I am actually excited about these news, not because I will download the app, but because I think it will make Apple start updating the imessage app with more features =D
They were not aiming at personal informations specifically, they were simply collecting whatever data was transmitted. Since running cars around the whole World is kinda expensive it makes sense to collect as much as you can to avoid the need for multiple trips. Sadly many still leave their WiFi connections unencrypted, which means Google ended up harvesting a lot of personal informations too.Hoovering open wifi personal data was a good idea?

Trying was a good idea, after all it was unencrypted information and the expectation of privacy about them was not clear at all, Google argued the information was being made public and it's not a big stretch of imagination thinking it could be a correct interpretation. Ultimately it was decided Google was wrong so they had to discard these personal informations and pay a fine, but in the end the legit informations collected far outweight these problems.
Yep, totally agree. Apple should open their iMessage and Facetime protocol so it can be integrated in Hangouts/G+. That'd be awesome. Maybe even in Facebook. But that's even more unrealistic. Can you contact everyone at oncce on Facebook-GooglePlus-iMessage-BBM-Hangouts? Hmmm...no?
Can you contact everyone at once using e-mail? Yup
I use some of these services often. They're fairly useful. But until someone addresses that issue none of them will ever come close to being essential.

You can think these snippets are useless only to find out they are actually useful later on, which means you need to re-do your data collection again. It's much smarter to simply collect everything available and sort out the possibilities later on, which was Google's approach. No, they didn't need to collect those snippets because they are useless. The only thing that they had to collect is SSID, MAC address and location, nothing more.
so is that just for iOS? can't find it in the mac app store
Or get T-Mobile and keep your SMS for free
Hmm, my brother once had T-Mobile but he left so I think I'll stay put. A lot people complain about AT&T but I've had no issues with them.
but then again it's your own fault if your WiFI is unsecured..
It's unfortunate that that's the case, but yes. Google shouldn't be stealing info from unsecured networks, and those networks shouldn't have been unsecured in the first place. It's both/and, not either/or.Yes, and if someone steals my TV I'm to blame for leaving the door unlocked.
Apparently Google gets a pass no matter what they do. We will all be sorry for this someday.

Yeah well go and get your tin foil hat. And as I already said, they have been punished globally for recording the WiFI data. But seriously, your going to sit there and proclaim that having an unprotected WiFi is perfectly fine and damn Google for getting your information? You deserve to be hacked if you think like that.
1) I don't have unprotected wifi.
2) If I did, I shouldn't have to worry about an upstanding corporation with the motto "Do No Evil" driving around my neighborhood in special cars sucking up as much of my personal data as they can get.
Paranoia can be a good thing. Mock all you want, but Google is getting far more power than anyone should be comfortable with.
Google is the last company I worry about.
As long as you have a Google+ account you should be good to go, and if I recall, our Biz Account had it automatically enabled as soon as I setup my G+ Our team (on the same Biz Account) was already a group that could be selected during a Hangout.
