Are you implying that horizontally scrolling images of the movie covers on a widescreen display is Apple innovation now? That's basically the common theme there.
Guess Netflix also ripped Apple off with their PS3 app. ;)

And yet, I bet it will still ship with a remote control with hundreds of buttons on it and the networks will all still prevent streaming of content to it.

Actually, 1000's of buttons...to make it all the more confusing to use.

When Apple releases their version, it has to be a totally new concept, not just voice activation, but much more. And they somehow have to get the major cable players to behave or this will be a dead end.

I didn't realise you could by television sets with an Apple TV built in. Could you enlighten me as to when this change happened?

Hey genius, why would I need that when I have a $99 apple tv with much greater functionality that works beautifully in tandem with my iPhone? My iPhone can control the device, as well as stream content on iPhone directly through the ATV to my TV. If the Apple TV breaks, I can easily replace. And if it were IN THE TV, I would need to take the whole TV in for service or replace the TV. Lastly, if there is a significant hardware / model upgrade I replace a $99 device, not my whole frk'n TV. This is a no brainer.

You know, if I dollar every time someone said X copied Y on an Apple forum, I'd spend my newly acquired riches on plane tickets, so I could fly out to these peoples houses, and punch them in the arm. And by punch, I mean one of those punches you throw with a knuckle out. Those hurt really bad.

Then I would say "Shut up. You're dumb"

Then I would walk away.

And it would be worth it.

Great way to see the world, at the very least.

Google TV comes built in some TV's, but it also comes as a stand alone device that you can hook to your TV as well. There's an App that can control Google TV. It's for Android and iPhone!

Here's the standalone Google TV: http://www.logitech.com/en-us/smartTV/revue

Could Apple bypass the US cable operators and internet TV problems by going down the satellite route? Add a satellite receiver integrated into any Apple TV and you get access to all the channels you want in good quality. Add sat broadband for iCloud streaming, iTunes rentals, internet streaming (eg sports results) and away you go. One Apple Television, one remote, no boxes. I don't know about the US but in the UK sat tv is more popular than cable tv.

Are satellites public domain? In short, as long as someone owns the infrastructure and has vested interest in staying in control, the answer is no.

Granted, Apple could launch its own satellites, just like it could dig its own cable. Both comes with a hefty price tag, however (and neither deal with the co-dependencies between production companies and cable companies).

You know, I was talking about the user interface, but OK.

Google managed to copy the color scheme and layout down to a "T" but they still managed to make it uglier.

Google TV:

no similarity what so ever.

OMG THEY ALL COPIEDZ WINDOWS 8.

(Or: everything you just showed are iterations of things that have been done since the dawn of time. Jesus.

----------

Actually, considering these interfaces are from PBS's devs and Netflix, no, I'm not implying anything about Apple. Incredibly, they don't write all the apps on their devices. I AM, however, implying that it's interesting that the left panel is VERY familiar-looking, as well as the specific breakdown of categories and identical glowing blue box just like the Netflix interface. At least they don't have a "Donate" button in the upper right corner. After WebOS, Mango, and MeeGo (hell, even the Xbox dashboard), I really REALLY don't want to hear more nonsense from Google fans about how "there's only one way to do it."

And pretty much either way they did it (or 99% of useful solutions) would have prior art. If one is a copy, they all are.

----------

So it bothers you when Google does the same overall interface as everyone else, but not when all the other developers used it? I'm seriously confused. Does it bother you that Chrome has the address bar at the top, too?

Im sure he is, its blatantly derivative and obviously IP-theft.

Finally! I am so glad that I grabbed one SONY 46 for 599.99 pre-tax in Sep. when it was on sale in Frys

NICE! I picked one up earlier this year for $700 via Sony's Employee pricing and love it! I'm an apple fan boy but can appreciate the potential of Google TV. Just today I noticed that HBO GO can be accessed via the browser -- we have Netflix streaming which is a nice combo.

Yea, shame on me. Go do a search on Amazon...
I just did. What are you talking about — you mean how the Logitech Revue is #1 in Digital Media Devices (which doesn't include the Apple TV), or #5 in Television & Video (to the Apple TV's #8 rank)?

Yeah, unfortunately for you, looking at subcatgories doesn't tell you the whole picture; those only register sales for that specific category. Let's look at the bigger picture. Since we can't look past the top ten in all of Amazon, the next biggest category is Electronics.

And, oh hey, look — Apple TV is #14 in Electronics sales.

Roku devices come in at #21, #34, and #40… and the Logitech Revue is nowhere to be seen. Weird.

It must be a glitch.

Must be since the Revue, Roku devices and Boxee Box are all in the same categories but the current generation Apple TV is nowhere to be found. I'm curious on how Amazon classifies the Apple TV. The older generation Apple TV devices ARE listed with those three and are understandably well, well behind. ;)

Oh, and:

While the Amazon Best Sellers list is a good indicator of how well a product is selling overall, it doesn't always indicate how well an item is selling among other similar items. Category and subcategory best seller lists were created to highlight an item's rank in the categories or subcategories where it really stands out. We choose a few of the most popular subcategories in which the item has a high ranking in relation to other items in that subcategory, and showcase the item's rank on the product page. As with the main Amazon Best Sellers list, these category rankings are based on Amazon.com sales and are updated hourly.

Aren't those boxes like $100? I might get one. Just for a browser on my tv. Or maybe the boxee box. I already have an apple tv and honestly, it's not good for any more than Netflix to a regular joe like me.

For the UK market, Apple needs to do a deal with either Sky or Virgin Media.

We also have FreeView and FreeSat with no subscription, yet you still need to pay a TV licence for any of these services if you wish to watch live TV.

These two companies, Sky and Virgin have such a massive user base that yet another service is just going to go nowhere really.

To be fair, that's just Logitech's box, and it was at their old price point of 199$. They lowered the price now to 99$ and GoogleTV is much more than just the Revue, it also comes included on many TV sets.

So, maybe you want to try a bit of that honesty yourself. ;)

I don't know what Google thinks its doing and I don't care. They don't make consumer hardware products and never will, despite what they make think they do.

Right now, all I care about in the TV space is one thing...

....where the hell is the A5-powered, 1080p capable AppleTV?????????

Apple sells me an iPad 2 with native 1080p "handling". Then they finally catch up to desire, and sell me an iPhone with 1080p video recording/handling.

Since I have an HDTV made sometime in the last decade, that is also 1080p capable.

Oh, and AirPlay is the greatest thing since sliced bread, right Apple?

"Hey everyone, gather around the big screen, I just shot some awesome footage today...." Proceeds to AirPlay 1080p footage to a 1080p screen..........at 720p.

Apple fail.

Pretty much. I doubt many of the people who are on this futile crusade to crush Google have used an Android phone.

Just going back to the Apple TV, IF they did launch a TV, no doubt at the high end market price bracket, is it going to have glasses free HD 3D from any angle? Or even 3D with glasses? If not then it will already be old technology no matter what interface it has.

It will probably be unlike anything you or I thought it would be. And it would be quite different from Google's or MS' implementations. Apple wouldn't dare put out the sort of crap they do.

Best thing to do is drop all the predictions (they're probably wrong anyway), let go of all your misconceptions, and just sit back and watch Apple do their thing.

Ok, I'll 'ignore' the fact the entire TV industry is working on glasses free HD 3D from all angles and 'ignore' Jobs own animation studio has a vested interest in 3D films and 'assume' that because LTD has brain washed me to believe that Apple are going to 're-invent' the TV because we all ONLY need one size, and we ALL only need Siri to control it!! We also ALL ONLY need to pay Apple for our TV services
You talk, often, way more crap mate then what TV manufacturers make!

It's actually very easy to predict what Apple TV set would look like: no 3D (not that I care) and useless 2 button remote control with Siri (good luck with trying to change volume level :D)
