I definitely believe in good deals, and have been extremely fortunate to get some nice ones. As of now, I'm sitting (as in a different thread) on a $800 15" 2.33 macbook pro, or a $850 2.2ghz macbook pro. So I, along with others, don't think the issue is so much the price being unreal, but the terms from the seller sure are strange.

As for "all Ebay purchases are considered 'high risk'," I don't think MOST ebay deals have a 30 day waiting period.

I don't think all ebay deals are risky. I've bought plenty of times from ebay and always from power sellers, no sad stories to report yet, fortunately. This guy has good feedback and recent account activity so the OP should receive his purchase. This discussion started from the fact that the price was too low and it arose suspicion. Like I said in one of my very first posts, I think the OP will most likely receive his brand new MBP.

Fast forward to today. Paypal's new policy that started earlier this year, now has a 21 day probational period on "high risk" transactions. Paypal basically acts as an escrow and doesn't allow the seller to withdraw the money until there is proof of delivery or positive feedback. Payment is held for 21 days so the buyer has time to dispute without being SOL (like I was several years ago) if the seller decides to go AWOL.

Do you know if this is still the case? Their Ebay Buyer Protection makes it sound like you're covered in FULL as long as you make a claim within 45 days of the purchase.

not to bring something back from the dead, but i am still wondering if these people got their macbooks?

Funny because I was just thinking the same thing, you bringing this back from the dead prompted me to look around. I'm guessing the kid never saw the MBP.

still not 30 days yet - which was the estimated waiting time.

I'm not sure I'd hold my breath on this one though.

I just bought NEW aluminum MBP 2.4ghz, Nvidia GPU, 200GB HD for $1650 shipped minus $200 MSN Live Search. Total came to $1450 shipped! :D:D I bought two.

There are three more avaliable.

That's a crazy deal? I got my Alum MacBook w/AppleCare for $800. Three weeks old. Lady was going through a divorce and skipping town, didn't want to return it. She liked her MBP more than the MB so she thought she would "give someone a good deal". I got lucky lol

God bless divorces!

But really, I guess we're a few days shy of 30 days but I bet he never sees the MBP.

I have no interest in MBs, but when live.com cashback was still around, there were many (low end 2.0ghz) unibody MBs that ended in that range (after cashback of course). I purchased a new unibody MB (2.4ghz version) for a relative for $920 shipped after cashback + paypal - and there were numerous listing that ended around that price. I saw quite a few new 2.0ghz unibody MBs end for around $825 shipped (after cashback w/o paypal).

Unibody MBPs on the other hand, I found were extremely difficult to find under $1500 even after live.com cashback.

edit: seems like the price of the unibody MBPs have rapidly fallen in the past couple weeks (probably due to live.com falling out for the past week) - but still difficult to find under $1400

some schools have ridiculously low prices on last gen penryn macbook pros.

1.2k for 2.5 GHz
1.1k for 2.4.

new. My parents got the 2.5 a week ago and they love it.

live cashback isnt around anymore? wtf!!!!

Shouldn't the MBPs have been shipped in order to receive the goods in 30 days, so the OP should have received a confirmation with tracking number?

Received!

So, a month has passed since I ordered one of the laptops from this same eBay seller but a different eBay listing ( http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=380080337946 ).

$1800 for a 2.53ghz unibody MBP (shipped by Priority Mail and after live.com discount)

And, contrary to all the naysayers' predictions, it arrived today!

The seller was great with communication and, due to some fraud of a buyer, made sure we all were available to sign for the package and to confirm our addresses. I would seriously watch out for future listings from this seller, yasharel, as I can't be happier w/ such a tremendous deal. It seems like at the time I bought it the seller was dealing w/ t-shirts and other less expensive goods, but now you'll notice he sells preorders for canon DSLRs and other things that are more expensive.

I've posted photos of the box (which was totally brand new and sealed) and the machine booting up. I am entirely confident the machine has never been used before. Every piece was correctly wrapped in plastic showing no signs of someone trying to replace plastic from a previous use. I'm reinstalling a fresh copy of Leopard right now and the machine has absolutely no faults whatsoever.

If you look at his ratings, http://feedback.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewFeedback2&userid=yasharel&ftab=AllFeedback , you'll see that someone else received their MBP earlier this week and was also equally enthused.

I checked the warranty information on Apple's web site using the serial number and I am covered until November 25, 2009. I ordered and payed on November 11.

So you can say that we were lucky, risky, or w/e - but in the end it all worked out.

Whatever you do say, however, do not say that I am the seller posing as a buyer. You can check my profile - I have been registered on these forums for a long time and have several posts to my name.

...why do you have to reinstall the OS?

Everyone that says they actually receive one of these deals should also post pics...

Hes not reinstalling his OS, thats just the video that comes out when you first turn on a new machine.

He also said so in his post - "I'm reinstalling a fresh copy of Leopard right now"

I don't do that myself but I don't think it's uncommon to install a fresh copy of your OS regardless if it's brand new...

Yeah, I was just reinstalling to have a fresh copy of Leopard w/out all the extra printer drivers & languages. Perhaps there is an easier way of doing it that I'm not aware of so I just reinstall whenever I get a new computer.

The only way someone could afford to do this without losing money is if the computers are stolen. Here in the UK, possession of stolen goods is a criminal offence so I hope you enjoy your time in the clink.

You will not go to jail for buying it, unless your stupid enough to tell the police that you knew they were stolen. Though you will loose the goods. When it comes to stolen goods, the buyer gets ripped, the goods are confistacted and the buyer is left out of pocket. That is why as the buyer you are taking the biggest risk buying something that is stolen, so protection, no insurance...

Congrats.

For me, the issue was that the original owner wrote that he planned to resell them, I guess, for a profit.

But if they are indeed stolen or something like that, why would someone want to go through all that trouble for such a risk?

But hopefully this turns out fine for everyone.
