No, what Google really plans on doing is buying up bankrupt audio-equipment makers just for their compact-disc Standards-Essential patent portfolio. Then they'll start suing everyone from Harmon-Kardon to Interscope Records demanding 2.25% of every dollar they make.

All the while pretending not to be evil.

Walled garden: Maps, search, news, music. And now your entire house.

The is the 2nd biggest issue with the Motorola acquisition.
Google will essentially get 100% market penetration through cable companies as it starts to produce cable boxes for cable providers. Consumers rarely have a choice as to what brand of cable box the can lease.

The biggest issue is Googles ability to acquire marketing data (and distribute ads) through these cable boxes again with next to no consumer choice.

Whilst some of Google's efforts are half baked, it's fair to say that pretty much every computer user is aware of the Google name and therefore the potential market is huge. Bigger than Apple, on the basis that their product is any good...

The TV market is notoriously hard to crack based on the number of content providers and the existing multitude of competing services and delivery methods. I would say that the obvious potential players are Sony, Apple or Amazon. Those companies that have the branding, potential to produce a unified delivery of content and finally the product to consume them on.

I think you missed the MOBILITY part of the google acquisition of motorola.

I will give Google a benefit of the doubt. That said, I sincerely wish Google will launch the product properly this time around, a fully baked product descriptions with solid release date instead of offering vague descriptions followed by beta quality product.

Do your research.

Google are ATTEMPTING to acquire a company called Motorola Mobility. The company that does cable boxes and non-mobile products is called Motorola Solutions.

Motorola was split in two over a year ago, the two companies only share part of a name.

I think you missed the part where Motorola Mobility includes its cable operations.

Here is a link from Googles own press release.

So yes, we will all soon be forced into having a Google cable box to pillage more private data.

Incorrect. YOU need to do your research.

I'm guessing this is their second attempt at fighting off Apple's yet-to-be-seen TV push given that Google TV is an utter failure.

You don't understand. They will get next to 100% market penetration with set top boxes. If Google does this, it will be HUGE and a MASSIVE blow to Apple.

Actually you seem to not know about Motorola Mobility, as was discussed frequently when the purchase originally came up all the Cable stuff is owned by Motorola Mobility, heres a quote for Wiki,

"The handset division, (along with cable set-top boxes and cable modems) has since then been spun off into the independent Motorola Mobility."

Or feel free to see how many things MMI makes on their website.

Those are just the 'frontline' ones.

Reading through this thread its funny to see how many brainwashed people we have here. It seems that once Apple has a 'fall-out' with a company, everyone suddenly declares that said company is crap, has never done anything good, and should effectively die.

I love Apple as much as the next guy but this is bordering on insane now. Google do what they do well. If Google has decided to attempt to enter a new market, then big whop. When Apple announced the iPhone did you start moaning that they should stick to Macs?
A couple of those were bought by Google, specifically Youtube, and they've done a good job of crippling its design. In fact, Google seems to be stuck in the 80s; their design sense is pitiful for such a successful company. So you can't really give them credit for products they didn't create.

Google enters new markets on an arbitrary basis. I think this is obvious on their execution and how many flops they've had (Google Talk, Google X, Froogle, Google Catalogs, Google Video, Google Labs, Page Creator, Google Notebook, Jaiku, Dodgeball, Print Ads, Audio Ads, Wave, SearchWiki, Google Coupons, Voice Search, Google Answers, Google TV, and probably Google+, to name a few). People don't moan when Apple enters a new market because they make calculated and measured steps. It's not some whimsical process for them.

Odd, Cablevision just replaced all my 4 year old Motorola modem, box and DVR with Scientific Atlantic.

  • Android
  • Adsense
  • Adwords
  • Picasa
  • Chrome

  • Search: good (still better than Bing, IME)
  • Maps: mediocre (good interface, but false data in many metro areas)
  • Mail: mediocre (decent web interface, but scales poorly on IMAP clients)
  • YouTube: junk
  • Docs: junk
  • Android: junk
  • Adsense: worse than junk (for a user…obviously great for advertisers)
  • Adwords: worse than junk
  • Picasa: meh
  • Chrome: decent, but not clearly better than the alternatives

The list supports Lone Deranger's point: the only thing on that list that is definitely not derivative and definitely not junk is Search.

Google does have one other good product that's not on the list, which is Google Scholar. But other than Search and Scholar, there's not much to recommend vs any of the competitors.

No, but there's a big difference. Apple had proven previously they could build top class hardware, and marry it with innovative, easy to use software. Google has so far not proven they can build quality hardware, nor do they seem to be able to put consumer-oriented software in there (witness the mess that is Google TV on both points).

Hey, we'll see, maybe it'll be great. But their track record so far indicates it won't be. More power to them if they want to try though.

That is a list of things Google did that had huge success. Doesn't matter what you think, it still had a success.

.

Way more than a couple. Maps was also purchased. So was Android. So was Google Docs (formerly Writely). So was Picasa. So was Adsense (!). Chrome, of course, is derived from WebKit.

Besides Search, the only thing on the list that was clearly organic is Gmail.

You don't understand.
The cable box/DVR that you will be getting from your cable company will be a GoogleTV.

They don't need any consumer to buy their GoogleTV product because they will be provided via lease by the cable company with little to no choice.

Its a quite genius move into the TV markets. Get massive amounts of consumer data with consumers not even realize what is going on and have the ability to distribute ads.

The question isn't whether they're successful (though most are not - the vast majority of Google's revenue still comes from Search combined with AdSense/Adwords). The question is whether "the rest of their portfolio is just derivative junk." Please see the original quote:

Google should stick to Search and Maps. The only areas they excel in. The rest of their portfolio is just derivative junk.

Funny to see the fanboys coming up with reasons not to buy this. But aren't you the ones with a little black box that can't even do 1080p under your TV?
