I work in IT and don't know anyone that has one. Well, i am lying i know people that have the first gen tablet and their kids use it. Just a big phone without native calling features. Not really needed at all IMO. (iPad is the same to me)
Clearly you haven't used an iPad in recent years, specifically the Pro. Nor have you seen iPad OS 13 coming this fall. It is as close to a laptop as you can get and blows away any android tablet. Most companies would kill just to have Apples' iPad business. They sell a lot. And they are MUCH more than just a blown up smart phone. 5 years ago you would have been correct. No longer.

The irony of this comment is that was the exact complaint people leveled at the iPad when it came out - it’s just a big iPhone.

Didn’t take long for developers to start cranking out tablet optimized iPad Apps to take advantage of the large screen. Something that never happened on the Android side so they were permanently stuck in the “blown up phone Apps” world.
Because in the end Android is terrible except for when you get a new phone. There is really bad overall software support and updates unless you have a Google or Samsung phone. Every other android phone is garbage within a couple years and never gets updated. When a developer releases a new iPhone or iPad app. It automatically works and is compatible on hundreds of millions of devices RIGHT AWAY. Something that is purely impossible with Android due to fragmentation of devices/support.

The next headline should be Google no longer making any hardware. They suck at it.

I’m long GOOGL but even I think it’s a waste of time.
They suck at software too. Except for their own devices.

They are probably focusing on laptops because they see an opportunity to challenge Apple and all the problems they've been having with their laptops lately. Also enterprise is huge.

That’s funny!

The result will be the same.

Why would they do that? Google doesn’t have a real OS to use so all they could offer would be a Windows laptop (and compete in a sea of laptops from countless manufacturers) or keep making Chromebooks (which are limited compared to an iPad or Windows/macOS device).

Windows owns corporate/enterprise for desktop and iOS owns it for mobile (phones/tablets). There’s nowhere for Google to go in terms of hardware.

Their Android Apps on Chrome will also fail. If Google can’t get developers to optimize Apps for Android tablets, then how will you get them to develop for an even smaller market (Chromebooks)?
They probably want to try to push this at some point: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Google_Fuchsia

To be clear, I'm not saying they will be successful in any of this. But I think they are starting to realize the money is in hardware and they need to be more focused.

Bit of a shame as they sold the legendary Nexus 7. But it’s last Pixel attempt is said to be a disaster so it’s probably for the best. Mind you the first Nexus 7 was a joint project already being worked on by ASUS and Nvidia and google essentially just bought it I believe.

Still it seems you have Amazon or Apple or Microsoft these days and that’s it. Samsung make a token effort it seems and the rest don’t seem to bother anymore..

The result of phablets?
What was legendary about the Nexus 7?

ok..... but its good to have competition.

The Pixel Slate was never in competition with the iPad. And the people who claim they want competition are the same ones who would be jumping with joy if Apple were to disappear.

The iPad is essentially the only tablet worth using (I’ve tried a few Android ones and was unimpressed). I find that odd. It seems like it should be a more competitive market, but it really isn’t at all. The iPad is practically its own market.

Apple has done well at making the iPad a computer alternative. The Android tablets could never get past the "giant phone" stage (which is how many viewed the iPad when it was first introduced. It's moved far beyond that).
Where do you get your numbers? According to Statista, Apple's tablet market share is around 25-30% which is decent but Android still dominates this market. Google never was a player in this market.

Recent troubles aside, there must be a reason why Huawei replaced Apple as the second largest smartphone vendor. This fact alone totally disqualifies your statement.

It’s easy to understand why Google dropped their tablet business: because Android tablets SUCK.
It’s also because their brand new Slate was heavily criticised for performing like a 2006 netbook in the models that were within a tablet’s price range and too expensive for the models that had serviceable hardware.

giggle is the world's leader in abandonware. No other tech company throws as much crap to the wall and none of it sticks. The Pixel phones are next - you'll see.
“giggle” meant as a joke will always be hilarious to me since I know there’s an internet company called Giggle Fiber.

What was legendary about the Nexus 7?
No idea, although the 2nd one probably fixed my experience with it. Have a 1st gen one and it has flash memory problems making it extremely slow (such as really hard to web browse, even just making a new tab in Chrome) unless you factory reset it and don’t install any updates, including security updates. This is a problem that plagues every single 1st gen Nexus 7. I complained about the slowness after a month of owning it. (Plus mine has a bezel problem that pushes on the screen). I really should have taken it back to the store when I had the chance.

Anyways, I always thought about owning a newer google tablet(Samsung too) as they looked pretty good, but the iPad always had the upper hand in app support and other areas. Now with iOS(Or iPadOS) 13 fixes many gripes I had with iOS such as flash drive file transfer and actual game controller support, it’s even further ahead.

That right there is what sets the iPad apart. It is unique in the market.

And Apple is putting their weight behind it, even more so than the Mac I think.

Apple is betting on iDevices being the future.

They got their hands on the latest iPad Pro and realized there was no way they could compete ;)
For the most part Google tablets are far ahead of Apple when it comes to productivity work. This probably is more a repercussion of Surface devices getting a foothold in the enterprise environment. They will probably focus more on 2 in 1's for productivity and enterprise. Apple will eventually have this same problem if they continue down the road of they have shown when it comes to iPad hardware and iPadOS. The real win is enterprise customers. They are much more profitable in the long run and much more easy to see patterns and trends than the consumer customers. If you have a healthy viable enterprise solution you don't have to worry as much when your consumer solutions fall a little. If you have a much more healthy consumer solution which allows some penetration of the enterprise solution because big execs and CEO's are more wanting their favored devices, the second you start loosing the consumer solution, the enterprise solution will start to fall down as well, and it takes a LOT longer to build back up. One thing Microsoft has going for them is their enterprise companies aren't really afraid of where MS will go as a company because they know MS thrives on Windows Volume License and enterprise servicability along with Office 365. And when you see them coming up with stuff like the Surface Hub, Surface Studio, Hololens, directly envisioned more towards enterprises then they feel safe. Apple has a track rcord of lately seeiming to focus heavily on the consumer customers, Emoji's, problems conveying plans for enterprise/ pro users plans such as Final Cut Pro, Logic, Mac Pro, MacBook Pro iMac Pro, MacOS Server and has shown no problem just dropping pro customers, like quitting Aperture, making Photos App a neutered iPhotos App, iMovie, being neutered as well.

The Android market for tablets is basically those $39 devices I can get at 7-11. The ones people buy for their kids or to try out, because, why not? They’re super cheap so little risk if you don’t like it.

Recent troubles aside, there must be a reason why Huawei replaced Apple as the second largest smartphone vendor. This fact alone totally disqualifies your statement.
Because, like Samsung, they sell a lot of cheap devices. Which is why their ASP is so low, like Samsung.

These comparisons are stupid because they lump in devices from all categories and price points, as if a $50 Android device sale should be compared to an iPhone sale.

This is the reality of Android devices. A gazillion dirt cheap throwaway devices with a few flagship devices.

I disagree with your take on Android.

My Note8 has been a stellar device, and my wife is still on a Note5 and it is more user friendly than her iPad in a few ways.

Still, Apple has done a fantastic job with iOS in regards to ecosystem and app curation, not to mention hardware. Those A chips are outstanding.

I can do about 80% of what I need for my job on an iPad. After iPadOS it will probably be close to 100%.

Not sure if this would be a good news for iPad buyers in the future. We need competition to calm iPad price increase..

Yes Android vendors sell cheap models along the flagship models which in many cases (at least for smartphones) cost more than Apple devices. What's your point? What's the point of buying a $1K+ tablet for media consumption? And that's exactly what most tablets are used for. Apple ill advised attempts to position iPad as a PC replacement have mostly failed so far. The fact that so many Apple fans still buy iPad Pros for media consumption is a reflection on the type of the consumers Apple has cultivated. Good for Apple, not so much for many customers (some do have valid use cases for iPad Pros).

The fact remains though, Android dominates these markets. People claiming otherwise are just clueless.

And I can do 99% of what you can do on an IPad on laptop and do it much faster. iPad is good on a sofa as a second entertainment screen. It complements the laptop, it does not replace it.

Whoever uses iPad for a job that can be performed at a desk should be fired immediately (well, there are some corner cases like drawing where iPad may have an advantage but that's extremely rare).

Awesome. They're CLOSE to a laptop. A sandboxed, controlled, limited laptop, by the way. One that can only run software from ONE source. I rather use a REAL laptop instead -- and even save money.

Just because Google decided not to build own tablet hardware anymore doesn't mean that the platform is going away -- Android and Chrome OS are still there. They just leave it to others to build hardware for it. You know, just like Microsoft has always done it. And it could be a smart move for Google to NOT compete with their own OEMs...

Funny how so many people say android tablets were just big phones.. really that's all iPads have been until maybe the last year and definitely no longer with the new iPad OS.. Apple I think is finally figuring it out.. but by no means did Apple do much in the Tablet space other then bring over a glorified screen and big phone OS... That said I give props to Apple for figuring it out, I really want a new iPad Pro with the new OS!
