Google today announced that it has updated its Google Voice App Store application to support the iPad and iPod touch. The application, which Google and Apple famously faced off over last year before Apple finally approved the app last month, offers an interface for interacting with Google's telephone service.
Starting today, you can download a new version of Google Voice that lets you use all the features of the app on these devices, such as sending and receiving free text messages - except, of course, make cellular calls.
While iPad and iPod touch users can't use the Google Voice app to make cellular phone calls through the service, Google has developed a system known as Click2Call that allows users to initiate calls through other devices.
While you can't use your iPod or iPad as a phone, you can use it to initiate Google Voice calls with your phones. We call this feature Click2Call. Simply click any 'Call' button in the Google Voice app on your iPod or iPad and then select which of your phones you want to ring. Google Voice will call your phone and then connect your call.
The update brings several other improvements, including the ability to set "do not disturb" times during which all calls are sent directly to voicemail and improvements for initiating calls from the address book.

Still waiting for them to just go all the way and do VoIP with Google Voice. That should turn the industry on it's ear. :D

Call straight from your iPad or iPod touch (if you're on WiFi) and talk. They're SO close to being able to do this. They give you a phone-number already with Google Voice. People can call it and you can access it all from your iPad or computer or whatever. The only missing piece is the ability to call out using that number with no actual phone at all.

So close. I'm sure they're working on it now as the infrastructure would probably have to be huge because everyone would want to try it. It may also turn into a giant headache for them.

It can actually be done via TalkaTone app. Just download it and it hooks into your google voice and everything you mentioned can be done.

The technology and infrastructure is already in place. However, as this would bankrupt every cell-phone network in the world, I can't imagine anyone giving this the nod just yet. it would also kill the iPhone as everyone would grab an iPod touch.

Wirelessly posted (iPhone 4: Mozilla/5.0 (iPhone; U; CPU iPhone OS 4_2_1 like Mac OS X; en-us) AppleWebKit/533.17.9 (KHTML, like Gecko) Mobile/8C148)

So what does it mean in the change log where it says text forwarding is automatically disabled when activating push notifications? Can those two preferences be set independently of each other? I actually like receiving both texts to my AT&T number via SMS and to the Google Voice app via push.

Am I missing something

I'm trying to find this in the App store on my Ipad, but I'm not seeing it just yet, maybe it'll update later today. I went to a link provided on their post, and it does take me to a google voice app, but it's not a native iPad app, It only shows up in a iPhone resolution, I hope this isn't their idea of "Supporting" the iPad. We'll see I guess.

Looks cool, I'd like to try it out. The voice dialing built into iOS doesn't work well for me, always calls someone else, frustrating.

The iPod Touch is so gimped without a constant data connection. Seriously, about 75% of my Apps require a constant data connection.

Google Voice does do VoIP, just not in these apps for some reason. Google's app will be more interesting when it actually supports all of their own features.

Awesome, Google. Now, how about doing something about that crap-looking and cumbersome UI? Do I really need to click OK after every single text message I send???

EDIT: I see Google did remove the annoying OK button from SMS messaging. Huzzah! Now, about that ugly UI...

i think technically only Google Chat does VOIP. Google Voice only makes calls over regular phone connections (cell, landline). it's obvious they will become one service in the near future.

What I really want is to be able to use my iPhone to call a Google number that would provide voice control of my desktop Mac, which I could then command to send a signal to my iPad, which would then automatically connect to my iPod Touch, which would then tell my iPhone to connect to any number I want, instantly!

That's correct. It does show the infrastructure is there.

BTW, I love GV. A call comes in and it rings my computer and cell. If I'm at my computer I can answer it there using zero cell minutes. I also find that VOIP sounds better, but that's likely because the amp in my iPhone is a lot less powerful than what is being pushed from my MBP.

Try searching for "GoogleVoice" (no space between the words).

Ahhhh... no it wouldn't... key point... you need WiFi to do this and last time I checked, most people leave the house and take calls where there is no WiFi. No WiFi... no internet... no VOIP.

Although, it would be a great alternative for people.
