It is bad for the consumer when large corporations like Apple refuse such a simple fix in the name of profits.

RCS is a terrible standard that was effectively dead until Google resurrected it for their 18th attempt at a Chat product.

My understanding - most of the carrier RCS deployments are actually Google's cloud-hosted RCS product.

That means that there is a lot of strategic information leaked from adding RCS support.

Pretty fundamental features for a modern chat app like end-to-end encryption are actually not in the standard, but proprietary extensions by Google.

Do I blame them? I can't say that I do, it makes sense that Apple doesn't have any interest in fixing texting.

There's no reason Google couldn't release an RCS app. The problem is that this is their power play to be relevant for chat, and since they aren't relevant nobody would give enough of a crap to install Google's app.

Texting iOS to Android is horrible but it doesn't have to be that way, and it shouldn't.

The absolute best case scenario for an RCS implementation internal to iOS is an experience that is still sub-par to either iMessage or Google Chat. That is because Google already has established that they will add features beyond RCS to their own chat app, just like iMessage has a lot of features that would not work cross-platform using stock RCS.

The solution most of the world has taken for horrible cellular texting technology (including RCS) is to not use it, but to use another app. On one hand it sucks to have a half dozen chat apps, but the protocols are pretty fundamentally incompatible because they were designed to solve different goals.

RCS is security issue waiting to happen.

And this is why Apple never implemented, and never will. iMessage is still super encrypted and is the gold standard for encrypted messaging.
It's good... But it's certainly not the gold standard. That crown is pretty well held by signal.
iMessage is also closed source, so we have now way of knowing if apple decides to build in a backdoor.

What?!

Let’s first look through historical implementation for once shall we?!

SMS and MMS was the telco deflacto standard since GSM/CDMA for cell services globally!

Many TDMA/CDMA carriers that evolved into 3G had to use hardware upgrade paths brining them to WCDMA/3G and by doing so RIPPED apart standard GSM services that were completely FREE to end users of feature phones and early generation smartphones!! Either to bill per use services or to remove functionality with switch access.

Next Apple created iMessage a true innovation!!

iMessage does NOT in ANY damn way break text to non Apple smartphones or feature phones. PERIOD! Stop gaslighting.

So you dislike “Rick sent a like to your message” you STILL get the point! You’re simply reading it as a text - which you claim is broken but predates PCS by over 7yrs!

This is just like Lightning Cable debuting USB-C prior yet EU is forcing Apple to change over a damn cable interface?! Seriously?! How is it affecting android phone users?! See the similarities here?!

So does PCS offer Android users to message (text, emoticons, pictures, share contacts, or data from apps) to other PCS android phones without being activated or being suspended on mobile network or without a SIM/eSIM card strictly over Wi-Fi?!

If NOT then PCS is NOT as advance and I care nothing for it! I cannot tell you just how many times during a crap job living paycheque to paycheque where my pay as you go phone bill was deplorares and I needed to top up yet couldn’t sue to the pay schedule and STILL was able to communicate with my family or with work shift changes over Wi-Fi. Even I was able to make iPhone to iPhone calls!

Where was ALL this BS whining when BlackBerryOS/BB10/Blackberry for Android used their proprietary BBM messaging or PIN to PIN messaging?!

I know of a former BNSF employee that had a MAJOR accident working as a train gang and had a train rolll over his leg just above his knee!! Just befor his gang member (train gang) helped him he was able to use BBM messaging to immediately and in real time alert his higher up and his wife simultaneously before passing out!

I fielded the support call on why his higher up didn’t get the PIN message at that time (new BB9700 was NOT registered on BES for data at that moment yet was later in the day).

This man messaged his wife as train gang members usually are away from home for 1-3 months and if they don’t return home to their super wives it isn’t the dog house they end up dealing with!

Effective real time communications that are RELIABLE and proven is what I use! so can PCS offer this Google?! Or just pushing a narrative?!

That's the real motive here. Google needs Apple to support RCS so Google can better compete with these 3rd party messenger apps. They want to be in control of messaging just like Apple has achieved.

However, It is annoying that often sending a photo to Android just fails and I have to ask for a different method or upload to a link. I think Apple should support RCS just to make the experience better for iPhone users. Make their bubbles an even uglier color if need be. Puke green? 🤮

The issue is not Android failing to receive the photo!

That’s the end users setting in their version of Android OS or needing a security patch update OR that the end recipient is using a free garbage Text Apl like TextNow or TextMe etc.

The issue isn’t the sender as iMessage still can default to industry carrier standard MMS!

Apple talks a lot about Privacy as a differentiator for their devices. They should live up to it and start messaging through RCS when the other person is using it on their end.
Why? RCS by default is not encrypted. Google’s version is when it goes through their servers. Fact is RCS is not an SMS replacement as it still requires an internet connection. Google stuffed messaging up. Apple didn’t.

I can't help but wonder had Apple designed iMessage to play nicer with other platforms in the beginning that iMessage usage would be greater in other countries instead of WeChat, WhatsApp, Telegram, and Facebook Messanger

I doubt it. iMessages is one of those things keeping US users more attached to the platform. It is quite obvious that Apple are not interesting in cross-platform expansion, if we check their main products (Apple Maps, Apple Music, FaceTime, Pages, Numbers, etc.) all work better or in a more seamless way across Apple devices. Have you tried sending a non-Apple user a link to a FaceTime call? On my tests it proved awful. Apple Maps do not have a web-based version, not to mention a dedicated Android app.

As far as messages in general go, in Europe people use whatever (WhatsApp, Signal, Telegram, Viber, FB Messenger and some other odd ones). As they are all free and cross-platform, it is as simple as installing yet another app to “keep in touch”.

Why does Google care whether Apple adopts RCS or not? Apple made FaceTime open source and nobody adopted it.

How do we know that there isn't some other reason that Apple is reluctant to adopt that standard (like security)?

I'd rather have standard (limited) SMS messages with the handful of android users that I text than open my phone to the RCS protocols. A quick search shows lots of articles explaining its security issues.
SMS is way less secure than RCS though.

In the beginning, there was only iPhone.
WhatsApp pre-dates iMessage though.

Apple wont implement RCS because they will want consumers to use Apple devices to communicate with one another, they do not want consumers using android mobile phones to talk to their Apple customers. In Apple's mind, if you want 'flawless' messaging, consumers need to go Apple to Apple and not Apple to Android. Basically meaning Apple want android owners to ditch their android phone and purchase an Apple one.

RCS is security issue waiting to happen.

And this is why Apple never implemented, and never will. iMessage is still super encrypted and is the gold standard for encrypted messaging.

And not using RCS is a privacy issue already in the open. One you can fix, the only is unavoidable.
Seems like an obvious choice to me.

iPhone Pro users and iPhone users in general do not want USB-C and that bag of confusing charging and data standard junk.

We want thunderbolt 3/4 ;)
I DO want USB-C. I'm tired of having to carry around Lightning cables when everything else I have uses USB-C.

Thunderbolt is overkill for charging a keyboard, mouse, and even most use-cases for an iPhone.

Google is continuing on with its #GetTheMessage campaign attempting to convince Apple to adopt the RCS messaging protocol, this time taking out a large New Year's-themed ad at Harmon Corner in Las Vegas.

apple-android-rcs-ad.jpg

The digital billboard urges Apple not to "drop the ball" on fixing its "pixelated photos and videos."After the short message, the billboard scrolls through RCS code, ending with a plea to customers to "Help Apple #GetTheMessage," the hashtag that Google has been using for the campaign.

Google launched the "Get the Message" push back in August with a full website highlighting the benefits of RCS, which include support for higher resolution photos and videos, audio messages, and bigger file sizes, along with improved encryption, cross-platform emoji reactions, and more reliable group chats across different devices.

Google has been pestering Apple to adopt RCS for well over a year through the website, pleas on Twitter, billboards, and more, but Apple has made no acknowledgement of Google's efforts. In fact, Apple CEO Tim Cook recently said that RCS is not a priority. "I don't hear our users asking that we put a lot of energy in on that at this point," said Cook.

All major mobile carriers and manufacturers have implemented RCS support, including AT&T, Verizon, T-Mobile, Motorola, Nokia, OnePlus, Samsung, Sony, and others, with Apple remaining the lone holdout.

Exactly. More people use Whatsapp than IMessage so Apple have lost out there for sure.

Isn’t the new EU law going to take care of this soon anyway? Text messaging platforms need to support cross platform solutions if requested by Service A to B

That's the theory.

But while we're just talking about Apple and Google here... I'm curious to know how the other platforms will handle this new EU law.

If all messaging platforms must interoperate with every other messaging platform... that means:

Facebook Messenger must interoperate with Telegram
Signal must interoperate with WhatsApp
Instagram DMs must interoperate with Twitter DMs
WeChat must interoperate with Snapchat
Slack must interoperate with Microsoft Teams
etc...

And they all have to interoperate with each other, too.

"EU lawmakers have agreed that the major messaging apps available in Europe will have to “open up and interoperate with smaller messaging platforms.” In other words, Europe wants an iMessage or WhatsApp user to be able to send messages to a Signal user, or any other combination of apps you can think of."

I don't even know how that's gonna be possible.

BTW... we haven't even mentioned any encryption/security issues yet.

It's gonna be something to watch.

This just shows your ignorance of the topic you are discussing

Android users can use any messaging app to communicate like the rest of the world

Majority of carriers don’t support rcs in fact most in the us don’t support rcs, they only supports google rcs which is not the same you basically just forwarding all your stuff through google

Don't make friends with the weirdos with the green bubbles - problem solved...
I have lots of friends with green bubbles. Their green bubbles aren’t my concern. If they wanted something different then that’s their choice. If they want blue bubbles they can buy an iPhone. Apple doesn’t need to make iPhone work better with whatever system they want to have
