Clearly a sign of the coming changes probably with iOS 17.

My opinion is that this requirement by Apple was not worth it from the start, competition benefits us customers.
You know that if Google can have their own browser for iOS, they will totally own the browser market! iOS has been the only factor of holding back against Chrome going 80%+. For those of us that remember what Microsoft did when they owned the browser market, this is a scary thing and I don't trust any company to own the whole market.

We despretaly need the EU and US to force Apple to accept other browser engines on iOS and iPadOS. The only reason that the iPad is still crippled and unable to become a desktop replacement is because Safari is the only browser of choice. It's unstable, buggy and web apps are a lot less responsive than Chrome on desktop. Developers simply don't optimize their sites for Safari. Animations in sites like reddit.com and youtube.com are very low fps.

Imagine if we finally get the real Chrome browser on the iPad. We can then get native performance of the Google web apps. The current Drive, Docs, Sheets apps on iPadOS are a disgrace. I have watched a lot of unboxing videos of MacBooks by regular consumers and the vast majority of the time the first thing they do is download Chrome. Google has clearly won the browser war and has the best product but Apple's competitive practices are crippling competition and their own products in the process.

That falls on developers. If a product is dominating maybe there’s a reason. Same could be said about iPhones or literally anything else, don’t victim blame the consumer.
I would like to remind you '90 with domination of the IE... at the beginning it was indeed somewhat better than the rest, but then thanks to embedding in windows it got market dominance and everyone basically i my tested in IE which ten t became to stagnante... it was BAD.

unfortunately US, capitalist mentality if "free market" diest/doesn't always work...

And subsequently ending up with this in Europe 😂

Chrome is slowly, but constantly losing market share to Microsoft's Edge, and to lesser extent Brave. It's not the only chromium browser.

And Firefox would benefit a lot from this change, because no one uses it except for it's exclusive privacy and add-ons features, which are all gimped on iOS (unlike you typical chrome normie, who only cares about history/bookmarks/password sync).

Everyone here is all "Yeah! It's about time! We need other options besides Safari/Webkit."

Does anyone actually care? Never once have I thought to myself: "Gee, I wish I could use a Chromium browser on here." Safari works just fine for everything I've ever needed it to and I suspect that's true for 99.9% of others as well.
Exactly what I was thinking. What exactly is the problem with Safari on iOS that might magically be fixed by using something else?

Ironically your wish for more competition will likely result in a lot less. Chromium based browsers will utterly dominate. And having one company able to dictate web standards is not a good idea.
But that's the whole point behind this idea which I welcome. Currently Apple dominates with its browser using its webkit. Even if we have a choice of webkit builds, my default browser on my Macs is still Safari. The issue becomes when Apple no longer supports the hardware and hence Safari and on web browsers that use Apple's webkit start breaking.

I never use Chrome or any Google product unless I absolutely have to*. I use Safari on my Macs as well as my iPhone/iPad. When I have to use a browser other than Safari on a Mac because something did not work (happens from time to time), Chrome is my absolute last choice. It is not even installed on my personal Mac but I have it on my work Mac.

* YouTube is the exception, which I use signed out and often from a private safari window.
