP links to standard webpages.

Bug? I'd say that's a feature.

There should be a new Safari extension that redirects to the website when there's a AMP page. I'd happily pay 5$ for that.

i came to help you both know about Amplosion

and then i saw who wrote the first comment. heh ;)

but yes, to anyone else, Amplosion is a safari extension for iOS/macOS 15 that will redirect AMP links.

AMP is a plague on the open web. As a web developer and designer, we’ve basically been forced by SEO to utilize AMP on some of our sites. Google is using their monopoly here to push their privacy invading garbage. I can’t stand it. It can introduce a ton of bugs and glitchy behavior into sites as well.
