well you are on MacRumors though :D
and on Android Authority, PC World and many other tech sites.;)

on Slickdeals, I see lots of people posting on iPad deals that are android 'fanboys' begrudgingly admit theyre hooked haha
I do my dead level best to steer clear of fanboys on both sides. They're typically not worth engaging. Good tech is good tech, no matter who makes it imo

edit: not preaching at you, just ranting a l'il bit.

They are probably focusing on laptops because they see an opportunity to challenge Apple and all the problems they've been having with their laptops lately. Also enterprise is huge.

Why would they do that? Google doesn’t have a real OS to use so all they could offer would be a Windows laptop (and compete in a sea of laptops from countless manufacturers) or keep making Chromebooks (which are limited compared to an iPad or Windows/macOS device).

Windows owns corporate/enterprise for desktop and iOS owns it for mobile (phones/tablets). There’s nowhere for Google to go in terms of hardware.

Their Android Apps on Chrome will also fail. If Google can’t get developers to optimize Apps for Android tablets, then how will you get them to develop for an even smaller market (Chromebooks)?

Seriously, so many people on here are taking punches at Google's Pixel Slate without actually knowing about the Pixel Slate.

The Pixel Slate is a Chromium OS tablet. It is not an Android tablet, although Chromium OS can run Android apps. Last I read, it can also run some Linux apps now as well.

Chromium OS is also perhaps the most secure OS in the world, it is definitely more secure than macOS or iOS.

I've never owned a Pixel Slate but I played with one at Best Buy and it is beautiful hardware. Personally, I think the feel and design of it in my hands is nicer than my 2018 iPad Pro.

It's disappointing to see Google pull out because even though I am fully in the Apple ecosystem, competition makes Apple better.

Google is just starting to integrate Android and Chromium OS to better challenge Apple's integration. We are just seeing Android integrated into Windows as well.

Apple software is class leading and I love how they make everything beautiful but competition is good for all of us (consumers).

The result of phablets?
The result of Chromebooks. Tablets were supposed to replace netbooks, instead Google just made netbooks that competed with tablets. And for all we say about how the iPad has dominated tablets, Chromebooks certainly dominate the low-priced notebook.

I bought a used Nexus 7 a few years back and wasn't impressed at all, even by the standards at the time (I had access to a first gen iPad mini too).

I can only speak for myself but the company I work for was acquired by an all Google-using conglomerate (Chromebooks/GSuite etc.), and honestly it’s not all that bad. Google are definitely making strides in the Enterprise sector, certainly more than Apple. Not as if Apple are targeting that market, but still.

I still don’t like the lack of desktop apps but I use Outlook sync integration of GSuite which meant it wasn’t much of an inconvenience. Also Google’s Enterprise support is really great.

From a consumer perspective you’ll have to pluck MacOS from my dead hands before I’d give that up, but I was pleasantly surprised with what Google’s ecosystem can offer companies.

Again, just my limited experience. Your mileage may vary. :)

For the life of me, I can't imagine why despite the bargain price, people don't rush out and bet it all on the pixel line.

/s

It just means more will come to Apple.... See what eliminating a product does to ya.. At least if Google kept their head above water, people will always buy..

But by eliminating they chose the easy way out "Lets give up"

In some ways this is kind of sad but I can understand that Google is more focusing on ChromeOS. I just wish they would let ChromeOS be a table only device. ChromeOS seems to be what a good tablet Android tablet should be.
Sadly Android Tablets have always kind of sucked compared to the iPad

Google must have noticed the google search trend for 'google tablet' isn't going so well

The iPad is essentially the only tablet worth using (I’ve tried a few Android ones and was unimpressed). I find that odd. It seems like it should be a more competitive market, but it really isn’t at all. The iPad is practically its own market.

Apple has done well at making the iPad a computer alternative. The Android tablets could never get past the "giant phone" stage (which is how many viewed the iPad when it was first introduced. It's moved far beyond that).

The current line of Samsung Android tablets, including the S4 and S5e, are quite capable computing devices and do multitasking and file-management much better than iOS, and that includes iOS 13. Not to mention their amazing OLED displays. And before I get accused of being biased - I'm typing this on my iPad running iOS 13 beta 2 :)

giggle is the world's leader in abandonware. No other tech company throws as much crap to the wall and none of it sticks. The Pixel phones are next - you'll see.

This is why I can't trust Google with really anything other than things that are "free". I find Google Stadia really interesting, but there is no way I will purchase games for 30-60 USD per title on a service offered by Google with their track record when it comes to just abandon various projects. I can't shake the feeling my dollars spent on games on the platform will just disappear in a 5-10 years because Google figured it was not the success they wanted so they just axed the entire thing and all my money goes to waste..

There are some past examples of technology that was "quite capable" but lost out due to no traction, consumer preference, consumer indifference, which resulted in "quite capable" becoming meaningless.
Why meaningless?
Those products are no longer for sale.

While not surprising, it is disappointing, simply because it means less competition for the iPad. Apple has done a really fantastic job as of late making the iPad a great platform, but competition is always good.

With that being said, on some level this is Google's own fault as Android has never scaled well for a tablet screen, especially as most apps are nothing more than stretched out phone apps.

"Well, well, well," a Google exec said, "iPadOS, that's interesting. We're not doing anything LIKE that. Maybe this tablet thing should be over for us."

I can’t remember the last time I saw a non-iPad tablet (specifically an Android tablet) in the wild. 2013 maybe? Seriously, iPad seems to have absolutely dominated the tablet market.

I do see a bit of Surfaces out there, but really they’re laptops with tablet functionality.

This makes no sense to me given Google's emphasis on improving the tablet experience in Chrome OS. So they're probably just going to focus on clamshell chromebooks and 2-in-1s.

Looks like it's back to the iPad Pro when the time comes to move on from the Pixelbook.

They don't have a clue what they're doing and Google as a company has no stamina. It's in their DNA. Engineers get bored. Engineers do what they do and when a project is 'done' in their mind they move on. The company encourages that by basically only promoting people who have done something new. Not people who maintained and improved a product for say ten years.

That's why so many Google web and software products get shattered and now with hardware as well.

Anyone remember the Motorola disaster?
I wonder how long the (not selling) Pixel phones will be around. My guess is they'll definitely have a Pixel 5 and maybe still a 6 and then call it a day and another billion dollars write-off.

Google giving up really easily doesn’t bode well for their Stadia
They're not a gaming company. Nor good at marketing. It won't be around for long.
