this thread made me laugh. no offense but when i saw the list of "apps" i couldnt help it.

just get an ipod touch!

Why laugh? I want to have the best experience possible and am horrible with patience when it comes to computers. Surely, I could get by on a macbook...but that doesn't mean I wouldn't have a better experience with a MBP 2.6 or 2.93. If a 2.93 would make a noticeable difference when running a VM...for $270 it would be with it to me and thats what I wanted to know.

Thats the only problem with forums, people like you get on them and add comments which have nothing to do with the initial question and therefore waste everyone's time. When we post we don't want your BS opinion, we just want your input (relating to the question), if you have nothing find something else to do.

Anyway, I realize I'm going against what I say but I've been studying for Finals all day and you struck a cord.

You also didn't answer the question I had.

So, I just dropped into the local apple store to get something and they ended up having a 17" MBP in stock.

I decided that I'd take it as I didn't want to wait a few weeks by ordering one.

The specs are as follows:
2.66
4gb
5400 hdd
Glossy

Here is my question:
I wanted a 2.93 processor but went with the 2.66 as i thought it would be more than enough, what are your thoughts given the following apps that I use.

ical
iwork
safari
Microsoft Vista via VM Fusion - will a 2.66 suffice for this?

I plan on getting the G Skill Titan SSD

Let me know...thanks

I bought the 2.93, but I have a sick obsession with speed.

Real world. I have been trying out my niece's MacBook that I bought her for Christmas. I bought her the faster 2.4GHz processor and it is pretty snappy. I seriously considered getting that model, except I wanted the larger display for video editing. For what you are doing, I think you are fine with any of the mac's currently produced, or even the last generation.

If later on you want to make it a bit faster, installing a SSD when the prices drop will breath new life into it. But you won't need it. It will be snappy just as it is.

Now if you have a sick obsession with speed....

Not entirely a valid reason. I run VMWare Fusion just the same on my MacBook as I do on my MacBook Pro. Same settings, same resolution. If fact, the Vista on my MacBook runs faster then the one in my MacBook Pro for some reason.

Is it because the return key is farther away?

Belfast got their first 17" MacBook Pro this morning (along with one for display), 2.66GHz model. I lucked out in phoning when I did and getting the good news!

I also broke down. Cancelled my order with Apple online and picked up a shiny new 17" from the Apple Store in Pentagon Mall (Arlington, VA). They didn't have them on display yet but had them in the back.

Before I even fired it up I installed the 500GB Seagate drive and was up and running a few hours later after my huge time machine restore :D

i apologize, but you have to understand how that sounded. You just purchase an AMAZING machine. what you do with it doesnt matter. I was just making a comment on the list of 'low-power-needing' apps. Many buy power for the future and for just plain speed, both of which are fine. Please dont take it personal. To answer your question. Your computer will run great. Its gonna last you for 4+ years with care. Congrats on your new machine. I am jealous.

congrats to the OP for purchasing the latest and greatest from Apple. As long as you're happy with the machine, it doesn't really matter what you do with it. How many people buy a laptop just to browse the internet and nothing else? If we only buy machine thats has JUST the right amount of powe for our true needs, there would be no innovation. I bet most users out there have machines thats considered "overkill" for what they do, but so what? If the OP sees the value, then thats all it matters.
