I have to disagree here, since the vast majority of cars--even new production models--out there don't have built-in navigation screens, and using your cellphone as a GPS device could result in data downloads counted against your monthly download cap. I wouldn't be surprised that Google's mapping technology is shared with Garmin and TomTom in the near future, though.

I don't know about TomTom, but both Garmin and Navigon use Navitech maps. I find both of them superior to Google for driving instructions.

The point being that non of the major GPS device companies have any need for, or interest in, Google Maps.

Do you know of someone that has said that any GPS device maker needs Gogole Maps?

I don't understand your point, Google doesn't make cartography data, only Navteq and Teleatlas do.

Funny thing is that you really believe this crap

Because it's the truth?

What have been the major "innovations" from Google?

Gmail? Um, mail has been around far longer - Hotmail? Excite? Etc.
Docs? Again, word processing is not an innovative feature.
Google+? Oh, geez - don't make me laugh.
Maps? Map making has been around for thousands of years and online maps is nothing new, either. Mapquest, anyone?

No, is not the truth, your claims are simply crap, is the problem when people only has blind hatred

There isnt a smiley available that says 'are you intentionally being dumb?' but I'd be posting it here if there was.

Gmail - Came out at a time when you had to put up with flashing gif adverts everywhere and storage for around 100 emails from the likes of AOL, Hotmail and Yahoo. Gmail came out with a 1GB email service (which was HUGE at the time, most people were still using floppy disks and CD's to back stuff up).

Docs - The first truly portable, and usable online document service which could be used for free, and would store your docs for free, while at the same time allowing collaboration, obviously acquiring Writely helped greatly here.

Google+ - A fairly new social network, which despite what some people believe, is actually growing at a good pace...I'm guessing you thought Apples attempt at a social network was better... 'Ping'

Maps - At the time when Google Maps launched it was the only half decent map offering. Mapquest didn't start offering satellite based maps until 2006 (a year after Google Maps launched) and still to this day does not provide any form of streetview type maps.

From the sounds of your logic your argument is 'Whats the point in Google maps existing when map quest exists'. If thats your argument you may as well say 'why did Apple bother creating a phone when there were thousands of them around all ready' - thats how stupid we're talking here.

Your whole Google hatred is flawed, Google have created some damn fine stuff, sure they have had their fair share of flops, but what company hasn't? I just find it laughable how narrow minded a select few people can be, you seem to hate something, but dont know why.

It will be interesting to see if the rumored screen shots we saw were google maps or Apples own map data.

At a guess I'd say its Apple's custom 3d layer on top of Google Maps, it seems like the most logical way of working it to provide the absolue best app possible.

That being said, I cant imagine Google would be too happy about it, and would need significant licensing payment, which it looks like Apple isnt willing to pay.

Apple has reportedly been working on a new maps app solution for a long time. Hopefully, it will include voice navigation. Apple has bought a couple of companies to enhance its maps app, noteably, a company specializing in 3-D mapping tech. It will be interesting to see how Google's announcement the week before may affect the Apple keynote. If they discuss in depth, then they consider their map app superior, if it's given a quick presentation, then Google has out maneuvered Apple

Cheers !

Good riddance, Google Maps! In the Chicagoland area, it's wrong most of the time. I lost count of how many times Google Maps routed me to an empty lot or abandoned house instead of the actual business I was requesting.

Good timing by Google. If Apple does annouce something at WWDC, at least now no one will say Google scrambled and "copied" Apple in less than a week. I guess we dodged that bullet.

Or you know... they could stick with Google Maps and dedicate the ressources to another project, making iOS even better.

Why *must* Apple even replace their maps back-end ? Google Maps work. They need to fix the front-end to put in the features that are missing that the back-end already supports (turn-by-turn navigation, etc..).

Because google are probably overcharging for their maps. Also in cartographic terms, google maps are crap.

Technically they are both a software and a hardware company.

Systems. They don't sell you hardware or software, they sell you a system which is made of hardware and software. This was a common occurence in the 70s and early 80s (Atari, Commodore, Apple) and became less popular with the rise of IBM's open PC architecture where the hardware was decoupled from the software.

Still, 90% of Apple's revenue is neither hardware or software sales. It's systems. It's the iPads, iPhones, Macs. All vertically integrated Systems.

Let's stop saying "Apple is a soft/hardware company" and call a duck a duck.

Overcharging to the point where Apple is ready to forgoe tons of features, buy mapping companies and dedicate ressources to work on and data center space to host this new back-end ?

No, I really don't think so Tim. This isn't about price.

Yep, all good innovations. Google took ideas that were out there and made them even better. Just like Apple does. iPod, took the MP3 player to new heights.

Are you mistaking invention with innovation ?

Take a look at C3 & Poly9, Apple's purchases for their mapping technology. They use data collected by aircraft to get their map data. It digitizes land, buildings and even trees. It will have high definition views.

I doubt Google can one-up this technology.

Oh yeah, that technology is amazing. Too bad the maps we'll have hundreds of gigabits of beautiful buildings and 0.001% of Google Maps POI's. It's just pathetic anyone can think Apple can compete with Google Maps. Of course they can make an amazing app, but without Google Maps data that app is useless. That's why Sygic, Navigon, etc. have now Google Local Search.

I've heard that Google has placed restrictions on what Apple can do with Google Maps on iOS (e.g. no guided turn by turn directions). I imagine that Apple has to get into maps if it wants to compete on this front.

apple's not going to ditch google maps unless imaps is better or equal. and they definitely won't allow both. imaps is going to be awesome, and siri is going to do all of the work for you and you will never look back at google maps

People keep repeating that, can we get a source on that one ?

Siri is front-end tech, Google maps is back-end. Nothing would have prevented Apple from using Siri with the Google back-end.

Do you think they will bring turn by turn navigation to ios6? I use the Garmin app but it would be nice to have a more system integrated GPS.

Damn, I guess we can confirmed that Apple really did drop Google Maps from their new iOS.

I can see it now, "Apple copied Google Maps comments."

More than likely the comments here will be that Google copied Apple even though Google Maps existed long before iMaps.

I remember back in the Windows 95 era that Microsoft had some mapping programs, maybe Streets and Trips? Anyone remember that one? And where did they get their map data?

Apple should give us the best maps in iOS, regardless of provider. If that's Google now then okay. If Apple wants to move away from Google eventually and do their own maps that's okay too. I just do not want an Apple "beta" map product in iOS just so Apple can spite Google.

So true! word!

I'm sure that Steve thought of this way before Microsoft did. Probably about the time he thought of a laptop that was shaped like a rectangle. I mean nobody ever innovated except Apple. Right? :D :D:D
