I actually have the same experience as the OP. My mid 2010 machine had 3 main repairs, plus another because one of the repairs 'completed' by a 'certified retailer' made things even worse. I took it in just before the three years Applecare expired and they gave me the early 2013 15" machine, because it was before the recent refresh.
At first I was a little hesitant because I wasn't sure whether I should look into the refreshed models, but after waiting patiently with it still sealed in the box, and watching the Apple conference a couple of weeks back, finding out they were getting rid of the dGPU and that it wasn't the upgrade it was being bigged up to be, I just said screw it, bust it out the box and cracked on with using it. Am happy with it, and the service I recieved the many times I went.
The 'certified retailer' on the other hand... They refused to replace the screen because it had already been replaced once (I overheard the 'higher up' guy talking to the technician I was on the line with, he actually said - 'well it's already been done once it's his own fault' - unbelievable!) They also claimed to have fixed my DVD drive and sent it back as 'repaired' (they didn't even touch it) and instead decided to break the logic board when fixing the machine back together, and of course they kept quiet about it. I guess it worked in my favor however, was another repair to add to the tally.
Thankfully the proper Apple store were absolutely superb. Apart from the wait time and the gurus seeing people who just strolled in rather than seeing people who took the time to book an appointment (I always do) they were brilliant.
