My iPad Pro 11' is amazing, really amazing on iOS 12 and it will only get better with iOS 13, when you are super focused on few products, you make them really great.

Same here, my 11-inch iPad Pro is the best computer I've ever owned. It can do so much more than just a laptop, yet also does pretty much everything a laptop can do for me. iPadOS is just going to take it to another level, I can't wait for the public beta.

As I've become accustomed to iOS as my daily OS, macOS (which I still like) has begun to feel primitive and old to me. I still have an old iMac but it will probably be the last Mac I ever buy. My iPad is doing everything I need a computer to do, and it's only going to get better from here.

Yeah. That's the reason why people living in second and third world countries are buying Android, not Apple... Android empowers all people to use the Internet. iOS and iPadOS run on fashion gadgets used by people with first world "problems".

Google couldn't care less if their OEMs conquer the high-end market or not. They're an Internet company, and they make their money with their services, not hardware, not operating systems. And guess what? They make a crap load of money through iOS/iPadOS users as well -- about every time you search for something on the web or watch a clip on YouTube.

Um...no. I use DuckDuckGo, not Google. And I use ad blockers and tracker blockers in my browser, nor do I use the YouTube app. If I must watch a video, it's done in my browser with an ad blocker.

Google's services are little more than data mining, I don't use them. Google is an evil, rotten company and I hope the go out of business at some point. At the very least the government needs to heavily regulate Google as well as Facebook. Both companies have proven they cannot be trusted. EVER.

Personal information protection is a great marketing angle and scares people into buying their products.
Facebook has just as much private information on a person who has never logged in to Facebook as those who do. This is what people don’t understand.

I call BS unless you want to provide a source to back your claim about Facebook having “just as much” information about me.

Apples privacy stance is more than marketing. It’s just that their stance on privacy really angers those who support companies who make their money off data mining (like Google). So people try to downplay it like it doesn’t matter.

The iPad is essentially the only tablet worth using (I’ve tried a few Android ones and was unimpressed). I find that odd. It seems like it should be a more competitive market, but it really isn’t at all. The iPad is practically its own market.

Apple has done well at making the iPad a computer alternative. The Android tablets could never get past the "giant phone" stage (which is how many viewed the iPad when it was first introduced. It's moved far beyond that).

This.

I recently replaced my Samsung 8" tablet with a cheap but nice Lenovo Chromebook ($89 refurb) - tons, tons better, a real keyboard, 8 hours on a charge, nice screen.

That Android Tablet rarely got me 5 hours since it seems to be running Cellphone and many other processes in the background, even though it's just tablet and even though I put it on "airplane mode".

Not to mention a bunch of my apps were Fisher-Price with large text and only worked in portrait mode (I prefer landscape).

Piece of junk...

Upgraded from an iPad 2 to 5th Gen a couple of years ago - iPads are the way to go as far tablets.

Shadow profiles are a thing. There’s a lot of information about you even if you are not on Facebook, such as you appearing in a photo that your friend uploads to Facebook that can be scanned and relationships inferred. Facebook tracks and records them all because, why not?

If you are surprised then you've not been paying attention. Those things were total and complete GARBAGE anyway.

The current line of Samsung Android tablets, including the S4 and S5e, are quite capable computing devices and do multitasking and file-management much better than iOS, and that includes iOS 13. Not to mention their amazing OLED displays. And before I get accused of being biased - I'm typing this on my iPad running iOS 13 beta 2 :)

I own both the iPad Pro 10.5" and the Samsung Tab S4, and I prefer using the Samsung.

I dont understand the hate on Android for tablets. It has a full file management system, a full mouse support and a more flexible split screen functionality than iOS (including iPadOS).

To top that off, the official Tab S4 keyboard cover is miles better than the iPad's keyboard cover.

The Apps are better in the iPad, but the OS is better in the Samsung. Hardware wise they are both pretty amazing.

"Well, well, well," a Google exec said, "iPadOS, that's interesting. We're not doing anything LIKE that. Maybe this tablet thing should be over for us."

What an ignorant comment.

IpadOS is being praised mainly because of its updated multitasking, file management and mouse support. Well, guess what: Android has been doing that for.years, and it is better at those 3 specific points.

What do you mean by "we are not doing anything like that"? That is precisely where Android is superior to iOS!

Sorry I disagree

The tab S4 keyboard is terrible. No space at all and you have to push down so hard to get any writing and speed wise you can’t do it quickly without errors.

Tab S4 is very laggy and not on the same level as the iPad in performance and smoothness. I gave the tab to my partner as it wasn’t useable on a daily basics. For video though and films it’s good for stuff like showbox but that’s it

I suppose you could get a third party keyboard for it. Yeah it would be good for watching videos but the aspect ratio is wrong for doing anything else. It’s a shame because the S2 and S3 went to 4:3 but the S4 went back to 16:9. They skimped on the ram and used an older processor. How was Dex on there? I always wondered how that worked.

The main problem I’ve always had with android tablets is that they were unwieldy because of the aspect ratio. They were really good for watching videos and reading comics but awkward for everything else. I don’t really use that many specialist apps to have much to complain about else where. Whilst I do use my iPad mostly for consuming media I do occasionally like to use it for other things like web browsing, playing the odd game, emails etc. I’ve never found these things to be pleasant on android tablets. I do think Dex is a great feature and I’m curious as to how the experience is on a tablet. For consuming media I think the tab S4 is probably the best tablet out there though. I’ve got a kindle fire HD 8 which I use for showbox and in show mode. I was thinking of getting a bigger android tablet for showbox as well but not sure if it’s worth splashing out on the tab S4. I already have the iPad Pro 10.5 and the iPad mini 5. I might just wait until prime day and get a fire HD 10.

The ipad was popular long before it had any of these features because the majority of users don't use or need them.

As such, the issue is that android tablets are ahead in features that simply don't matter to the people actually making the purchasing decisions. You can go on and on about how android lets you do this or that and how the ipad is supposedly crippled for not being able to do the same thing. Most people are not connecting bluetooth mice to their tablets anyways.

Meanwhile, the ipad benefits from the full weight of the apple ecosystem. Each iPad on average is going to get 4-5 years' worth of software updates. The UI is smoother and more intuitive. And a better OS is meaningless without the apps, because that's what people buy a tablet for.

In short, the iPad won not by being the better PC replacement, but by being the better PC alternative.

I think you’ve nailed it. The iPad is just more user friendly and pleasant to use.

What if Google would focus on what they do best, such as search engine? When you think about all the energy spent for products that are then discontinued soon after, they would be better off giving off dividends to their shareholders.
If Apple did that they would still be releasing power pcs, nothing else.

What year is this, 2007? Google has the worlds most popular mobile operating system, and while I'm an iPhone only kind of guy I can acknowledge what they did with android is great.

Googles chrome book is also a hit; a decade later still sells well. Remember when Apple had a failed educational deal? Google chrome book saved the day.

Like Apple, and Microsoft, and Amazon, they are branching into other ventures.

And the internet because of you go anywhere on the internet or use any services then your privacy is already compromised. I'm not defending those two but its naive to think you're privacy is completly safe if you just avoid facebook and google.

Agreed but cutting off Google and Facebook is a great start.

Well Android is not the most popular phone OS in the world - the collection of modified and forked versions of Android is the most used phone OS - which is the problem - that fragmentation of the platform which impacts the development of apps that have features available across the board.

One day laptops will be no more after transferring over tablets with detachable keyboards and mouse support and more open they will always be laptops and desktops as they are trucks and vans even those nose people just need a car and this will be the case for tablets when most users just need a tablet and have no need for a laptop or desktop and google is gotto regret this in the future

Why would I use photoshop on a tablet? I have a desktop and a laptop for that.

And this right here folks explains why Android is complete garbage on tablets.

With an attitude like this I can see why Android developers would be lazy and not bother to try and bring new and powerful software to tablets.

Imagine if Intel, AMD, Nvidia and others thought "why do I need such a fast CPU/GPU - my existing computer already works well enough?"

Some people like to move the needle forward and push the envelope of what can be done. Others are satisfied with the status quo. I'm happy that even though the iPad had no real competition that Apple still keeps moving it forward. Or despite having the most powerful SoCs in the world Apple still spends the time/money to make an 'X' version for the iPad that obliterates every other SoC on the planet.

iPhone iOS and iPad iOS/iPadOS fragmentation is even worse. For example, iPhone iOS in 2019 still doesn't have split screen multitasking that was introduced to iPad iOS. Compare to Android that has had it along with other iPadOS 13 features since like 2012 and is consistent across both phone and tablet. Now it makes sense why Apple has been reluctant to do it for so long since they can't get it right without making it look like lipstick on a pig.

This has nothing to do with Android and everything to do with the fact that I prefer to work with 27+ inch screens (one or two), real keyboard, powerfull CPU and GPU. iPad Pro is just an inferior compromized computer that's it. It's fine for some tasks but not for real work. First IBM PC had 12" monitor. I do not see a reason (other than in sofa/mobile use cases) to use a 12" screens for desktop setup in 2019.

Someone doesn’t understand what fragmentation means. Hint: it has to do with different OS versions or APIs that make it difficult for developers to target a wide range of devices with a common code base.

Unlike with iOS, on Android, API versions have very little to do with OS versions.

Pedantic. Android is still a fragmented mess regardless of the differences between Android and iOS. Such a mess that Google is now on it’s umpteenth “initiative” to deal with this “non-existent” problem.

Unlike Android (where Pie is on a measly 10% of devices almost a year after release), the vast majority of iOS users get the latest version at the same time. It took a few days for iOS 12 to hit 10% and less than 2 months to pass 60%. It hit 85% earlier this month.

Wrong -- Android fragmentation has nothing to do with features - although it is a part of it - most of those features you mention are NOT stock android but third party add ons. Because of all the customization and reskinnning by the multitude of phone OEMs that use Android - its very hard to get a consistent app experience across all versions. Second since updates are passed to phones unevenly and at different times - the most consistent app experience actually has to be reduced to the lowest common denominator of capabilities provided in older versions.

None of those scenarios exist in the iOS ecosystem - as updates are almost universally applied and the functionality you disucss are available in the single stock version of iOS.

Why would I use photoshop on a tablet?

Because it’s portable in ways a laptop is not. The tablet form factor is the best for stylus work which is essential for a lot of Photoshop workflows. Imagine using a traditional laptop while sitting somewhere outside - your only option is the trackpad. If your laptop has a touchscreen and supports a stylus, things are different, but then you’re using it as a tablet, not a laptop - which just proves that tablet form factor is the most practical mobile form factor for graphical work. And in that space, iPad is amazing. A lot of Photoshop users are waiting on a tablet to do their work and soon that will be a reality.

Also, iPad is simply faster, smoother and more focused than most laptops, I can imagine the Photoshop experience, if done right, will be really great on an iPad. Not to mention the amazing Pencil. If I want the best stylus experience, I either have to drag a Cintiq alongside a laptop, get a very expensive (and slightly clunky) Wacom Mobile Studio or get an iPad Pro. Suddenly, even the most expensive iPad Pro doesn’t seem so expensive, compared to the other “pro-level stylus” alternatives.

Google is starting to get it. Apple should cancel the iPad too.

Tablets will never replace computers. They're not powerful enough, their screens are too small, and once the screen gets big enough, the old "gorilla arm" problem comes back if you don't add a mouse.

They fill a niche that just doesn't really exist. If you need to quickly check your email, your iPhone works fine. If you need to do actual work, you need a real computer.

People forget the Photoshop demo last year.

They opened a 3GB 12,000x12,000 pixel 157 layer PSD file on the iPad Pro and manipulated it in real time without lag.

Meanwhile, people demo Photoshop on Qualcomm powered Windows ARM devices loading up a .jpg and applying a single basic effect and acting like it’s some kind of accomplishment.

As they mentioned at Adobe Max (several times to drive the point home) this isn’t “Photoshop Lite” or some scaled back version. It’s full-blown Photoshop. On an iPad.
