Another chat app? No, thank you i already have too many(whatsapp, ym, line, viber, tango, fb msgr, skype)

Awesome free updates from Google today, and what do ya know, some of it's free for iOS users too! My God, Google doing something for everyone, imagine if Apple wasn't so closed.....

Loving the new photo options, the control you can have is also good. A lot of cleaned up interfaces that certainly have a Google flare to them. But the cross platform functionalities is just awesome.

Nice, i like it. Coming back to iOS from Android i missed things like maps and direct gmail chats. Even though maps isn't totally inbuilt into iOS, i like that google keeps updating their apps for iphone. I needed a gtalk app to chat to my brother, and i lot of them i tried didn't work, so the hangouts is a good move. Works well, although it does seem to keep saying theres no network connection even though im on 3g and wifi, plus it did send a test chat. Perhaps a bit buggy, but i'll see.

Your chart forgot one important data point:

Google: Drives around in special cars that take pictures of your house while vacuuming up personal data from open wifi networks.

And you can also request Google to remove your house from that street view etc! Can you have you house removed from Apple's fly over??
Oh and courts around the world have demanded they delete all the information they picked up on WiFi's but then again it's your own fault if your WiFI is unsecured..

Don't understand this app. I have 200 ppl in my contact list but only 15 ppl show up on this app. Is that the ppl that have google accounts? I also texted my GF who is 1 of the 15 but she didn't get a text message. Does she need to install the app also? If so this app is useless.

Exactly. What I'm doing to avoid these fees is ask AT&T to deactivate all incoming/outgoing SMS. I then use iMessage and Google Voice to text with all my friends. Pretty straight forward; if people who don't have an iOS device really want to text me, they'll use my Google number...I don't think it's too much to ask for.
Or get T-Mobile and keep your SMS for free

Yes, this app has nothing to go with SMS on iOS or Android.

this is pretty neat for all my friends on android actually. maybe i can finally text them from my mac without using my iphone all the time to answer.

if only whatsapp would make a computer app

Whatsapp won't even make an iPad app.

I thought it was a SMS chat client that unified everyone. Was actually hoping it was someone was going to tell me a fix...oh well i'll just delete it. Didn't know so many ppl don't have google accounts.

That's what the rumors made it out to be. In practice Facebook seems to have done a much better job making an integrated chat client (on Android, at least). The Facebook Messenger SMS support is up the with iMessage. Hangouts just seems like an ugly Google Talk client with video sumpport (that's still more reliable than FaceTime for me) and nothing more.

After signing in, the app just pops up a screen telling you to "start a hangout", when you cancel it, there is only an empty window. I think Google could've learn more from the interface of Whatsapp...

Its a blend of SMS, im, and group chat. It's much more useful for me since all my friends use gchat and now I can pick up those conversations on web, phone or ipad.

that wasnt the question.

i trust apple w/ my data more so than google, because apple isnt an ad company that makes its money mining my personal details and using it for targeting ads. nor has apple been found guilty of violating privacy in multiple countries.

So you must really not trust FOX, Wall Street Journal, ABC, NY Times, or any other newspaper or TV studio, because, by your strange logic, they're fundamentally advertising companies because that's how they generate the majority of their revenue.

Google is a tech company that sells ads so it can operate it's business. Just like the the Wall Street Journal is a newspaper company that sells advertisements to fund it's business.

Guess which field Apple is trying to get into? And guess who gets in trouble all the time? Or has issues surrounding privacyhere and there and everywhere?

And you say the haven't gotten in trouble, but they're on the verge here..

Bottom line, wear a tinfoil hat and trust no one. Or take a risk, enjoy your life, and hope these multinational companies do everything they can to stop your identity and personal information from getting out to the wrong people.
