Gosh I wish there was a way for the GoogleVoice texting to seamlessly work in a non-jailbroken iPhone. It'd save us all a bunch of money ....

Blame Apple. :(

However, the GV webapp is not too bad. It gets its job done and you receive texts in the form of emails.

Does anyone else have an invite they can spare? I signed up for an invite several months ago but no luck. Being on the road a lot this would really help me out. Thanks!!

You know, I just enabled forward SMS messages to my email. Its forwarding to my gmail account.

I ran a test: I texted my GV number from my blackberry (cringe I know - I'm testing this out before I take the plunge on either iPhone or HTC Incredible). My message popped in Gmail after like 2 seconds (Web Gmail on another PC). I responded thru Gmail and it hit my BB in like 2 seconds.

That's pretty damned good.

Can somebody w/ gmail set up via Exchange on their iPhone verify this works the same way? Can somebody text your GV number, have it show up in your Mail application, respond in the Maill App, and have it successfully sent back? In this way you wouldn't even need the Web App ...

???

I use it for free texting. Sure is much easier to type on a real keyboard. I love the fact I can reply to those texts via email.

I also have a Sipsorcery account linked with GV/Sipgate/Gizmo so along with Fring you can make free calls over wifi/3G. Didn't work too well when I was in Aruba but if you can get on someones wifi it may work when overseas.

I have my iPhone setup with Gmail via Google Sync and it works very well this way. I can reply via the iPhones mail app or via Gmail web interface.
