Can the iPhone do real time translation through the AirPods right now?
why do i need to use my airpods? i just say "hey siri say hello in french" and the phone says "hello", in french, out loud on the speaker. why do i need the airpods to do anything?

Yes, exactly. Google can keep everyone in their own little "walled garden." Apple's business model clearly works. Why wouldn't Google want to emulate it a little?
i think this is why apple works well this concept and google will too.

A bunch of hey, look at us products that are inferior to Apple. Almost Samesung level copying. After all, they are an ad company and only sell products to capture more user info.

Apple was never worried anyways, but they can relax. Have to say the Pixel 2's looked terrible and low end. Black fronts on white or that Verizon only awful light gray blue for the basic 2's or that black glass window on the back of the white 2 XL plus the black front are all things you would expect on a Nexus - cause you were paying $400 and a half baked product design was sometimes par for the course.

But these are at s8, iPhone prices...and it looks like they put out Google's Nexus team's mockups by mistake. At least on looks, last years Pixels were much more polished and refined looking - and last years blue was something people wanted. Google won't have nearly the demand issues for the 2's. If I was over in Android land, I'd be more tempted by the other vendors and wouldn't consider these - other than black, they're ugly.

Google doesn't have to do that, right?
yes it does - it needs the phone to do the interpreting and it needs the phones speaker to voice the response. These aren't a star trek com badge that can do the interpreting and voicing - all they're doing is relaying what your voicing to the phone and its doing the interpreting and voicing - same as iphone.

Giving up privacy for saving ~10 bucks a month? Not today, not for me.
This is just hyperbole. You're not giving up your privacy, it's not like your email or photos are being published out there or even looked at by anyone. And I mean anyone, not even Google's staff can actually look at your data (sackable offence).

You can opt-out of personalised advertising too.

And no, Google doesn't sell your data.

I have it enabled on all my Android devices I’ve ever used, and please don’t tell me all of them have permission issues (and I can bet I have used more Android devices than most people here, being an Android user since the Nexus One).

I can say Google’s voice recognition is very good, considering I’ve used google voice even before it was bought by google. But in reality, the usefulness is not there. Google assistant cannot even take direction to my friends house no matter how hard I try. But if it’s a commmercial location like a shopping mall or hotel, bam it works instantly. Gee, such selective AI.
It works really well for me. I also use Inbox and I get automatic flights/hotel reservations/appointment recognition/etc. All the stuff appears in Google Now too. Highly useful.

I'm not a fan of the notch, but this two tone back that looks like plastic is no bueno.

The back of the phone is going to end up in a case five minutes after its opened for most people, so who cares. The notch on the front is going to be staring you in the face every second you use it. I think the notch was a gimmick to let Apple claim a larger screen size. It would have been nicer to just give it a bezel at the top to make that notch disappear.

I don't know anyone that is happy about Google removing the headphone jack. Literally the only reason is to sell their Pixel Buds thats it. Apple's excuse was for battery life + force touch. Google doesn't have the same excuse. Part of the Pixel 1's marketing was that they had a headphone jack. Now they take it away. I think a lot of people are dumbfounded at this move. And no its not for waterproofing either - the Xperia / Galaxy are IP68 while having a headphone jack.

I'm happy with the Note 8 I bought this past weekend after seeing the Google keynote. Looks like all the energy is in keeping the minor camera lead and making more of Google Assistant integration. No headphone jack was one of my dislikes of the iPhone and why I stayed at the 6s+. The bottom line is unless they get some deals with all the carriers, this thing isn't going to sell many copies anyways. It was kind of funny that at the beginning of the announcement they talked about how great the first Pixel was and then joked about how few they sold. Not a great way to kick off things.

Its still primarily a two horse race for smartphone king... Apple and Samsung. Everyone else is niche players.

They didn't do that during the presentation.

The airpods do real-time language conversation conversion?

Cool!

Two very different product for the same price. Yeah, wire, but the AI tech is beyond innovative.

they're not very different. buds themselves don't contain much hardware for the language conversion. most of that is software.

the only thing i can see is that they probably have a second mic pointing outwards to listen further than the user.

i'm sure if apple really wanted to, they can have the user take out one airpod and use it as a microphone for the other speaker, integrate some siri translation. totally possible, but unlikely to be implemented by Apple.

I like my headphone jack but at least Google's solution is to support AptX, HD-AptX and LDAC on Bluetooth.

Apple's was to embrace and extend with a new solution which you had to buy anew from them. I'd hate them too.

google's solution isn't that great. bluetooth pairing sucks. needs something smarter. right now my QC35 bluetooth headphones has trouble detecting which device i want to hear from and i have to launch their stupid app to prevent the headphones from pairing with my macbook. really annoying.

i can always switch devices with my airpods with one or two taps/clicks. absolutely a breeze to do.
