While it's not a part of RCS standard (yet?), encryption can be enabled through the app as Google has done with their Messages app.

and it's being tested for group chats

Very well... whenever GSM implemented and enforced the e2e encryption into RCS, then probably apple should consider it but till then it would destroy iMessage it both security and privacy and I hope apple wouldn't be forced into it...

It is bad for the consumer when large corporations like Apple refuse such a simple fix in the name of profits. Do I blame them? I can't say that I do, it makes sense that Apple doesn't have any interest in fixing texting. But at the same time, I can't get behind something that ultimately only hurts the consumer, and this does.

Texting iOS to Android is horrible but it doesn't have to be that way, and it shouldn't.
Fix? Horrible? You must be a joy.

RCS is security issue waiting to happen.

And this is why Apple never implemented, and never will. iMessage is still super encrypted and is the gold standard for encrypted messaging.
Thanks for the article. Super helpful!

Everybody I speak with uses whatapp. So that is what I use.

The difference is that WhatsApp requires an internet (or data) connection. Those that turn off data won't be able to use WhatsApp. That's where iMessage becomes elegant, because it falls back to SMS to ensure message delivery. Does RCS, or are users stuck with an unsent message?

Yes its in the price tag of the iphone do you think servers are free?

So don't buy an iPhone? It's plainly obvious that this is Apple's business model, and it's a perfectly valid one. iMessage is one of the perks of having an iPhone, hence why Apple is guarding it.

I, too, wish that cross-device mobile messaging was a bit more balanced. RCS is trying to level the playing field, but they can't until they offer a specification that's not two steps backwards in terms of privacy and security.

Tim Cook won't change. When Timmy digs in his heels, no one can change his mind. I like the encryption of iMessage though. I don't want others to see my wife asking if I want to hit the gym today. That would be catastrophic.

... Apple doesn't have any interest in fixing texting.

It doesn't need "fixing." It works fine. If you're saying that Apple isn't interested in changing iMessage to become the same kind of text app that some other company uses, then I'd agree. They're also not interested in turning their Macbooks into Chromebooks, or their iPads into Microsoft Surface tablets.

What they make works, and this is just Google complaining that not everyone wants to be Googlefied.

I think Apple should release iMessages for Android.
From a business perspective it would hurt Apple and benefit Google.

In my rather late extended family there are probably a number people who have been kept from defecting to Android, because they didn’t want to be excluded from the family iMessage group. Good! They’ve been saved from Google’s privacy-sucking practices in the process.
