Google to Launch Music Service to Compete Against iTunes?

Curious. Are there android-based music players (not phones) planned? This is more of a threat to MS than to Apple (at this point).

Yup... Apparently Dell is even looking at bringing one to market. Archos already has released one.

I think I might like where this is going with a name like "Google Audio" as opposed to "Google Music" or worse.. "Goo-Tunes" (although that has a neat ring to it). I say this because I download courses from the Teaching Company, which is (generally) and audio based lecture series. Their prices are so high though. I would like someone like Google to take this route alongside any music choices. iTunes does offer a small educational selection, but not like what I can imagine Google offering.

...

I would immediately buy more from google than from itunes if the price of tv episodes was 99 cents rather than the rediculous $3.99 that apple charges. I get network TV through my antenna for free, sure it has advertising and the shows on itunes don't but this is an additional revenue stream for networks so getting anything should make them happy. I will never pay for an episode so if for some reason my PVR doesn't record it I just download from a torrent cause I would pay 99 cents but not 4 bucks

I reckon the world would end if somebody ever hacked google. They know everybody's browsing habits, control our phone calls, our phones, our documents, our e-mail, our social networks, our blogs, our entertainment and now they even get our credit card details! I think I need to buy a bigger tin hat

Bring on the competition. Lower prices for us should be the result. The only thing that worries me is if artists get lured into exclusive contracts with google or iTunes only and their songs are only available in one place.

Google is Evil

It feels like when Microsoft announces any new software package. You know that it will be the de-facto standard since they have the OS market cornered. Google is the same as Microsoft. They use their girth to push into other markets and disrupt the dynamic. These corporations get so big, they ooze away from their strengths. Look for Google Toilet Paper in a supermarket near you!

OK fanbois, why is this negative if it works with my iPhone/iTunes? iTunes isn't and shouldn't be the only music store. We don't even know details on how good or bad the gTunes store would be. Free market tunes please.

all about the Apps

Apple is gradually de-emphasizing music in its business (decline of iPods).
It's all about the Apps now.

So I don't think that Apple is nervous about Google entering the music market.
The "take-over" of native iPhone app's is another thing.

If I had a nickel for every time I heard that . . .

I doubt you will see prices move much on the music. The video on the other hand maybe. Personally, I was always pissed that Apple video could not be burned to DVD and played on my TV. Still waiting for some service to provide cheap TV shows that I can backup and play anywhere.

My cat was starting to look at me suspiciously, so I got her one of these.

Why would someone rate this story negative?

Agree 100%. Why would people down rank this?? Competition is always good for the consumer. I've got no problem with itunes or amazon. (I use them both) I'd love to see another player enter the market.

...

music is going out anyway and video is going to take over...be it music videos downloaded on itunes instead of just the track or other video formats when apples tablet whatever comes out it will be the dawn of the age of video incorporation into all media.

Twice as many negative as positive votes.
Good old apple fanboys: "please don't give us more choice! please don't make apple improve its products/prices to maintain its market share!"

Good for them.,I've stopped buying from iTunes because pretty much everything got a price increase...I think its good for Apple to have competition..watch out Apple, Google could really fly with this one.

I was actually shocked one day when I logged into my Gmail via a different Google login interface (iGoogle or some such) and noticed that in the "my profile" screen it knew not only my email address but my address, phone numbers, and credit card details.

Then I realized I must have used Google Checkout at some point in the past. Then I deleted the credit card details from my profile.

Now, the one thing that Apple does have going for it is international stores. Of all the music stores available to you guys in the States, how many of those (other than iTunes) are available to me in Canada? Not many. If Google is able to bring me alternatives, I'm OK with that...

Haha, oh boy. . Here we go again with the following . . Whatever happened to originality? Everyone wants a piece of someone else's pie. Eat your own, even if all you have is the tip lol. Competitiveness is fine, but all this doing something because someone else who was actually meant for the job did it and is successful at it needs to stop. I can understand wanting to be diverse, especially in the business world but, different people/companies were made for different things. Whatever happened to business being driven by passion? The second that the first iphone was announced, I remember the dude from Google getting on t.v. like a big nervous kid sweating while talking to the press and saying "Oh we are coming out with a platform for phones and it will do this and that" I honestly had to say "so what!" It was like the jealous kid, that didn't want to be left out of the picture on the playground when the truly talented kid does something and everyone naturally goes "wow". Now the other kid wants to fabricate any garbage just to garner attention. All this kiddie business needs to stop. Apple wins all the time because they are driven by passion, end of story.
